Resistance Training Affects Neuromuscular Fatigue But Not Efficiency in Elite Rowers.

PURPOSE: To investigate how resistance training (RT) in a regular training program affects neuromuscular fatigue (NMF) and gross efficiency (EGROSS) in elite rowers. METHODS: Twenty-six elite male rowers performed 4 RT sessions within 10 days. At baseline and after the first and fourth RT, EGROSS and NMF were established. From breathing gas, EGROSS was determined during submaximal rowing tests. Using a countermovement jump test, NMF was assessed by jump height, flight time, flight-to-contraction-time ratio, peak power, and time to peak power. Muscle soreness was assessed using a 10-cm-long vi

Tongue-pressure resistance training improves tongue and suprahyoid muscle functions simultaneously.

PURPOSE: Producing tongue pressure (TP) by pushing the tongue against the palate consists of lifting the tongue muscles and elevating the floor of the mouth via suprahyoid muscle contraction. Though studies have shown that tongue-pressure resistance training (TPRT) increases tongue function, none have focused on suprahyoid muscle function enhancements. Our study aimed to verify whether TPRT improves both tongue function and hyoid movement during swallowing. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighteen patients (mean age: 76.8±6.2 years) with presbyphagia presenting with symptoms such as coughing and choki

Testosterone and Resistance Training Improve Muscle Quality in Spinal Cord Injury.

PURPOSE: Spinal cord injury (SCI) negatively impacts muscle quality and testosterone levels. Resistance training (RT) has been shown to increase muscle cross-sectional area (CSA) after SCI, whereas testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) has been shown to improve muscle quality in other populations. The purpose of this pilot study was to examine if the combined effects of these interventions, TRT + RT, may maximize the beneficial effects on muscle quality after SCI. METHODS: Twenty-two SCI subjects randomized into either a TRT + RT (n = 11) or TRT (n = 11) intervention for 16 wk. Muscle qualit

The Impact of Resistance Training on Swimming Performance: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: The majority of propulsive forces in swimming are produced from the upper body, with strong correlations between upper body strength and sprint performance. There are significant gaps in the literature relating to the impact of resistance training on swimming performance, specifically the transfer to swimming performance. OBJECTIVE: The aims of this systematic literature review are to (1) explore the transfer of resistance-training modalities to swimming performance, and (2) examine the effects of resistance training on technical aspects of swimming. METHODS: Four online database

Muscle strength and damage following two modes of variable resistance training.

Nautilus Machine (NM) and Elastic Resistance (ER) have gained considerable popularity among athletes and recreational lifters seeking to increase muscle strength. However, there is controversy concerning the use of ER for increasing muscle hypertrophy and strength among healthy-trained individuals. The aim of the study was to compare the effect of repeated near maximal contractions by ER/NM on indicators of muscle damage including: maximal strength decrement (MVIC), rate of muscle soreness (DOMS), concentration of plasma creatine kinase (CK) and increased high muscle signal on T2 weighted imag

A randomized controlled trial of progressive resistance training in depressed elders.

BACKGROUND: Depression in elderly people may be contributed to by the multiple losses of aging. Exercise has the potential to positively impact many of these losses simultaneously. We tested the hypothesis that progressive resistance training (PRT) would reduce depression while improving physiologic capacity, quality of life, morale, function and self-efficacy without adverse events in an older, significantly depressed population. METHODS: We conducted a 10-week randomized controlled trial of volunteers aged 60 and above with major or minor depression or dysthymia. Subjects were randomized fo

Nrf2 deficiency blunts exercise training-induced adaptations of coronary resistance arteries.

Exercise training upregulates nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) expression and antioxidant production in various tissues; however, little is known about the role of Nrf2 in exercise training-induced adaptations of blood vessels. This study investigated how deletion of Nrf2 affects vasomotor function in coronary resistance arteries in sedentary and exercise-trained rats. Wild-type (WT) and Nrf2 knockout (KO) rats underwent 10 weeks of treadmill exercise or remained sedentary. Coronary resistance arteries were isolated for assessment of vasomotor responses. In resistance arterie

Exercise Classification in Resistance Training: A Systematic Review of Technological Approaches.

BACKGROUND: Modern sensor technology allows for objective tracking of resistance training exercises, yet the accuracy with which these technological approaches can classify which exercise is being completed is mixed. With commercially available technology commonly claiming the ability to characterise resistance training variables (e.g. exercise type and volume), synthesis of the current evidence base is warranted. OBJECTIVES: The aims of this systematic review were to (1) summarise the methodologies which have been used to achieve exercise prediction in resistance training and (2) compare the

Higher resistance training volume offsets muscle hypertrophy nonresponsiveness in older individuals.

The magnitude of muscle hypertrophy in response to resistance training (RT) is highly variable between individuals (response heterogeneity). Manipulations in RT variables may modulate RT-related response heterogeneity; yet, this remains to be determined. Using a within-subject unilateral design, we aimed to investigate the effects of RT volume manipulation on whole muscle hypertrophy [quadriceps muscle cross-sectional area (qCSA)] among nonresponders and responders to a low RT dose (single-set). We also investigated the effects of RT volume manipulation on muscle strength in these responsivene

Isometric Resistance Training to Manage Hypertension: Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Hypertension is the primary risk factor for cardiovascular disease and adequate blood pressure control is often elusive. The objective of this work was to conduct a meta-analysis of trial data of isometric resistance training (IRT) studies in people with hypertension, to establish if IRT produced an anti-hypertensive effect. A database search (PubMed, CINAHL, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and MEDLINE) identified randomised controlled and crossover trials of IRT versus a sedentary or sham control group in adults with hypertension. RECENT FINDINGS: We includ

Resistance Training Following Median Sternotomy: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Despite no evidence to support weight limitations following median sternotomy, sternal precautions continue to be routinely prescribed. Moreover, international cardiac rehabilitation guidelines lack sufficient detail for the implementation of resistance training. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to determine what the literature defines as resistance training; how resistance training is applied, progressed and evaluated; and, whether resistance training improves physical and functional recovery postoperatively in the cardiac surgical population. Acute and training effects of resistance exercise on heart rate variability.

Heart rate variability (HRV) has been used as a non-invasive method to evaluate heart rate (HR) regulation by the parasympathetic and sympathetic divisions of the autonomic nervous system. In this review, we discuss the effect of resistance exercise both acutely and after training on HRV in healthy individuals and in those with diseases characterized by autonomic dysfunction, such as hypertension and fibromyalgia. HR recovery after exercise is influenced by parasympathetic reactivation and sympathetic recovery to resting levels. Therefore, examination of HRV in response to acute exercise yield

Effects of vibration and resistance training on neuromuscular and hormonal measures.

The aim was to study whether whole body vibration (WBV) combined with conventional resistance training (CRT) induces a higher increase in neuromuscular and hormonal measures compared with CRT or WBV, respectively. Twenty-eight young men were randomized in three groups; squat only (S), combination of WBV and squat (S+V) and WBV only (V). S+V performed six sets with eight repetitions with corresponding eight repetition maximum (RM) loads on the vibrating platform, whereas S and V performed the same protocol without WBV and resistance, respectively.
