Surgical Treatment of a Retropharyngeal Abscess in a Japanese Black Cow.

A 17-month-old Japanese Black cow presented with inappetence, wheezing, dysphagia, and drooling. Radiography and ultrasonography revealed an oval, dorsal, pharyngeal mass, with an internal horizontal line demarcating the radiolucent area from the radio-opaque area. Upper airway endoscopy revealed pus-like deposits in the dorsal nasal passage, hyperemia, and edema in the dorsal pharynx, leading to swelling and airway obstruction. Manual palpation, after sedation, revealed a thickened mass surface, which was difficult to rupture with manual pressure. After inserting a linear sonographic probe th

Retropharyngeal abscess- An unusual complication in a COVID-19 patient.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has generated many challenges for physicians, including multiple long-term effects that are still being studied. We report a CASE of patient who developed a retropharyngeal abscess post-COVID19 infection. We report a CASE of a female who was diagnosed with COVID19 pneumonia and hospitalized for a week at an outside institute. Approximately 3 weeks post discharge she developed neck pain, dysphagia, voice change and odynophagia for which she went to an outside emergency department. A soft tissue neck CT was performed and was concerning for retroph

Retropharyngeal abscess and mediastinitis as an uncommon complication of varicella infection.

Varicella infection is one of the most common and contagious infection in children and could course with severe complications. We report the case of a 4-year-old patient derived to our hospital for suspicion of suppurative complication in the context of a varicella infection. A computerized tomographic scanning was performed, showing a large retropharyngeal abscess with mediastinitis. Complications of varicella are up to 2% of patients, but this is the first report of a retropharyngeal and mediastinal abscess in this context. In the face of clinical suspicion, early intervention is important t

Multiplanar CT and MRI of collections in the retropharyngeal space: is it an abscess?

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this article is to describe a practical imaging approach to evaluating collections in the retropharyngeal space. CONCLUSION: The differential diagnoses for fluid in the retropharyngeal space include both noninfectious and infectious processes. The multiplanar capabilities of CT and MRI are ideal for characterizing and delineating collections. In this pictorial essay, we describe the anatomy of the retropharyngeal space and offer a four-step approach to evaluating retropharyngeal collections on multiplanar imaging.

Tularaemia of middle ear with suppurative lymphadenopathy and retropharyngeal abscess.

OBJECTIVE: We report an extremely rare case of otitis media due to Francisella tularensis, complicated by multiple suppurative cervical lesions and a lasting conductive hearing loss. CASE REPORT: A young woman presented with otitis media, several neck swellings and a retropharyngeal swelling. Polymerase chain reaction testing of aspirated fluid and serology confirmed the diagnosis of tularaemia. Specific antibiotic therapy initiated six weeks after the onset of initial symptoms did not resolve the disease, and open surgical drainage was necessary. CONCLUSIONS: Otitis media unresponsive to co

Medical and surgical treatment of peritonsillar, retropharyngeal, and parapharyngeal abscesses.

Peritonsillar, retropharyngeal, and parapharyngeal abscesses are the most common deep cervical fascial space infections. Most develop secondary to an oropharyngeal or dental infection. Additional factors such as smoking and periodontal disease may also contribute to the formation of a peritonsillar abscess. The CT scan is used to confirm the presence of deep neck abscesses, but its accuracy has some limitations. Adequate drainage with accompanying antimicrobial therapy and hydration are the cornerstones of management. Catheter or needle drainage of these abscesses may provide an alternative to

Group A streptococcal septicemia with retropharyngeal abscess: a case report.

Group A streptococcal (GAS) septicemia is rare in occurrence but has a significant morbidity and mortality, whereas retropharyngeal abscess (RPA) is infrequent and it is most commonly found in children under the age of 6 years, with half of the cases occurring in children between 6 and 12 months old. This report concerns a case of GAS septicemia complicated with RPA. The patient, a five-year-old boy, was referred from a local medical department under the impression of meningitis. However, blood and throat cultures were both found to be positive for group A streptococci. Widening of the retroph

Adult retropharyngeal abscess: a case report and review of the literature.

The case of an 18-yr-old otherwise healthy adult with retropharyngeal abscess (RPA) presenting with sore throat and syncope is reported. The case illustrates that sore throat with symptoms out of proportion to oropharyngeal findings should prompt a search for pathology other than simple pharyngitis. A literature search for case reports of RPA in adults was done to derive characterizations about this disease. Adult RPA patients present with sore throat, dysphagia, neck pain and, less commonly, stridor. Adult RPA occurs as a complication of procedures or blunt trauma to the neck, or spread of in

[Retropharyngeal abscess: case study of 5 cases and literature review].

The purpose of this study was to perform correlation of 5 cases and literature review. The study involved both children and adults. The major cause of retropharyngeal abscess was fish bone foreign body. Dysphagia associated with pain, fever and torticollis were the most common symptoms. Retropharyngeal abscess mainly occurred in the oropharyngeal and hypopharyngeal regions. Imaging tests, in particular CT scan, allowed for accurate information in 3 cases. Aerodigestive tract obstruction was found in most of our patients. Only 4 patients underwent incision and drainage. All patients received me

Infectious arteritis of the internal carotid artery complicating retropharyngeal abscess.

INTRODUCTION: Retropharyngeal abscess is a well-known entity in children, but can also occur in adults. The two main vascular complications are vascular compression and pseudoaneurysm, while infectious arteritis of the internal carotid artery is exceptional. CASE REPORT: The authors describe a case of a retropharyngeal abscess in an adult woman complicated by infectious arteritis of the internal carotid artery. This rare complication was treated by endovascular occlusion of the internal carotid artery and incision and drainage of the abscess in combination with antibiotic and anticoagulant th

[Descending necrotizing mediastinitis secondary to retropharyngeal abscess--a case report].

A 69-year-old man complained of a sore throat, neck swelling, and disturbance of swallowing with dyspnea. He underwent tracheostomy and cervical drainage. The plain chest roentgenogram and CT scans suggested mediastinitis, so he was transferred to our hospital. Cultures revealed a mixed aerobic and anaerobic infection. On hospital day 2, the neck was explored and pus was found in the connective tissue. Despite drainage and intravenous panipenem with betamipron and clindamycin, he remained febrile and a mediastinal abscess was seen on repeat CT. On hospital day 10, reexploration of the mediasti

Retropharyngeal Blastomycosis Abscess Causing Osteomyelitis, Discitis, Cervical Deformity, and Cervical Epidural Abscess: A Case Report.

Blastomycosis infection is caused by the inhalation of the spores of the dimorphic Blastomyces sp.fungus. While more commonly a self-limited infection of the lungs, extrapulmonary manifestations arise from hematogenous or contiguous spread. Disseminated infection most often includes skin lesions and osteomyelitis; however, central nervous system (CNS) involvement is infrequently reported in the literature. Herein, we present a case of a retropharyngeal blastomycosis abscess leading to cervical spine osteonecrosis with retropulsion, deformity, and a spinal epidural abscess, and we discuss the r

Ear, Nose, Throat: Beyond Pharyngitis: Retropharyngeal Abscess, Peritonsillar Abscess, Epiglottitis, Bacterial Tracheitis, and Postoperative Tonsillectomy.

Ear, nose, and throat (ENT) emergencies presenting with a chief complaint of pharyngitis can be due to infection, trauma, or postprocedure complications. The entities described in this article include retropharyngeal abscess, peritonsillar abscess, epiglottitis, bacterial tracheitis, and post-tonsillectomy bleeding. This article provides the emergency physician with the tools needed to decipher between the mundane and the critical, variations in presentation, and their emergent management. All of them require early recognition for any airway compromise or obstruction in order to avoid serious

Retropharyngeal Abscess Secondary to Rare Posttraumatic Spondylodiscitis: An Unusual Presentation.

INTRODUCTION: Posttraumatic spondylodiscitis is an uncommon but serious complication of spinal trauma. It may lead to severe neurological impairment and systemic infection. Retropharyngeal abscess (RPA), typically associated with upper respiratory infections, is rarely reported as a complication of nontuberculous spondylodiscitis, especially in the context of cervical trauma. This rare association poses a dual threat: airway obstruction and spinal cord compression. Our work aimed to report a rare case of posttraumatic, nontuberculous cervical spondylodiscitis complicated by an RPA, leading to

Tuberculous retropharyngeal abscess with Pott disease and tuberculous abscess of the chest wall: A case report.

RATIONALE: Tuberculous retropharyngeal abscess is rare, but it can be fatal if not treated appropriately. It usually occurs secondary to tuberculosis of the cervical spine. Moreover, tuberculous abscess involving the chest wall is relatively rare in skeletal tuberculosis. Although the optimal treatment is controversial, most clinicians suggest a combination of sufficient antituberculous medication and complete resection to prevent recurrence and increase therapeutic efficacy. Herein, we present an unusual case of retropharyngeal abscess with cervical Pott disease and tuberculous abscess of the

An uncommon cause of retropharyngeal abscess in adults: Cervical pyogenic spondylodiscitis.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Retropharyngeal abscess (RPA) represents a rare and life-threatening condition, particularly uncommon in the adult population. The simultaneous occurrence of RPA, and cervical spondylodiscitis is an exceedingly infrequent situation. CASE PRESENTATION: we reported the case of a 67-year-old male who presented to our department with complaints of sore throat, restricted neck range of motion, as well as numbness and weakness in the right arm persisting for two weeks. Cervical computed tomography identified a retropharyngeal abscess measuring 15 cm in height around C3
