Electrospun potato starch nanofibers for thyme essential oil encapsulation: antioxidant activity and thermal resistance.

BACKGROUND: Thyme essential oil (TEO) is an excellent natural substitute for synthetic compounds to maintain the quality and safety of food products. It acts as an antioxidant agent. We aimed to nanoencapsulate TEO at concentrations of 1%, 3%, and 5% (v/w, dry basis) in electrospun nanofibers made of starch (50% w/v) and formic acid (75% v/v). The rheological parameters of the fiber-forming solutions were measured, and various physical and chemical properties of the nanofibers were analyzed. RESULTS: The starch/TEO nanofibers presented homogeneous morphology. The starch nanofibers showed high

Sustained effects of resistant starch on the expression of genes related to carbohydrate digestion/absorption in the small intestine.

Resistant starch (RS) consumption has beneficial effects on health, such as reduced postprandial blood glucose levels. In this study, we evaluated the effect of a 14-day diet containing RS on α-glucosidase activity and the expression of genes related to carbohydrate digestion/absorption in rats. We examined whether the effects of RS persist when the rats were shifted to a control diet. The results suggest that RS consumption reduces α-glucosidase activity and Mgam, Si and Sglt1 mRNA levels in the proximal jejunum. In addition, RS consumption appeared to influence the serum GIP level, up to 2 d

Differential Effects of Roasting and Steaming of Resistant Starch-Rich WE Rice on Murine Intestinal Immune and Barrier Functions.

WE rice, a non-genetically modified double mutant of the waxy and amylose-extender genes, is rich in resistant starch (RS) and has potential as a functional staple food. This study investigated how thermal processing (roasting vs. steaming) of WE brown rice affects its physicochemical properties and intestinal immune- and barrier-related functions in mice. Thermal processing altered RS content, X-ray diffraction intensity, and the degree of gelatinization of WE rice. Male BALB/cA mice were fed diets containing steamed waxy-type rice (0% RS), roasted WE rice (2% RS), or steamed WE rice (2% RS)

Resistant Starch and Microbiota-Derived Secondary Metabolites: A Focus on Postbiotic Pathways in Gut Health and Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

Resistant starch (RS) is emerging as a multifunctional dietary component and delivery platform for microbiota-accessible carbohydrates. Upon fermentation by gut microbiota, particularly in the colon, RS generates a wide spectrum of postbiotic compounds-including short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), indoles, bile acid derivatives, and neuroactive amines such as GABA and serotonin precursors. These metabolites modulate gut-brain signaling, immune responses, and intestinal barrier integrity, which are critical pathways in the pathophysiology of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). This review synthesizes

Recent developments in enzymatic preparation, physicochemical properties, bioactivity, and application of resistant starch type III from staple food grains.

Resistant starch (RS) was classified into five types and referred to the starch that cannot be digested and absorbed by the small intestine of healthy human beings. Among them, RS3 has received a lot of attention from researchers because of its good functional properties and greater application prospects. Meanwhile, the enzymatic method is widely used in the preparation of RS3 because of its high efficiency and environmental protection. α-Amylase and pullulanase as the main enzymes can effectively improve the yield of RS3. The physical properties of RS3 have an excellent potential for applicat

Maternal dietary resistant starch does not improve piglet's gut and liver metabolism when challenged with a high fat diet.

BACKGROUND: In the past several years, the use of resistant starch (RS) as prebiotic has extensively been studied in pigs, and this mostly in the critical period around weaning. RS is believed to exert beneficial effects on the gastrointestinal tract mainly due to higher levels of short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and an improved microbiota profile. In this study, sows were fed digestible starch (DS) or RS during late gestation and lactation and the possible maternal effect of RS on the overall health of the progeny was assessed. Since RS is also described to have a positive effect on metabolism

A randomized placebo-controlled prevention trial of aspirin and/or resistant starch in young people with familial adenomatous polyposis.

Evidence supporting aspirin and resistant starch (RS) for colorectal cancer prevention comes from epidemiologic and laboratory studies (aspirin and RS) and randomized controlled clinical trials (aspirin). Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) strikes young people and, untreated, confers virtually a 100% risk of colorectal cancer and early death. We conducted an international, multicenter, randomized, placebo-controlled trial of aspirin (600 mg/d) and/or RS (30 g/d) for from 1 to 12 years to prevent disease progression in FAP patients from 10 to 21 years of age. In a 2 × 2 factorial design, pati

Resistant starch-enriched rice varieties improve glucose homeostasis in diabetic mice via modulation of the intestine-liver-pancreas axis.

Diabetes mellitus is a prevalent chronic metabolic disease. At present, the efficacy and mechanism of different varieties of resistant-starch-rich rice (RSRR) diet in improving diabetes have not yet been thoroughly analyzed. This study evaluated the effects of a 6-week feeding period with two RSRR varieties, Yueyitang 1 (YYT) and Kangtangdao 1 (KTD), alongside a common rice cultivar, Meixiangzhan 2 (MXZ), using a high-fat diet-induced type 2 diabetic mouse model. Results demonstrated that RSRR reduced fasting blood glucose, blood lipids, and postprandial blood glucose response, with KTD being

Exploring the role of type 3 resistant starch crystalline polymorphs in modulating gut health and alleviating inflammation in colitis.

Type 3 Resistant starch (RS3) has garnered increasing attention for its potential therapeutic effects in inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), such as colitis. However, the impact of different crystalline forms of RS3 on the alleviation of colitis remains unclear. This study examined A-type and B-type crystalline RS3 microparticles (ARS and BRS) derived from debranched waxy maize starch. BRS exhibited higher crystallinity and RS content than ARS by around 8% and 11%, respectively. Treatment with ARS and BRS led to a 12.5-31.1% reduction in cytokine levels (TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6) compared to NS, whil

Randomized controlled trial protocol to analyze the effects of rice with different contents of resistant starch on chronic constipation.

The trend of the aging population worldwide is becoming increasingly severe. As people age, constipation becomes increasingly common in older adults, causing varying degrees of physical and psychological harm to them. Dietary intervention is a common nonpharmacological therapy. Resistant starch is a type of dietary fiber that can regulate the gut microbiota and alleviate chronic constipation. However, few studies have explored the effects of different types of rice on chronic constipation in older adults. This protocol aims to evaluate the effects of rice with different contents of resistant s

A carboxymethyl-resistant starch/polyacrylic acid semi-IPN hydrogel with excellent adhesive and antibacterial properties for peri-implantitis prevention.

Hydrogels possess inherent characteristics that render them promising for the prevention of peri-implantitis. Nonetheless, hydrogels with singular network structures are incapable of concurrently achieving the desired adhesion and mechanical properties. In this work, a carboxymethyl resistant starch/polyacrylic acid semi-interpenetrating (CMRS/PAA semi-IPN) hydrogel was successfully prepared in one step. Its morphology, structure, mechanical properties, and adhesion properties were systematically assessed, which revealed a homogeneously porous structure with a commendable mechanical strength o

Beneficial Effect of Kidney Bean Resistant Starch on Hyperlipidemia-Induced Acute Pancreatitis and Related Intestinal Barrier Damage in Rats.

Accumulating attention has been focused on resistant starch (RS) due to its blood-lipid-lowering activities. However, reports on the potential bioactivities of RS for preventing hyperlipidemia acute pancreatitis (HLAP) are limited. Therefore, in this study, an acute pancreatitis model was set up by feeding a hyperlipidemia diet to rats, and subsequently evaluating the anti-HLAP effect of RS in kidney beans. The results show that the IL-6, IL-1β, and TNF-α of serum in each RS group were decreased by 18.67-50.00%, 7.92-22.89%, and 8.06-34.04%, respectively, compared with the model group (MOD). I

Dietary resistant starch prevents urinary excretion of 25-hydroxycholecalciferol and vitamin D-binding protein in type 1 diabetic rats.

Diabetes is a rapidly growing epidemic affecting millions of Americans and has been implicated in a number of devastating secondary complications. We previously demonstrated that type 2 diabetic rats exhibit vitamin D deficiency due to aberrant megalin-mediated endocytosis and excessive urinary excretion of 25-hydroxycholecalciferol (25D3) and vitamin D-binding protein (DBP). Here, we examined whether a model of type 1 diabetes [T1D; streptozotocin (STZ)-treated Sprague-Dawley rats] would similarly excrete abnormally high concentrations of 25D3 and DBP due to renal damage and compromised expre

Room-temperature curing high-strength, water-resistant, flame-retardant adhesive based on aluminum dihydrogen phosphate and gelatinized starch cross-linking.

Aluminum dihydrogen phosphate (ADP) adhesives, known for their non-toxicity, simple preparation, low cost, and exceptional thermal stability, are considered a promising alternative to formaldehyde-based adhesives. However, their industrial application is limited by the need for a high curing temperature. This study introduces a novel adhesive based on the ADP modified by gelatinized starch (GS), with alumina (Al₂O₃) as a filler, which can be prepared through simple solid-liquid mixing. GS and ADP form covalent cross-links at room temperature, and the incorporation of Al₂O₃ significantly reduce

Postprandial PYY increase by resistant starch supplementation is independent of net portal appearance of short-chain fatty acids in pigs.

Increased dietary fiber (DF) fermentation and short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) production may stimulate peptide tyrosine-tyrosine (PYY) secretion. In this study, the effects of hindgut SCFA production on postprandial PYY plasma levels were assessed using different experimental diets in a porto-arterial catheterized pig model. The pigs were fed experimental diets varying in source and levels of DF for one week in 3×3 Latin square designs. The DF sources were whole-wheat grain, wheat aleurone, rye aleurone-rich flour, rye flakes, and resistant starch. Postprandial blood samples were collected from
