Sex Attractant Pheromones of Virgin Queens of Sympatric Slave-Making Ant Species in the Genus Polyergus, and their Possible Roles in Reproductive Isolation.

Species of the ant genus Polyergus are social parasites that steal brood from colonies of their hosts in the closely related genus Formica. Upon emergence as adults in a mixed population, host Formica workers carry out all the normal worker functions within the Polyergus colony, including foraging, feeding, grooming, and rearing brood of the parasitic Polyergus ants. Some unmated Polyergus gynes (queens) run in the raiding columns of their colonies and attract males by releasing a pheromone from their mandibular glands. There are two Polyergus species groups in North America: an eastern P. luc

Genetics of reproductive isolation in the Drosophila simulans clade: DNA marker-assisted mapping and characterization of a hybrid-male sterility gene, Odysseus (Ods).

In this study, we address the question of whether there exist major genes that cause complete male sterility in the interspecific hybrids of Drosophila and, if they do, how these genes may be characterized at the molecular level. Our approach is to introgress small segments of the X chromosome from Drosophila mauritiana (or Drosophila sechellia) into Drosophila simulans by repeated backcrosses for more than 20 generations. The introgressions are monitored by both visible mutations and a series of DNA markers. We compare the extent of introgressions that cause male sterility with those that do

Genotyping and characterization of Chlamydia trachomatis and Ureaplasma parvum isolates of reproductive aged women in South Andaman Islands.

BACKGROUND: Chlamydia trachomatis is a prevalent sexually transmitted infection (STI) that often remains asymptomatic, complicating control efforts. Characterizing its serovars, particularly in isolated regions like the Andaman Islands, is crucial for understanding local epidemiology. METHODS: This study involved PCR assays to identify C. trachomatis and Ureaplasma parvum serovars in high vaginal samples from reproductive-aged women attending a gynaecology clinic in Port Blair, India, from August 2020 to July 2022. DNA sequencing of the OMP1 gene was performed to determine genotypes. RESULTS

Whole-genome sequencing and comparative genomic analysis of Irpex lacteus isolated from the female reproductive tract.

Irpex lacteus is a fungus typically found on angiosperm branches and trunks. Here, we report the isolation of a novel strain of I. lacteus from the cervix uteri of a female patient diagnosed with endometriosis and COVID-19 at Beijing Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital, Capital Medical University. Using whole-genome sequencing, we generated a high-quality draft genome for this human-derived strain. Comparative genomic analysis revealed significant variations amongst I. lacteus strains colonizing distinct environments. Functional annotations indicated that environmental adaptation has influenced

Autosomally dominantly inherited isolated gonadotropin deficiency via maternal assisted reproduction due to SOX10 mutation.

OBJECTIVES: Kallmann syndrome (KS) is a rare genetic disorder marked by hypogonadotropic hypogonadism and either anosmia or hyposmia. It exhibits genetic heterogeneity, with mutations identified in only 30 % of cases, involving various genes such as KAL1, FGFR1, FGF8, CHD7, and SOX10. Here, we present a case of gonadotropin deficiency associated with KS, observed in both a mother and her daughter, the latter conceived through assisted reproductive technology using the mother's ovum. CASE PRESENTATION: A 12-year-old female presented with short stature and lack of growth over the past year. Ini

Pathogenic Characterization of European Genotype Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus Recently Isolated in Mainland China.

BACKGROUND: Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) is an important pathogen in pig that causes tremendous economic loss in the global swine industry. PRRSV is divided into the European and North American genotypes, with virulence ranging from apathogenic-moderately virulent to highly pathogenic. The emergence of new highly virulent type 1 strains and coexistence of the two genotypes complicate the differential diagnosis, disease prevention, and control of PRRSV. Although the emergence of a novel type 1 PRRSV strain in mainland China was first confirmed in 2011, there is no

Isolated polyarteritis nodosa of the male reproductive system associated with a germ cell tumor of the testis: a case report.

Polyarteritis nodosa (PAN) presents mostly as a systemic disease with poor prognosis, rarely in an isolated form with a usually favorable outcome. Both forms may affect the male reproductive system and both forms have been associated with malignancies. We describe for the first time the occurrence of isolated PAN in the reproductive system combined with a mixed germ cell tumor of the testis in a 21-year-old man presenting with symptoms of chronic epididymitis. Two years after surgery he is without evidence of recurrence of either the tumor or PAN.

Comparison of the antigen distribution of two US porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus isolates with that of the Lelystad virus.

One hundred 4-week-old cesarean-derived colostrum-deprived pigs were inoculated with one of two different US porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) isolates (VR2385, VR2431) or the European Lelystad virus to detect and compare the location and amount of virus antigen. Interstitial pneumonia, myocarditis, lymphadenopathy, and encephalitis were consistently seen in all three groups; however, disease and lesions were more severe in the VR2385 group. Immunohistochemical evaluation of formalin-fixed tissues revealed virus antigen in alveolar macrophages in lungs of 22/25, 14/25

Azoospermic men with isolated elevation of folliclestimulating hormone represent a specific subpopulation of patients with poor reproductive outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to describe a distinct subpopulation of azoospermic patients with isolated elevation of follicle-stimulating hormone (iFSH) and poor outcomes of microdissection testicular sperm extraction (microTESE). METHODS: A retrospective analysis of microTESE outcomes was conducted among 565 patients with non-obstructive azoospermia (NOA). Testicular pathology was assessed by the dominant histological pattern and Bergmann-Kliesch score (BKS). Descriptive statistics were presented for the iFSH subgroup. Inhibin B levels, the sperm retrieval rate (SRR), and BKS were compared in

Pathogenic and Genotypic Characterization of a Japanese Encephalitis Virus Isolate Associated with Reproductive Failure in an Indian Pig Herd.

BACKGROUND: India is endemic to Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) and recurrent outbreaks occur mainly in rice growing areas. Pigs are considered to be the amplifying host for JEV and infection in gestating pigs results in reproductive failure. Most studies conducted on JEV infection in Indian pigs have been serological surveys and very little is known about JEV genotypes circulating in pigs. So the potential risk posed by pigs in JEV transmission and the genetic relationship between viruses circulating in pigs, mosquitoes and humans is poorly understood. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: This

Clonal reproduction and limited dispersal in an environmental population of Cryptococcus neoformans var gattii isolates from Australia.

Cryptococcus neoformans var. gattii is a causative agent of cryptococcosis and is thought to have a specific ecological association with a number of Eucalyptus species in Australia. However, the role that the tree plays in the life cycle of the fungus and the nature of the infectious propagule are not well understood. This study set out to examine whether sexual recombination is occurring in a natural population of C. neoformans var. gattii and whether the fungus disseminates between colonized trees. Thirty C. neoformans var. gattii isolates, consisting of both the alpha and a mating types, we

Reproduction of inclusion body hepatitis in conventionally raised chickens inoculated with a New Zealand isolate of avian adenovirus.

Conventionally raised chickens were inoculated with a local isolate of serotype 8 of avian adenovirus by an oral or intraperitoneal route, or were exposed to the infection by contact. Fatal hepatitis, resembling inclusion body hepatitis, occurred in 30% and 45% of the birds inoculated by the oral and intraperitoneal routes respectively, and severe growth depression was recorded in survivors and in birds in contact. Birds which had maternally derived virus neutralising antibody titres of 64 or greater at the time of viral exposure did not succumb to fatal infection, but their growth rates were

The Evolution of Reproductive Isolation Beyond a Strong First Barrier in Speciation Between Micro-Allopatric Host Races of a Phytophagous Ladybird Beetle, Henosepilachna diekei.

Reproductive isolation often accumulates unevenly during speciation, with some barriers evolving early and others appearing only after further divergence. In host-associated phytophagous insects, divergent host use can generate strong habitat isolation that evolves early in speciation and often results in sudden shifts towards strong reproductive isolation. However, whether additional sexual or postmating barriers can accumulate after this strong early ecological barrier has evolved remains unclear. In this study, we examined this question in the host-specialised populations of the Southeast-A

Isolation of Escherichia coli carrying the blaCTX-M-1 and qnrS1 genes from reproductive organs of broiler breeders and internal contents of hatching eggs.

This study aimed to characterize two third-generation cephalosporins- and quinolone-resistant Escherichia coli (TGCs- and Q-R-Ec) isolates recovered from the ovaries of a broiler breeder flock and the internal contents of hatching eggs produced by the broiler breeder flock. Clonal relatedness was determined by multilocus sequence typing (MLST). The isolates displayed the same multidrug resistance profile, with resistance to ampicillin, ticarcillin, piperacillin, cefazollin, cephalothin, cefotaxime, nalidixic acid, tetracycline and sulfonamides. Double disk synergy test demonstrated that the tw

Isolation of Coxiella burnetii from bovines with history of reproductive disorders in India and phylogenetic inference based on the partial sequencing of IS1111 element.

In the present study, a total of 158 blood samples from 148 bovines and 10 dogs having a history of reproductive disorders were screened for Coxiella burnetii by trans-PCR method. In case of bovines, 6.08% (9/148) blood samples comprised of 4.54% (4/88) cattle and 8.33% (5/60) buffaloes turned out to be positive for C. burnetii DNA while all the samples from dogs (10) were found negative. Of the 9 PCR-positive bovine blood samples, the organism could be isolated only from 3 cases of buffaloes by chick embryo inoculation method. Further, to predict the homology and genetic diversity, the recove

Experimental infection of SPF piglets with porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) viruses isolated from two farms.

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) viruses were isolated from pig samples obtained from two farms characterized by an increased number of stillbirth and high mortality in new-born piglets (farm A), and respiratory distress with high mortality in weaning and growing pigs (farm B) in 1993, respectively. When primary specific pathogen-free piglets, 5-day-old or 13-day-old, were experimentally inoculated with the isolates, they showed clinical signs of depress, anorexia, pyrexia, diarrhea, sitting posture and periocular edema. Rate of the weight gain was reduced in the inoculated

Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus Prevalence and Pathogenicity of One NADC34-like Virus Isolate Circulating in China.

Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus (PRRSV) is one of the most significant infectious agents threatening the global pig industry. Due to its high mutation and recombination rates, the prevalence of PRRSV in domestic pig populations is complex. To better understand the epidemiology of PRRSV, we conducted a large-scale investigation in eastern China, focusing on pig farms with a history of high abortion rates. A total of 14,934 pig samples were collected from 11 sow farms and 53 fattening farms across three provinces. Among these, 13.0% of the collected samples tested positive fo

Effects of a new thyrotropic drug isolated from Potentilla alba on the male reproductive system of rats and offspring development.

BACKGROUND: The dysfunction of the thyroid gland is a common medical condition. Nowadays, patients frequently use medicinal herbs as complementary or alternative options to conventional drug treatments. These patients may benefit from treatment of thyroid dysfunctions with Potentilla alba L. preparations. While it has been reported that Potentilla alba preparations have low toxicity, nothing is known about their ability to affect reproductive functions in patients of childbearing age. METHODS: Male Wistar rats were orally treated with a thyrotrophic botanical drug, standardized Potentilla alb
