We write to report two rare cases of retinal vasculitis following administration of vaccinations. Both patients received recent vaccinations (within 4 weeks and 2 months respectively) and presented with unilateral visual loss due to retinal arteriolar vasculitis. Investigations did not reveal any other causes of vasculitis. The first patient's ocular inflammation settled following periocular steroid injection, whereas the second patient required the additional use of oral corticosteroid. Both patients had improved vision following treatment. Vaccinations can cause an autoimmune reaction. Syste

BACKGROUND: Granulomatosis with polyangiitis, also known as Wegener's granulomatosis, is a chronic systemic inflammatory disease that can also involve the eyes. We report a case of massive retinal and preretinal hemorrhages with perivascular changes as the initial signs in granulomatosis with polyangiitis (Wegener's granulomatosis).
CASE PRESENTATION: A 39-year-old Caucasian male presented with blurred vision in his right eye, myalgia and arthralgia, recurrent nose bleeds and anosmia. Fundus image of his right eye showed massive retinal hemorrhages and vasculitis-like angiopathy, although no

Retinal vascular inflammation, a potentially blinding condition (herein: retinal vasculitis (RV)) is commonly associated with a heterogeneous group of diseases characterized by systemic inflammatory cell infiltration and/or necrosis of blood vessel walls. RV may arise as an isolated ocular disorder, as part of systemic vasculitis (Wegener's granulomatosis and Adamantiadis-Behcet Disease), or it can be secondary to an underlying connective tissue disease (systemic lupus erythematosus, sarcoidosis, and rheumatoid arthritis), systemic infection, or malignancy. Depending on the type of RV, it can

Six monkeys had prior systemic immunization followed by intraretinal challenge to each eye with Toxoplasma antigens. All eyes developed iridocyclitis, vitritis, and retinal edema, but no necrotizing retinochoroiditis. One-half of the eyes were then challenged with living organisms and the other one-half with Toxoplasma antigens. All eyes developed iridocyclitis, vitritis, and retinal edema, but no necrotizing retinochoroiditis. Four months later, the right eye of each monkey was challenged with living Toxoplasma organisms injected intraretinally. Each injected eye developed iridocyclitis, vitr

PURPOSE: To evaluate changes in vascular leakage on fluorescein angiogram (FA) after suprachoroidal triamcinolone acetonide (SCS-TA) in patients with retinal vasculitis.
METHODS: In this single-center, retrospective case series, the medical records of patients receiving a single SCS-TA injection for retinal vasculitis between January and December 2024 were reviewed. The primary outcome was the change in FA grade after injection using the Angiography Scoring for Uveitis Working Group scoring system. Secondary outcomes included best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and intraocular pressure (IOP)

Microscopic polyangiitis (MPA) is a rare, autoimmune, small-vessel vasculitis usually described with the presence of perinuclear antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (p-ANCA). It encompasses a broad spectrum of clinical features, including fatigue, weight loss, fever, arthralgia, skin lesions, and involvement of the lungs or kidneys. Ocular manifestations, however, are extremely rare. We report a case of a 60-year-old Caucasian male who presented with sudden left-hand weakness, fever, and amaurosis fugax. He also complained of fatigue and stocking-glove paresthesia over the preceding two mont

PURPOSE: Retinal vasculitis (RV) is a complex inflammatory disorder of retinal blood vessels with variability in diagnosis, classification, and management. Despite efforts to standardize definitions, discrepancies persist regarding clinical features, systemic associations, and treatment approaches. This study aimed to assess clinical practices among uveitis specialists to identify areas requiring consensus.
METHODS: A cross-sectional, semi-structured survey was conducted among members of the International Uveitis Study Group (IUSG). Eligible participants were uveitis specialists with formal t

A 48-year-old woman with a history of dermatomyositis (DMS) presented with 2 weeks of worsening myalgias, weakness, and diffuse edema following cessation of her systemic immunosuppression and subsequently developed severe bilateral vision loss consistent with bilateral frosted branch angiitis. Multimodal imaging was performed, and the patient was successfully treated with pulse-dose steroids and intravenous immunoglobulin, as well as intravitreal aflibercept. Ophthalmic involvement of DMS is typically limited to episcleritis, conjunctivitis, and uveitis. We present an uncommon case of bilatera

Lichen planus (LP) is an autoimmune, inflammatory disease of unknown etiology that commonly affects the skin and mucous membranes. Retinal vasculitis is a group of vision-threatening disorders, in which autoimmunity is thought to play a role in pathogenesis. We present the case of a patient who was diagnosed with retinal vasculitis and who was followed up for mucosal LP. LP has not been reported as a cause of retinal vasculitis in the literature. We believe that the retinal vasculitis in this case was related to LP because cellular immunity plays a role in the pathogenesis of both entities.

Behçet's disease (BD) is more common in eastern than western countries. Physicians have frequently encountered problems in its treatment, especially eye involvement. Recurrent oral and genital aphthous ulcerations are the hallmarks of Behçet's disease but other organs can be involved and ocular disease is one of the most disabling manifestations. Up to now, there are some problems in treatment of the retinal vasculitis due to Behçet's disease. We reported one patient, with visual loss due to retinal vasculitis that was resistant to prednisolone and azathioprine. Our patient was treated success

PURPOSE: Retinal detachments (RD) secondary to retinal vasculitis are highly complex. We report the clinical profile and outcome of vitrectomy in RDs secondary to retinal vasculitis in terms of intraoperative findings, final anatomical, and functional outcome.
METHODS: In a retrospective review of 68 patients (6 with bilateral RD; 74 eyes) undergoing pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) between 2000 and 2015 for vasculitic RD, tractional RD was present in 50 (67.57%) eyes and combined RD in 24 (32.43%) eyes.
RESULTS: The mean age was 31.54 ± 9.95 years (62 males, 6 females). Fibrovascular proliferati

PURPOSE: To identify prognostic factors for poor visual outcomes in patients with isolated retinal vasculitis and to elucidate the outcome of immunosuppressive treatment without the use of antituberculosis drugs for patients with retinal vasculitis associated with a positive QuantiFERON-TB Gold In-Tube (QFT) test.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed of patients presenting with retinal vasculitis. After the diagnosis of active retinal vasculitis had been confirmed by fluorescein angiography and other possible causes of retinal vasculitis had been excluded, patients were categor

PURPOSE: To demonstrate the utility of widefield swept-source optical coherence tomography angiography (SS-OCTA) in identifying microvascular abnormalities in patients with presumed tubercular retinal vasculitis (TRV).
OBSERVATIONS: We present a case series of three patients with presumed TRV confirmed by positive QuantiFERON-TB Gold testing. All patients exhibited clinical signs of occlusive retinal vasculitis, including perivascular inflammation, peripheral capillary nonperfusion, and neovascular complications. We present the case of a 46-year-old man who presented with bilateral panuveitis and occlusive retinal vasculitis 6 months after being acutely admitted with abnormal liver function and diagnosed with primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC). Initial investigations by the medical and ophthalmic departments including all autoimmune investigations were within normal parameters. Of particular interest was the high likelihood of inadvertent androgenic-anabolic steroid self-suppression of disease. As a lifelong bodybuilder, the patient had been taking oral and intramuscular steroids for years. He became

PURPOSE: This work aims to present treatment and long-term follow-up of a 31-year-old woman with dermatomyositis who presented with hemorrhagic retinal vasculitis and macular edema.
METHODS: A retrospective case report is presented.
RESULTS: A 31-year-old woman with dermatomyositis treated with systemic immunosuppression was evaluated for acute, reduced vision. Best-corrected visual acuity was hand motion in the right eye and 20/200 in the left eye. Fundus examination revealed diffuse intraretinal hemorrhages, cotton-wool spots, and vascular sheathing with a frosted branch angiitis-like appe

INTRODUCTION: Worldwide, tuberculosis is the leading cause of death from an infectious disease. Ocular involvement can cause significant and permanent vision loss. Ocular manifestations of tuberculosis often present with visual symptoms. Asymptomatic ocular tuberculosis is uncommon and yet can have serious consequences if missed.
CASE REPORT: An immunocompetent 26-year-old Filipino man living in regional Australia who was diagnosed with active pulmonary tuberculosis and started on antitubercular therapy. He was referred to an ophthalmologist for baseline ethambutol screening to exclude pre-ex

There are many differential diagnoses in investigating patients who present with retinal vasculitis, and the laboratory investigations used to investigate this have low-to-moderate sensitivity and/or specificity. Diagnoses include conditions such as tuberculosis or sarcoidosis, which may require long courses of antibiotics or immunosuppression. Influenza vaccination has been recognised as a cause of vasculitis for decades, although a purely ocular presentation is rare. We present a case of a 78-year-old Caucasian woman presenting with a single vessel arterial vasculitis of the right eye 8 week
