Injuries to the Rectus Femoris: A Review of Evaluation, Management, and Return to Sport.

Injuries to the rectus femoris (RF) are an infrequently reported injury and can range from mild muscle strains to full tears, including injuries to the proximal and distal tendons of the RF. Patients often present with anterior thigh pain sustained after kicking or sprinting and describe a sudden "pop" in their thigh. Magnetic resonance imaging is the preferred modality for diagnosing the location, type, and severity of pathology. To date, there is no current treatment algorithm developed for managing these injuries. Nonsurgical management consists of rest, stretching, anti-inflammatory medica

Self-Compassion and Willingness to Adhere to Return-to-Play Protocol Following Sport-Related Concussions.

CONTEXT: Athletes who do not follow proper concussion recovery protocols are likely to experience their symptoms for longer while putting themselves at risk of further health issues. It is, therefore, critical to identify the types of athletes who may be more or less likely to follow the guidance of medical professionals following concussions. In this research, we tested the hypothesis that athletes with higher levels of self-compassion would be more willing to follow concussion recovery protocols. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. METHODS: We collected data from 2 samples of combat sport athle

Return to sport and daily life activities after vertebral body tethering for AIS: analysis of the sport activity questionnaire.

PURPOSE: Vertebral body tethering (VBT) is an alternative to fusion for selected scoliosis patients. As VBT does not limit spine mobility, it has been propagated that this technique allows a quicker return to physical activity than fusion. However, no data are available to support this statement. Aim of this study was to quantify how much time patients required to resume preoperative activity level and to seek possible associations between return to physical activity and demographic, radiographic and surgical data. METHODS: One year postoperatively, the validated sport activity questionnaire

Does preoperative depression predict return to sport and exercise after degenerative spine surgery?

OBJECTIVE: Predicting postoperative return to sport (RTS)/return to exercise (RTE) is challenging, particularly given the unclear impact of preexisting mood conditions. In sport/exercise participants who underwent spine surgery, the authors sought to evaluate the relationship between preoperative depression and postoperative sport/exercise participation and establish a threshold depression score predictive of RTS/RTE. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study (2011-2022) was conducted of sport/exercise participants who underwent degenerative spine surgery. Moderate/severe depression was defined a

Fear, Anxiety, and Return to Sport After Cycling Crashes: A Survey of Cyclists.

After cycling crashes, orthopedic and neurologic complaints are often the focus of evaluation and management. However, the trauma sustained may not be limited to physical injury; psychological issues brought on by or comorbid with the crash also warrant treatment. In this original research, we evaluated the presence of fear or anxiety after cycling crashes and examined factors associated with this mechanism of injury through a survey. Post-crash fear or anxiety was associated with female gender, a history of depression, and greater crash severity. Few cyclists received treatment and most retur

Pediatric Post-Traumatic Headache and Implications for Return to Sport: A Narrative Review.

BACKGROUND: Headache attributed to mild traumatic injury of the head (aka: mild traumatic brain injury, mTBI), frequently abbreviated to Post-Traumatic Headache (PTH), is one of the most common and disabling symptoms after a head injury. PTH often phenotypes to migraine. Evidence for treating PTH in the pediatric population is limited. Widely accepted guidelines do not exist to aid the clinician and there are currently no placebo-controlled trials for the pharmacologic management of PTH in this age group. Recommendations for when to return a child or adolescent to sport if they develop and/or

Altered postural sway persists after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction and return to sport.

Postural sway is defined as the movement of a body's center of mass within the base of support to maintain postural equilibrium. Deficits in postural sway are present after ACL injury; however, current evidence linking it to future injury risk is unclear. The purpose of this study was to determine if postural sway deficits persist after ACL reconstruction (ACLR). The hypothesis tested was that after ACLR, patients who return to sport (RTS) would demonstrate differences in postural sway compared to control (CTRL) subjects. Fifty-six subjects with unilateral ACLR released to RTS, and 42 uninjure

Italian version of the anterior cruciate ligament-return to sport after injury scale (IT ACL-RSI): translation, cross-cultural adaptation, validation and ability to predict the return to sport at medium-term follow-up in a population of sport patients.

PURPOSE: The timing of psychological and physical recovery after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction represents an open issue in current orthopedic practice. Several tools have been developed to evaluate these factors, with the most recent being represented by the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) return to sport injury scale (ACL-RSI). The aims of this study were to provide a validated Italian translation of the ACL-RSI in a population of sport patients, and to identify a possible correlation of the ACL-RSI score with the return to sport (RTS) time and the level of sport participation in

Treatment and Return to Sport in Athletes With Scaphoid Fractures: A Narrative Review.

Scaphoid fractures are the most common fracture of the carpal bone and frequently occur in athletic populations due to acute trauma or repetitive wrist loading. Management of these injuries in athletes is challenging because of the need to balance reliable fracture healing with timely return to sport. This narrative review summarizes current literature regarding treatment strategies, healing outcomes, and return-to-sport timelines in athletes with scaphoid fractures. We conducted a literature search using PubMed, Scopus, and CINAHL between July 2025 and January 2026. A total of 862 records wer
