Cervicovaginal microbiota, women's health, and reproductive outcomes.

The human microbiome project has shown a remarkable diversity of microbial ecology within the human body. The vaginal microbiota is unique in that in many women it is most often dominated by Lactobacillus species. However, in some women it lacks Lactobacillus spp. and is comprised of a wide array of strict and facultative anaerobes, a state that broadly correlates with increased risk for infection, disease, and poor reproductive and obstetric outcomes. Interestingly, the level of protection against infection can also vary by species and strains of Lactobacillus, and some species although domin

Reproductive Health and Bodily Integrity in Tanzania.

Several policy initiatives support the empowerment of women to improve their reproductive health. Little is known, however, about the inverse effect that reproductive health might have on women's empowerment. Women are pressured to conform to their reproductive role, and an inability to do so might affect their empowerment, including control over their own body. Using a panel dataset of 504 married women in Northern Tanzania, we find that women who experienced a pregnancy loss show more tolerant views of partner violence and that child mortality lowers their perceived control over the sexual r

Persistent organochlorine pollutants and human reproductive health.

The present dissertation focuses on the reproductive health effects in humans from four diverse populations, including an Inuit population from Greenland, a Swedish population of fishermen and fishermen's wives, and urban populations from the cities of Warsaw in Poland and Kharkiv in Ukraine, representing populations with considerable variations in organochlorine exposure levels due to differences in the consumption of contaminated food items and the period since banning the use of the organochlorines selected in the present study. Due to bioaccumulation and their long half-lives in humans, th

Infectious disease and reproductive health: a review.

UNLABELLED: Human reproduction provides unique opportunities for the transmission of infectious agents. Furthermore, the mother and her offspring have distinct susceptibilities to infection at each stage of reproduction, from conception and gestation to parturition and the neonatal period. The impact of pathogens on reproduction can be mitigated or exacerbated depending on timing of acquisition during pregnancy. Similarly, factors such as maternal immune response, nutritional status, or concurrent infection may modify the effect of an infectious agent. In this review, we discuss the evidence--

Reproductive health in women with eating disorders.

Medical complications are often the precipitants that lead women with eating disorders to seek health care. Complications can be wide ranging but frequently include symptoms associated with reproductive health. Unfortunately, because of the denial, embarrassment, shame, and secrecy associated with these psychiatric illnesses, the underlying cause of these complications can often go unacknowledged, delaying assessment and intervention. This article provides an overview of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, identifies the reproductive health issues that may occur in women with these disorders

Interface of Women's Mental and Reproductive Health.

The interface of women's reproductive and mental health is an evolving area of psychiatric practice, necessitating familiarity with psychobiological factors unique to women. The role of estrogen in particular has profound implications for the etiology and treatment of women's psychiatric illness, and has been reviewed along with the role of other hormones. Additionally, the stress of specific life events such as miscarriage, abortion, and menopause affects female mental health from a biological and psychosocial standpoint with the potential for secondary mood and anxiety disorders. Factors affecting adolescent reproductive health in Manitoba.

OBJECTIVES: To report teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STI) rates among Manitoba adolescents, and associated factors including rates of sexual intercourse and contraceptive use. METHODS: Teen pregnancy rates in females aged 15 to 19 for the fiscal years 1994/95 through 1998/99 were derived from the Population Health Research Data Repository and reported by geographical areas and income quintiles. Premature mortality rate (PMR) and the Socioeconomic Factor Index (SEFI) measured the overall health and socioeconomic well-being of regional populations. Data on sexual activity a

Women's health and reproductive rights: Romanian experience.

One of the most dramatic chapters in the history of women's reproductive rights ended in Romania in 1989. For over 23 years, Romania had pursued a rigidly enforced pronatalist policy, banning the importation of contraceptives, strictly prohibiting most abortions, and imposing a tax on childless couples. The aim of this study was to explore, through individual in-depth interviews, psychosocial antecedents and consequences of the Romanian policy. The study group consisted of 50 women, aged between 18 and 55 years, with diverse sociodemographic and educational characteristics. The interviews focu

Toward an ecology of women's reproductive health.

Medical ecology has been one of the dominant theoretical strands in medical anthropology since the 1960s. It has come to be identified with a rather narrow range of research issues, concerning such matters as adaptation to climate and infectious disease, and has dealt with small-scale foraging societies. An ecological model has potential for dealing broadly with other health issues, in the case explored here, women's reproductive health, a topic that has frequently been approached from either a cultural or biological standpoint rather than the integrated one advocated here.

Women's reproductive health: recent advances in therapies.

Normal cyclic menstruation involves a delicate concert of hormonal events, characterized by midcycle ovulation and, if no pregnancy is achieved, menstrual flow. Women's health--and especially their reproductive health and fertility--may be affected by abnormalities in cyclicity or in menstruation. A number of valuable modes of therapy have recently become available. Abnormal cyclicity may be caused by decreased estrogen levels (from exercise, smoking, or eating disorders). Small ovulation induction pumps, which deliver minute physiologic concentrations of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH)

The Shifting Policy Landscape in Reproductive Health.

Since the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization and accelerating over the past year, reproductive health policy in the United States has become increasingly fragmented and unstable. Recent federal actions have introduced new barriers across the continuum of reproductive care. These actions include changes to Title X family planning funding, substantial reductions to Medicaid, rescission of federal Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA) guidance related to pregnancy emergencies, and renewed regulatory scrutiny of mifepristone. Together, these

Semen Microbiome, Male Infertility, and Reproductive Health.

The semen microbiome, once believed to be sterile, is now recognized as a dynamic ecosystem containing a diverse range of microorganisms with potential implications for male fertility and reproductive health. We aimed to examine the relationship between the semen microbiome, male infertility, and reproductive outcomes, highlighting the transformative role of next generation sequencing techniques and bioinformatics in exploring this intricate interaction, and we present a critical review of the published literature on this issue. Current evidence suggests a complex association between the compo

Reproductive health in the liver transplant recipient.

Rates of liver transplantation (LT) are rising in young adults, including among reproductive-aged females. While pregnancy outcomes are overall favorable, these pregnancies are at higher risk and warrant careful planning and immunosuppression management. Transplant recipients value receiving reproductive health counseling from their transplant team; thus, provider knowledge surrounding pre-conception through postpartum management is key to optimizing obstetric and graft outcomes. A critical role of transplant providers lies in reproductive counseling to ascertain whether patients are sexually

Current global status of male reproductive health.

BACKGROUND: The widespread interest in male reproductive health (MRH), fueled by emerging evidence, such as the global decline in sperm counts, has intensified concerns about the status of MRH. Consequently, there is a pressing requirement for a strategic, systematic approach to identifying critical questions, collecting pertinent information, and utilizing these data to develop evidence-based strategies. The methods for addressing these questions and the pathways toward their answers will inevitably vary based on the variations in cultural, geopolitical, and health-related contexts. To addres

Reproductive Health in RA, Lupus, and APS.

Systemic lupus erythematosus, antiphospholipid syndrome, and rheumatoid arthritis are chronic autoimmune diseases affecting women of childbearing age. These diseases may impair fertility and fecundity, as well as complicate pregnancy and the puerperium in these patients including disease flare and obstetric complications on both the maternal and fetal side. For each patient, an appropriate preconceptional counseling with risk stratification is required, including assessment of disease activity, organ involvement, serological profile, and comorbidities. In cases of pregnancy, the aims of treatme

Mexican traditional medicines for women's reproductive health.

Like China, Mexico has a traditional system of medicine dating back almost 5000 years that incorporates the healing practices of pre-Columbian civilizations, including the Maya and Aztec. Mexican Traditional Medicine (MTM) women depend on MTM practices and herbal medicines for their primary healthcare needs as limited access and high costs of Western medicine is a significant problem. The aims of this work were to determine the medicinal plants more commonly used in MTM for women's reproductive health issues and assess the clinical data supporting their use. Data from multiple sources was comp

Reproductive health of the sow during puerperium.

The modern hyperprolific sow is susceptible to metabolic disease and chronic inflammation. The most sensitive phase is parturition, when the sow experiences systemic inflammation and stress, and major changes in metabolism and endocrinology. Resolution of inflammation and stress needs to happen quickly to ensure good reproductive health during puerperium. If the sow fails to adapt to these changes, puerperal disease may occur. The economically most important puerperal disease complex is the postpartum dysgalactia syndrome (PPDS). Other puerperal diseases include infections of the urogenital tr

Selective progesterone receptor modulators and reproductive health.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review is intended to provide perspective on the history of selective progesterone receptor modulators (SPRMs) and progesterone antagonists, their current availability, therapeutic promise and safety concerns. RECENT FINDINGS: Despite keen interest in synthesis of these compounds, only a handful have had clinical test results allowing for commercialization. Mifepristone is well tolerated and effective for single dose first trimester at-home pregnancy termination and is available in much of the world. Ulipristal acetate, at single doses, is well tolerated and effective
