Orthodontic Management of Skeletal Class II Malocclusion with the Invisalign Mandibular Advancement Feature Appliance: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

The treatment of Class II malocclusion due to mandibular retrognathia is one of the most common challenges met in orthodontic practice. When it comes to a growing patient, functional appliances are the optimal way to achieve growth modification by enhancing mandibular growth. Clear aligners have been part of the orthodontic treatment for several decades but until recently they were only used to correct mild malocclusions. In 2017, Align Technology introduced the Invisalign with Mandibular Advancement Feature (IMAF) which replicates the action of functional appliances. As this device is new to

Unilateral cleft foot deformity.

A 17-year-old girl with unilateral atypical cleft foot deformity is reported. In this case the deformity was associated with deafness, mandibular retrognathia and congenital bilateral temporomandibular joint luxation. Family history of cleft foot deformity was not found. A syndactylization procedure with shortening of the big toe was done. The temporomandibular joint luxation was also corrected.

Pediatric internal derangements of the temporomandibular joint: effect on facial development.

To evaluate the relationship between internal derangement(s) of the temporomandibular joint(s) (TMJ) and disturbed facial skeleton growth (dysmorphogenesis), 128 consecutive children (103 girls, 25 boys), who were 14 years of age or younger and had undergone combined radiographic and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging studies of both TMJs, were retrospectively analyzed. Imaging studies had been performed to investigate suspected TMJ derangement because of symptoms that included, either individually or in various combinations, pain, mechanical TMJ dysfunction, and facial skeleton abnormalities, su

Population-based study of facial morphology and excessive daytime somnolence.

Studies in patients seeking attention for nasal obstruction or pharyngeal disorders suggest that craniofacial abnormalities correlate with obstructive sleep apnea, but there is little information on the relevance of this association in the population at large. We aimed to determine whether characteristics of facial morphology correlate with excessive daytime somnolence (EDS) in a population-based, door-to-door survey. Residents of a village in rural Ecuador were screened with the Epworth sleepiness scale to assess EDS and underwent physical examination with attention to nasal septum deflection

De novo 10q22 interstitial deletion.

We describe a 4 month old male with a de novo interstitial deletion of chromosome 10q22. His clinical features included growth deficiency, developmental delay, ocular hypertelorism, posteriorly rotated ears, retrognathia, and fifth finger clinodactyly. He later developed dental lamina cysts of the alveolar ridge. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of an interstitial deletion of 10q22.

CHARGE syndrome: review of literature and report of case. Coloboma, heart disease, atresia of choanae, retarded mental development, genital hypoplasia, ear abnormalities-deafness.

Because of the medical characteristics of this inheritable disorder, the treatment of these patients can be fraught with potential pitfalls. Oral manifestations can include taurodontism of the pulp chambers, retrognathia, palatal constriction with attendant posterior crossbite, frontal tongue posturing, and mouth breathing relating to airway restriction from choanal atresia. The authors describe their treatment of a patient three years of age with a tracheostomy.

An unusual distal arthrogryposis.

We report on a mother and her dizygotic twin fetuses who were affected with distal arthrogryposis. In addition the mother has cervical vertebral anomalies, scoliosis, short stature, nuchal and axillary pterygia, and unusual facial appearance. The fetuses had a short neck, pterygium colli, retrognathia, and mild apparent scoliosis. We think that these three individuals have a previously undescribed type of distal arthrogryposis.

Computer simulation of curvilinear mandibular distraction: accuracy and predictability.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to retrospectively evaluate the accuracy and reliability of a computer simulation system that predicts the results of an internal curvilinear mandibular distractor in the treatment of hemifacial microsomia and severe mandibular retrognathia. METHODS: A two-dimensional computer analysis and simulation system was developed based on cephalometric radiographs and patient photographs. The software was used to generate and superimpose digital templates, corresponding to the actual distractor and logarithmic spiral, onto the lateral cephalometric tracings. T

Treatment of hypoglossia-hypodactyly syndrome without extremeity anomalies.

Three cases of hypoglossia-hypodactyly syndrome without limb deformities are reported. All exhibited different degrees of tongue hypoplasia, micrognathia, retrognathia with a very narrow space between the left and right halves of the mandible, constricted isthmus, and only one lower incisor. Bone lengthening for the midline mandibular hypoplasia and orthodontic treatment were performed in the three cases with satisfactory results.

Complications after mandibular sagittal split osteotomy.

Sagittal split osteotomy has been performed routinely for correction of mandibular prognathism, retrognathia, mild open bite, and asymmetry. Intraoperative and early or late postoperative complications were evaluated in 258 patients operated on by this technique. With meticulous performance of the operation and long-term maxillomandibular fixation, complications can be negligible, and relapse, the most problematic postoperative issue, can be significantly reduced.

Systemic and maxillofacial characteristics of 11 Japanese children with Russell-Silver syndrome.

Russell-Silver syndrome (RSS) is a congenital anomaly characterized by intrauterine and postnatal growth retardation, typical facial features, fifth-finger clinodactyly, and skeletal asymmetry. Although data on intrauterine and postnatal growth retardation have been reported, there are few reports concerning the typical maxillofacial morphology in individuals with RSS. The aim of this study was to describe the details of this systemic condition and to characterize maxillofacial morphology based on cephalograms in 11 Japanese patients (age range, 3.9-12.0 years) with RSS. All 11 individuals had

Prenatal diagnosis of Pierre Robin Sequence: accuracy and ability to predict phenotype and functional severity.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the outcome of fetuses who had sonographic features suggestive of Pierre Robin Sequence (PRS). METHOD: All prenatal ultrasounds that mentioned 'posterior cleft palate', or 'micro or retrognathia' or 'PRS' over 13 and 20 years, respectively, at two obstetrical centers were reviewed. Medical records for children with isolated PRS monitored over 20 years at a PRS referral center for prenatal anomalies and the severity of neonatal feeding and respiratory functional disorders were utilized for comparison. RESULTS: From a prenatal ultrasound database of 166 000 cases, 157 had

Physical findings in the upper airways related to obstructive sleep apnea in men and women.

UNLABELLED: CONCLUSIONS, There are gender differences when it comes to the risk factors for sleep apnea. Large tonsils, a high tongue and a wide uvula are risk factors for sleep apnea in men, while large tonsils and a retrognathic mandible are risk factors in women. Upper airway abnormalities including mandibular retrognathia are, however, unable to predict sleep apnea among snorers being investigated for suspected sleep apnea. OBJECTIVES: To identify gender-specific risk factors for obstructive sleep apnea and the diagnostic performance from physical upper airway examinations among snoring m
