OBJECTIVES: To present our surgical techniques and experience with retroperitoneal laparoscopic ureteroureterostomy in 10 patients with retrocaval ureter and review the data on the laparoscopic management of retrocaval ureter published in English.
METHODS: A total of 10 patients with retrocaval ureter underwent laparoscopic ureteroureterostomy. A 3-port, finger and balloon-dissecting, retroperitoneal approach was used. The retrocaval segment of ureter was mobilized and transposed anterior to the inferior vena cava. The ureteroureteral anastomosis was completed with the intracorporal freehand

Retrocaval ureter is one of the very rare congenital anomalies. We report a case of retrocaval ureter in a 6-year-old girl who presented with right flank pain and hydronephrosis. The diagnosis was made on intravenous urography which showed typical "J" shape deformity in the proximal dilated ureter with moderate hydronephrosis. CT scan delineated the course of ureter. The patient was operated and findings were confirmed. The ureter was transected near the pelvis and a pyeloureteric anastomosis with pre-caval transposition of the ureter was performed and the patient was discharged in fair health

OBJECTIVES: To expose the diagnosis and the different laparoscopic approaches for the surgical management of patients with retrocaval ureter (RCU) and to share our experience on two cases.
METHODS: Updated literature review on Pubmed and debating personal experiences including ours (double j stent insertion before the surgery, use of 4 trocards, transperitoneal approach, pyelopyelostomy for the anastomosis…), concerning the laparoscopic treatment of the RCU.
RESULTS: Laparoscopic treatment of RCU is a recommended management for many reasons: less blood loss during the surgery, a shorter hosp

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to compare the clinical efficacy and safety of retroperitoneal laparoscopic and open surgery for the correction of retrocaval ureter.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Clinical data of 14 patients with retrocaval ureter were analyzed retrospectively. Among them, nine were treated by open surgical therapy and five by retroperitoneal laparoscopic surgery. The ureter was transpositioned to a normal anatomic position followed by laparoscopic intracorporeal uretero and ureteric anastomosis.
RESULTS: Open surgery was successfully performed in nine cases. The mean surgery t

Associated congenital anomalies are seen in 21% of retrocaval ureter patients; among them, associated contralateral renal agenesis is a very rare entity. We report one such case of right circumcaval ureter with left renal agenesis, diagnosed after febrile UTI. Surgical correction with uretero-ureterostomy was successful. In literature very few such cases are reported and only one case with renal failure was reported. Unilateral renal agenesis cases complicated by associated such anomalies need definitive management and lifelong clinical monitoring to diagnose and prevent chronic kidney disease

This is to describe a case of a morbidly obese (BMI = 40) female with retrocaval ureter treated with laparoendoscopic single-site surgery. A JJ stent was positioned. A 2 cm umbilical access was created. A single port platform was positioned. The entire ureter was mobilized posterior to the vena cava and transected where the dilated portion ended. The distal ureter was repositioned lateral to the inferior vena cava. Anastomosis was done. A 3 mm trocar was used to assist suturing. At 4-month follow-up, CT revealed no evidence of obstruction of the right kidney and the patient was symptomless. Al

A 70-year-old man with a medical history of diabetes mellitus presented to a local clinic with seven days history of right flank pain and fever. Because there was no symptomatic improvement after one-week antibiotic administration, abdominal ultrasonography and computed tomographic scans were performed to show mass lesions in the right hydropelvis, and he was transferred to our hospital. Retrograde pyelography revealed a retrocaval ureter and a ureteral stent was indwelt. After the symptoms improved, the lesions were removed by percutaneous nephrostomy and fungal balls were diagnosed as Candid

Anomalous anatomic location of a large venous system poses a potential hazard in aortic operations. We encountered a patient with an infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysm who was also found at preoperative contrast-enhanced computed tomography to have a retrocaval right ureter and a preaortic iliac vein confluence. This combined anomaly has not previously been reported except for one postmortem case. As abdominal aortic surgery is currently performed routinely, care must be taken to avoid injury to surrounding organs due to rare anatomic anomalies.

Retrocaval ureter or circumcaval ureter is a rare congenital abnormality arising from dysgenesis of the inferior vena cava (IVC) that results in the right ureter coursing behind and medial to the IVC. The ideal nomenclature for the anomaly is preureteral vena cava, keeping in mind the aberrant embryology. It can result in hydronephrosis and is a rare cause of long-standing cyclical pain abdomen. Ultrasound, intravenous urography, nuclear scintigraphy, computed tomography urography (CTU) and magnetic resonance urography (MRU) have been used in the diagnosis of this abnormality but CTU, with its

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Retrocaval ureter is a rare congenital abnormality resulting from abnormal development of the inferior vena cava (IVC), leading to compression and obstruction of the right ureter. The condition is frequently diagnosed incidentally or presents symptoms related to hydronephrosis. The left retroaortic renal vein is another vascular anomaly with an estimated prevalence of 1.7 % to 3.4 %. However, it is typically asymptomatic.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 9-year-old boy with a history of undescended right testis and hypospadias who presented with intermi

Retrocaval ureter is a rare congenital vascular anomaly described as the passage of the ureter behind the inferior vena cava (IVC) and then turning around the IVC to attain the final lateral position. The condition is usually associated with obstruction in the ipsilateral kidney, causing different degrees of hydronephrosis and complications associated with urinary stasis, such as stone formation. Imaging has a crucial role in the diagnosis and management of retrocaval ureter. CT urography may be the procedure of choice to confirm the diagnosis and avoid retrograde ureteropyelography. A retrocaval ureter is a rare congenital anomaly caused by abnormal development of the inferior vena cava. It usually remains asymptomatic until middle age. A man and a woman aged 35 and 45 years, respectively, presented with right flank pain and hydroureteronephrosis. Computed tomography scans confirmed extrinsic compression by the vena cava. Both patients underwent successful surgical correction, and their postoperative recoveries were smooth. These cases emphasize the importance of early diagnosis and treatment to prevent long-term kidney damage. A retrocaval ureter can mimic obstructive ur

Necropsy examination of an adult neutered male cat, which was humanely destroyed as it had feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) infection, demonstrated the presence of a left retrocaval ureter that was entrapped around the left limb of a double caudal vena cava. These associated anomalies originate from the complex embryofetal development of the caudal vena cava. Since no clinical signs had been reported and no gross lesions related to this anomaly were observed, this manifestation should be simply considered as an anatomical variation.

Background: During the management of patients with hydronephrosis, a possibility of retrocaval ureter (RCU) may emerge indicated by a fish-hook sign or its mimickers. Owing to infrequent incidence, the proper way to diagnose or exclude an RCU is challenging and has not been discussed previously. Methods: The aim of this study was to retrospectively evaluate the children who were suspected to have an RCU during management for urinary tract dilation. An RCU may be missed or misdiagnosed owing to rare incidence. Results: The children with urinary tract dilation in whom RCU was considered are enro

Two cases of right double inferior vena cava (RDIVC) were observed on computed tomography. In one case, the duplicated IVCs were both located to the right of the abdominal aorta and were nearly on the same coronal plane. In the other case, the right IVC showed partial duplication. The right ureter coursed posterior to the lateral IVC, then emerged between the duplicated IVC in both cases. The findings from the two cases presented in this report showed novel anatomical differences, likely attributable to different embryologic processes, as compared to previously reported cases of RDIVC.
