Axial length and refractive error in X-linked retinoschisis.

PURPOSE: To examine the relationship between axial length and refractive error in patients with X-linked retinoschisis. DESIGN: To determine whether the hypermetropia frequently found in patients with X-linked retinoschisis is axial hypermetropia. METHODS: The axial length and refractive error were measured in 29 right eyes of 29 patients. The patients were divided into two groups: a juvenile group with ages <13 years (12 eyes) and an adult group with ages > or =13 years (17 eyes). The axial length of the right eye of 30 adult men without eye diseases whose refractive error ranged from +/- 1

Genotypic and phenotypic spectrum of X-linked retinoschisis in Australia.

BACKGROUND: X-linked retinoschisis (XLRS), an X-linked recessive inherited degenerative retinopathy, is characterized by splitting in the nerve fibre layer and is caused by alterations in the RS1 gene. The aim of the present study was to review both the phenotypic features of XLRS and the mutation spectrum of the RS1 gene in an Australian cohort. METHODS: Patients were recruited from ophthalmic and paediatric hospitals as well as private ophthalmic clinics across Australia. A cohort of 18 presumably unrelated families was identified. Twenty-two affected patients underwent clinical examination

Profound Effect of Light on Cysts in X-Linked Retinoschisis.

PURPOSE: X-linked retinoschisis (XLRS), caused by RS1 pathogenic variants, leads to macular dystrophy. Patients with XLRS show diurnal changes in optical coherence tomography (OCT), with more schisis in the morning. We studied diurnal variation in Rs1-knockout (KO) mice retinal structure and electrical function. METHODS: Rs1-KO mice 2.5 to 4 months old (MO) had electroretinogram (ERG), OCT, and intraocular pressure (IOP) measurements collected at 5 AM and 5 PM on different days and under different experimental conditions. Mice were maintained under standard 12-hour light/dark cycle, reversed

The Progression of Peripapillary Retinoschisis May Indicate the Progression of Glaucoma.

PURPOSE: To identify the temporal correlation between the increase in peripapillary retinoschisis (PPRS) and glaucoma progression during PPRS fluctuation. METHODS: We performed a comparative clinical timeline analysis for PPRS and glaucomatous progression in eyes with PPRS. In particular, the interval between the increase in PPRS extent and glaucoma progression was analyzed. Temporal correlation was defined when the interval was less than one year between glaucoma progression and PPRS increase, including both de novo development and an increase in the amount of retinoschisis on serial optical

X-linked retinoschisis with point mutations in the XLRS1 gene.

BACKGROUND: X-linked retinoschisis (XLRS) is a relatively rare vitreoretinal dystrophy that causes visual loss in young men. Recently, a gene responsible for this disease, designated XLRS1, was identified, and several deleterious gene mutations were reported. OBJECTIVE: To analyze Japanese patients clinically diagnosed as having XLRS formutational changes in the XLRS1 gene. METHODS: Ten patients with XLRS underwent full ophthalmologic examination, including slitlamp biomicroscopy and dilated funduscopy. Genomic DNA was isolated from leukocytes, and all exons of the XLRS1 gene were amplified

Optical coherence tomographic findings of glaucomatous eyes with papillomacular retinoschisis.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the relationship between the shape of the optic nerve head (ONH) margin detected by optical coherence tomography (OCT) and the clinical characteristics of glaucomatous eyes with papillomacular retinoschisis (PMRS). METHODS: The medical record of patients with a PMRS in a glaucomatous eye were reviewed. The eyes were placed into two groups determined by the shape of the ONH margin in the OCT images; eyes with an externally oblique ONH margin (Group 1) and eyes with an internally oblique ONH margin (Group 2). We compared the clinical characteristics of the PMRS of the

Optic disc pit with multiquadrant peripapillary retinoschisis and choroidal coloboma.

An 18-year-old man presented with decreased vision in the right eye (OD) noticed for 1 month. On examination, OD best-corrected visual acuity was 3/60 and the left eye (OS) was 6/6 with intraocular pressure of 12 mm Hg in both the eyes (OU). OD fundus revealed an inferior optic-disc-pit with macular-retinoschisis and an inferior choroidal coloboma. OS fundus was normal. On swept-source optical coherence tomography (SSOCT) radial scans, peripapillary-retinoschisis was seen not only in the macular region but in all the four quadrants. To the best of our knowledge, no such case has been reported

Outcome measures in juvenile X-linked retinoschisis: A systematic review.

X-linked retinoschisis (XLRS) is a leading cause of hereditary juvenile macular degeneration in males resulting in significant vision impairment. Outcome measures to monitor disease progression or therapeutic interventions have evolved with technology. A systematic review was undertaken to evaluate outcome measures for XLRS. Inclusion criteria were all publications examining outcome measures for natural history studies or following an interventional approach for patients with XLRS. Studies which did not present follow-up data were excluded. We searched medical databases including CENTRAL, Ovid

Degenerative peripheral retinoschisis simulating occlusive retinal vasculitis in intermediate uveitis.

Retinoschisis, the horizontal splitting of retinal layers, is classified into four types: hereditary (juvenile or X-linked), degenerative (senile, which is more frequently encountered in clinical practice, or acquired), tractional (associated with vitreoretinal interface abnormalities) and exudative (linked to an optic disc pit).Acquired retinoschisis is reported in intermediate uveitis and is hypothesised to result from chronic vascular leakage and subclinical retinal ischaemia, although evidence remains limited.A senior female patient was referred to the uveitis service for management of sus

Intraocular Pressure Lowering Associated With Worsening Optic Pit-Like Retinoschisis.

In this article, we present a case of optic pit-like macular retinoschisis in the absence of advanced glaucomatous cupping. Intraocular pressure (IOP)-lowering therapy, which was started due to an early concern for glaucoma, caused a worsening of the retinoschisis, which subsequently resolved on discontinuation of the IOP-lowering therapy. Lower IOP likely triggered intraretinal fluid accumulation by facilitating a translaminar gradient from the subarachnoid to intraretinal space. [Ophthalmic Surg Lasers Imaging Retina 2024;55:100-102.].
