BACKGROUND: Current statistics show that 50% of heart transplantation recipients survive 10 years or more. Emphasis on cost containment has renewed interest in the employment status of these long-term survivors.
METHODS: We have identified 62 patients operated on at one United Kingdom center and evaluated their employment and clinical status by interview at 1, 5, and 12 years from surgery.
RESULTS: Employment pattern was good, with 69%, 69% (of 55 survivors), and 57% (of 35 survivors) of the group working at 1, 5, and 12 years, respectively. Blue-collar work status per se was not a deterrent

This prospective study identifies physical, behavioral, and psychosocial correlates of subsequent employment status in a sample of low back pain patients. The sample of 150 subjects was drawn from 2 populations of persons with chronic low back pain: 87 individuals who were receiving care at a university low back pain clinic, and 63 individuals who had applied for (but not yet received) Social Security compensation on the basis of low back pain. All subjects had worked at least 3 months prior to their latest unemployment period and were currently out of work. Initial assessment included a medic

Therapists specializing in the rehabilitation of persons with upper extremity disorders--hand therapists--have developed an evaluation procedure to determine if and when an injured worker has the physical capacity to safely return to work. The Return to Work Evaluation has five components: (1) physical evaluation, (2) subjective effects of injury interview, (3) biomechanical job analysis, (4) work stimulation, (5) reevaluation. The therapist designs a work simulation based on the identification of the critical physical demand characteristics of the patient's work. After documenting the patient

The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness of two individual-level psychotherapy interventions: (a) treatment as usual consisting of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and (b) work-focused CBT (W-CBT) that integrated work aspects early into the treatment. Both interventions were carried out by psychotherapists with employees on sick leave because of common mental disorders (depression, anxiety, or adjustment disorder). In a quasi-experimental design, 12-month follow-up data of 168 employees were collected. The CBT group consisted of 79 clients, the W-CBT group of 89. Outcome measur

OBJECTIVE: Clinicians require guidance to aid patients who are attempting to return to work (RTW) after concussion. This systematic review synthesizes the results of interventions to determine what types of interventions (ie, early education and intervention, psychological, rehabilitative, and interdisciplinary) are effective, what behavior change techniques (BCTs) are most frequently used, and which BCTs are most promising.
LITERATURE SURVEY: MEDLINE ALL, PsycINFO, and CINAHL databases were searched for literature published January 2000 to the end of December 2023.

BACKGROUND: People with cancer are 1.4 times more likely to be unemployed than people without a cancer diagnosis. Therefore, it is important to investigate whether programmes to enhance the return-to-work (RTW) process for people who have been diagnosed with cancer are effective. This is an update of a Cochrane review first published in 2011 and updated in 2015.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effectiveness of non-medical interventions aimed at enhancing return to work (RTW) in people with cancer compared to alternative programmes including usual care or no intervention.

BACKGROUND: People with coronary heart disease (CHD) often require prolonged absences from work to convalesce after acute disease events like myocardial infarctions (MI) or revascularisation procedures such as coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) or percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Reduced functional capacity and anxiety due to CHD may further delay or prevent return to work.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of person- and work-directed interventions aimed at enhancing return to work in patients with coronary heart disease compared to usual care or no intervention.

Heart transplantation patients generally demonstrate exercise capacities that are below the minimal standards for firefighting. Therefore, it is unlikely that heart transplantation patients will receive medical and/or employer clearance for active duty. We report a case of a firefighter who sought to return to full-time active duty following heart transplantation. We examined his physiological readiness to return to work during occupation-specific testing. Remarkably, the patient was able to meet the minimal requirements for full active firefighting. This finding provides direct evidence to su

BACKGROUND: Traumatic hip dislocations are associated with high morbidity and overall limitations of daily living activities. Residual disability inhibits returning to work after severe injuries and minimizes financial independence and social involvement, which are both related to well-being and good health. The aim of this study was to analyze epidemiological and socioeconomic status following traumatic hip dislocations to identify predictors for return to work.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients with traumatic hip dislocations from three level one trauma centers from 2009 to 2021 were followed

BACKGROUND: The number of survivors of head and neck cancer (HNC) has steadily increased due to major advances in cancer care. However, cancer survivors who experience job loss face different challenges regarding return to work (RTW). Relatively few studies have integrated the experience encountered by patients.
OBJECTIVE: This mixed-methods study aimed to explore the experience and challenges of RTW in patients with HNC.
METHODS: Data were collected with structured questionnaires (n = 120) and semi-structured face-to-face interviews (n = 12).
RESULTS: Relationships were found between patie
