With the emerging use of tracheal sound analysis to detect and monitor respiratory tract changes such as those found in asthma and obstructive sleep apnea, there is a need to link the attributes of these easily measured sounds first to the underlying anatomy, and then to specific pathophysiology. To begin this process, we have developed a model of the acoustic properties of the entire respiratory tract (supraglottal plus subglottal airways) over the frequency range of tracheal sound measurements, 100 to 3000 Hz. The respiratory tract is represented by a transmission line acoustical analogy wit

BACKGROUND: The effect of body position on the generation of abnormal respiratory sounds (eg, snoring and stridor) is well recognized. Postural effects on normal lung sounds have been studied in less detail but need to be clarified if respiratory acoustic measurements are to be used effectively in clinical practice.
METHODS: Lung sounds and airflow were recorded in six healthy male subjects. Two acoustic sensors were placed over corresponding sites of the right and left chest, first anteriorly and then on the back. Subjects were studied in sitting, supine, prone, and lateral decubitus positio

This paper proposes accurate respiratory rate estimation using nasal breath sound recordings from a smartphone. Specifically, the proposed method detects nasal airflow using a built-in smartphone microphone or a headset microphone placed underneath the nose. In addition, we also examined if tracheal breath sounds recorded by the built-in microphone of a smartphone placed on the paralaryngeal space can also be used to estimate different respiratory rates ranging from as low as 6 breaths/min to as high as 90 breaths/min. The true breathing rates were measured using inductance plethysmography ban

A one-month-old male infant was referred because of noisy breathing sounds, feeding difficulty and shortness of breath. A lateral radiography of the neck showed abnormal soft tissue mass at tongue base. While waiting for a scheduled bronchoscopic examination, respiratory distress and noisy breathing sounds disappeared after nasogastric suctioning. Dramatic improvement in respiratory distress in a young infant with feeding difficulties may have been due to rupture of a tongue-base cyst following oropharyngeal manipulations.

Respiratory monitoring is crucial during monitored anaesthesia care (MAC) to ensure patient safety. Patients undergoing procedures like gastrointestinal endoscopy and dental interventions under MAC have a heightened risk of aspiration. Despite the risks, no current system or device can evaluate aspiration risk. This study presents a novel acoustic monitoring system designed to detect fluid retention in the upper airway during MAC. We conducted a prospective observational study with 60 participants undergoing dental treatment under MAC. We utilized a prototype acoustic monitoring system to asse

INTRODUCTION: Monitoring cardiac and respiratory function during helicopter transports can be difficult, so the authors devised a study of the esophageal stethoscope for pediatric patients.
SETTING: The study was conducted at Pediflite in Tennessee, which transports between 250 to 300 pediatric patients every year.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A disposable esophageal stethoscope was used as an adjunct to other monitoring systems in intubated patients. Prior to transport, the stethoscope was placed orally by the respiratory therapist and advanced to the point where heart sounds are heard best, at w

Auscultation, a cost-effective and non-invasive part of physical examination, is essential to diagnose pediatric respiratory disorders. Electronic stethoscopes allow transmission, storage, and analysis of lung sounds. We aimed to develop a machine learning model to classify pediatric respiratory sounds. Lung sounds were digitally recorded during routine physical examinations at a pediatric pulmonology outpatient clinic from July to November 2019 and labeled as normal, crackles, or wheezing. Ensemble support vector machine models were trained and evaluated for four classification tasks (normal

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Wheezing is a common symptom of patients caused by asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases. Wheezing detection identifies wheezing lung sounds and helps physicians in diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of pulmonary diseases. Different from the traditional way to detect wheezing sounds using digital image process methods, automatic wheezing detection uses computerized tools or algorithms to objectively and accurately assess and evaluate lung sounds. We propose an innovative machine learning-based approach for wheezing detection. The phases of the respirator

Tracheal sounds represent information about the upper airway and respiratory airflow, however, they can be contaminated by the snoring sounds. The sound of snoring has spectral content in a wide range that overlaps with that of breathing sounds during sleep. For assessing respiratory airflow using tracheal breathing sound, it is essential to remove the effect of snoring. In this paper, an automatic and unsupervised wavelet-based snoring removal algorithm is presented. Simultaneously with full-night polysomnography, the tracheal sound signals of 9 subjects with different levels of airway obstru

Auscultation is a method that involves listening to sounds from the patient's body, mainly using a stethoscope, to diagnose diseases. The stethoscope allows for non-invasive, real-time diagnosis, and it is ideal for diagnosing respiratory diseases and first aid. However, accurate interpretation of respiratory sounds using a stethoscope is a subjective process that requires considerable expertise from clinicians. To overcome the shortcomings of existing stethoscopes, research is actively being conducted to develop an artificial intelligence deep learning model that can interpret breathing sound

Sleep Apnea (SA) is a very common but underdiagnosed respiratory disorder. SA has 2 main types, obstructive and central sleep apnea (OSA and CSA, respectively). The distinction between the 2 types is important for proper clinical management. Our aim in this study was to deploy acoustic analysis of breath sounds to distinguish central from obstructive events. We recorded breath sounds from 29 patients from which 45 segments with obstructive only and 40 segments with central only respiratory events were isolated. Subsequently, 10 acoustic features were extracted and used to identify basic breath

Breath and cardiac sounds are two major bio sound signals. In this, heart sounds are produced by movement of some body parts such as heart valve, leaflets and the blood flow through the vessels, whereas lung sounds generates due to the air in and out flow through airways during breathing cycle. These two signals are recorded from chest region. These two signals have very high clinical importance for the patient who is critically ill. The lung functions and the cardiac cycles are continuously monitored for such patients with the help of the bio sound signal captured using suitable sensing mecha

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies have reported that the noise generated by dental equipment can interfere with the auscultation of respiratory sounds during sedation. Therefore, this study aimed to identify whether positing the acoustic sensor on the chest or cervical position would be least susceptible to interference from dental suction device noise, a prominent noise noted during respiratory sound monitoring during dental sedation.
METHODS: This prospective cohort study was conducted with 30 students. Sound intensity (dB) and frequency (kHz) levels from the dental suction were recorded from the

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: It is difficult for clinicians to identify changes in breath sounds caused by bronchoconstriction when wheezing is not audible. A breath sound analyser can identify changes in the frequency of breath sounds caused by bronchoconstriction. The present study aimed to identify the changes in the frequency of breath sounds during bronchoconstriction and bronchodilatation using a breath sound analyser.
METHODS: Thirty-six children (8.2 +/- 3.7 years; males : females, 22 : 14) underwent spirometry, methacholine inhalation challenge and breath sound analysis. Methacholine in

OBJECTIVE: To describe and to correlate the aerodynamic and manovacuometric voice measurements of pregnant women.
METHODS: The following evaluations were carried out on 49 pregnant women - between 18 and 40 years old - in the second and third trimesters of gestational age: respiratory muscle strength, maximum phonation time of /a/, habitual, minimum, and maximum sound pressure levels. The data were statistically described and tested for the hypothesis of no association between voice measurements and refence levels, and for the correlation between voice measurements.
RESULTS: The maximum phon

The possibilities for using acoustical analysis as a noninvasive measure of the degree of obstruction created by an enlarged pharyngeal tonsil (adenoid) are discussed. The method capitalizes on the relationship which exists between a specific obstruction of the respiratory tract and the resulting respiratory sound. Results indicate that as the adenoid increases in size relative to the size of the nasopharynx, the dominant components of the respiratory sound spectrum shift towards a higher frequency range. Furthermore, the correlation found between the assessments of the obstruction due to vari

BACKGROUND: Auscultation is a critical diagnostic feature of lung diseases, but it is subjective and challenging to measure accurately. To overcome these limitations, artificial intelligence models have been developed.
METHODS: In this prospective study, we aimed to compare respiratory sound feature extraction methods to develop an optimal machine learning model for detecting wheezing in children. Pediatric pulmonologists recorded and verified 103 instances of wheezing and 184 other respiratory sounds in 76 children. Various methods were used for sound feature extraction, and dimensions were

The automatic detection of adventitious lung sounds is a valuable tool to monitor respiratory diseases like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Crackles are adventitious and explosive respiratory sounds that are usually associated with the inflammation or infection of the small bronchi, bronchioles and alveoli. In this study a multi-feature approach is proposed for the detection of events, in the frame space, that contain one or more crackles. The performance of thirty-five features was tested. These features include thirty-one features usually used in the context of Music Information Retri

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Respiratory diseases are among the most significant causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide, causing substantial strain on society and health systems. Over the last few decades, there has been increasing interest in the automatic analysis of respiratory sounds and electrical impedance tomography (EIT). Nevertheless, no publicly available databases with both respiratory sound and EIT data are available.
METHODS: In this work, we have assembled the first open-access bimodal database focusing on the differential diagnosis of respiratory diseases (BRACETS: Bimodal Re
