[Distant metastases of epitheliomas of the upper respiratory and digestive tracts].

Distant metastases of ENT tumors are rare; when analysing 1.666 patients, we found them in 6.5%. They started especially from tumors of the hypopharynx (19.7%), oral cavity (7.6%), oropharynx (5.6%) and larynx (3.2%). 9 metastases were diagnosed, before therapy started, all the others appeared late, even later than 5 years after therapy in some cases of carcinoma of the larynx. The metastases were situated in the lung (71 cases), the skeleton (45 cases), the pleura (11 cases) and the liver (8 cases), but in rare instances in almost every organon. The main examinations for staging are therefore

[HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) implication in other cancers than gynaecological].

Worldwide, approximately 5 to 10% of the population is infected by a Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). Some of these viruses, with a high oncogenic risk (HPV HR), are responsible for about 5% of cancer. It is now accepted that almost all carcinomas of the cervix and the vulva are due to an HPV HR (HPV16 and 18) infection. However, these viruses are known to be involved in the carcinogenesis of many other cancers (head and neck [SCCHN], penis, anus). For head and neck cancer, HPV infection is considered as a good prognostic factor. The role of HPV HR in anal cancer is also extensively studied in hig

New tumor entities in the 4th edition of the World Health Organization classification of head and neck tumors: Nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses and skull base.

The World Health Organization recently published the 4th edition of the Classification of Head and Neck Tumors, including several new entities, emerging entities, and significant updates to the classification and characterization of tumor and tumor-like lesions, specifically as it relates to nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses, and skull base in this overview. Of note, three new entities (NUT carcinoma, seromucinous hamartoma, biphenotypic sinonasal sarcoma,) were added to this section, while emerging entities (SMARCB1-deficient carcinoma and HPV-related carcinoma with adenoid cystic-like features

Hepatic neoplasms from internally deposited 144CeCl3.

Fifty-five dogs were exposed by inhalation to graded activity levels of 144CeCl3, a relatively soluble form of the beta-emitting radionuclide. A large portion of the 144Ce translocated from lung to liver and skeleton. Significant radiation doses were delivered to the respiratory tract, liver, and skeleton; however, the liver received the greatest cumulative absorbed dose. Liver tumors were the most frequently observed neoplasms in these exposed dogs and included 7 primary hepatic hemangiosarcomas, 1 cholangiocarcinoma, 1 hepatocellular carcinoma, 1 fibrosarcoma, 4 biliary cystadenomas, and 1 f

Nonepithelial tumors of the nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses, and nasopharynx. A clinicopathologic study. XIII: Meningiomas.

Twelve cases of meningiomas involving the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses are reported. Meningiomas only rarely involve the upper respiratory tract; these 12 cases were found among the 566,000 surgical pathology cases that have been studied in this laboratory. In this series, five meningiomas probably arose in the cranial cavity and secondarily extended into the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. Because radiographs demonstrated hyperostosis or bone destruction, three other tumors could have involved the cranial cavity, but this was never proven. In two other cases, the meningiomas appeare

An unusual presentation of herpes infection in the head and neck.

Herpes simplex virus (HSV) is among a spectrum of viruses known to affect the upper aerodigestive tract. Gingivostomatitis and pharyngitis are the most common clinical manifestations of first-episode HSV infection, whereas recurrent herpes labialis is the most common clinical manifestation of reactivation HSV infection. Herpetic viral infections seldom attack the larynx. Laryngeal disorders provoked by the herpes virus are characterised by a large spectrum of presentations and polymorphisms, and can simulate mucous lesions such as an extensive laryngeal neoplasm (supraglottic tumour). We repor

A case of primary plasmacytoma of lymph nodes.

Extramedullary plasmacytoma may originate in any organ, either as a primary tumor or as a facet of systemic multiple myeloma. These solid lesions most commonly affect the upper respiratory tract, gastrointestinal and urogenital tract, skin, and lung. Primary plasmacytoma of the lymph node is a rare hematologic neoplasm, which usually manifests as an enlargement of the cervical lymph nodes with no evidence of any other plasma cell dyscrasia. A 56-year-old man was admitted, due to the presence of multiple palpable masses in the right cervical and submandibular areas. Surgical resection revealed

Teratoid carcinosarcoma of the paranasal sinuses.

Malignant tumours with teratoid or blastomatous features are exceptionally rare in the upper respiratory tract with only 8 documented cases, including the 3 in this report. The tumours occurred in adults aged 27 to 62 yr, and the sites of origin were the ethmoid sinus (4 cases), ethmoid and other paranasal sinuses (2 cases), unspecified sinuses (1 case) and nasopharynx (1 case). The disease was rapidly fatal in 3 cases in which treatment was restricted to surgery and was associated with longer survivals in those given supportive radiotherapy. The tumours are locally aggressive and may invade s

Surprise Egg in the Nasopharynx: Basal Cell Adenocarcinoma.

Basal cell adenocarcinoma is a rare salivary gland neoplasm. It is most commonly seen in the parotid gland, and its involvement in the minor salivary glands or upper respiratory tract is very rare. Surgical excision and/or radiotherapy are the mainstay treatment modalities. The nasopharynx is an unusual location for salivary gland basal cell adenocarcinoma. In this case report, the nasopharyngeal punch biopsy of a 60-year-old male patient was reported as salivary gland adenoma, but the final pathological diagnosis was changed to basal cell adenocarcinoma after endoscopic nasopharyngectomy. Invasive sinonasal actinomycosis: case report and literature review.

Actinomycosis is a rare anaerobic bacterial infection typically caused by Actinomyces israelii. Although part of normal flora in the oral cavity, and respiratory and digestive tracts, A israelii can give rise to pathologic infections most commonly reported in the oral cavity from odontogenic causes. We present a rare case of invasive actinomycosis presenting with extensive midface destruction involving the maxilla and paranasal sinuses, with mucosal necrosis mimicking an aggressive neoplasm. The diagnosis is usually reached only after histopathologic analysis showing characteristic sulfur gran

Polydactyly and Risk of Cancer.

INTRODUCTION: Syndromic polydactyly is often associated with an increased cancer risk. However, limited data exist regarding nonsyndromic polydactyly and its associated risk of subsequent malignancy. Therefore, our purpose was to investigate differences in rates of both malignant and benign neoplasms among pediatric patients diagnosed with nonsyndromic polydactyly compared with matched controls. METHODS: The TriNetX US Collaborative Network database was queried using ICD-9 and ICD-10 codes to identify patients aged 10 and younger diagnosed with any form of polydactyly. Patients were then divi

Paraneoplastic pemphigus and myasthenia gravis as the first manifestations of a rare case of pancreatic follicular dendritic cell sarcoma: CT findings and review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (FDCS) is a rare neoplasm that originates from follicular dendritic cells in lymphoid tissue while paraneoplastic pemphigus (PNP) is an autoimmune blistering disease associated with neoplasms. Pancreatic FDCS associated with PNP and myasthenia gravis (MG) is even rarer and highly malignant. We present the clinical data, pathological materials and computed tomography (CT) features of a rare case of this disease. CASE PRESENTATION: A 49-year-old woman presented with repeated ptosis of both eyelids, oral ulcers and erosions. Her laboratory results sh

Pneumocystis jirovecii in the lower respiratory tract of immunocompetent individuals.

BACKGROUND: Pneumocystis jirovecii colonization rates in healthy patients are unclear. Previously published studies suggest that the fungus could play a role in the physiopathology and progression of chronic respiratory diseases. AIMS: The goal of this study was to determine the prevalence of colonization by this fungus in the lower respiratory tract of immunocompetent patients who are not at risk of dysbiosis. METHODS: The presence of P. jirovecii was confirmed in the bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) samples from adults who underwent bronchoscopy for non-infectious reasons, had no immunosuppres

Diet and cancer in Mediterranean countries: carbohydrates and fats.

OBJECTIVE: Several aspects of the diet characteristic of the Mediterranean countries are considered favourable not only on cardiovascular disease, but also on cancer risk. We considered some aspects of the Mediterranean diet (including, in particular, the consumption of olive oil and carbohydrates) on cancer risk. DESIGN, SETTING AND SUBJECTS: Data were derived from a series of case-control studies, conducted in Italy since the early 1990s, on over 10,000 cases of thirteen cancer sites and over 17,000 controls. RESULTS: Olive oil, and other mono- and unsaturated fats, appear to be favourable

The predominant site of pharyngeal lesions in patients with recurrent respiratory papillomatosis.

PURPOSE: Recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP) is a disorder characterized by the frequent recurrence of benign neoplasms in the respiratory tract. Some patients with RRP develop laryngeal papilloma, while others present with extralaryngeal lesions in the nose, pharynx, and trachea. The present study aimed to determine the pharyngeal sites where RRP-related lesions develop more frequently. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 127 patients treated at our department between January 2015 and December 2020. We compared the human papilloma virus (HPV) infection status a

Pathology of wild Norway rats in Vancouver, Canada.

To achieve a contemporary understanding of the common and rare lesions that affect wild, urban Norway rats ( Rattus norvegicus), we conducted a detailed pathology analysis of 672 rats from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Grossly evident lesions, such as wounds, abscesses, and neoplasms, were present in 71 of 672 rats (11%) and tended to be severe. The most common and significant lesions were infectious and inflammatory, most often affecting the respiratory tract and associated with bite wounds. We assessed a subset of rats (up to n = 406 per tissue) for the presence of microscopic lesions
