A novel topical ingredient derived from seaweed significantly reduces symptoms of acne vulgaris: a general literature review.

Currently, benzoyl peroxide, antibiotics, and retinoids are the mainstay topical treatments for acne vulgaris. However, potential benefits may be offered by natural, marine-derived ingredients, such as those derived from brown seaweed (Laminaria digitata). This article will review the available literature on two ingredients; "seaweed oligosaccharides," which are those derived from the polysaccharide membrane of Laminaria digitata, and a novel seaweed oligosaccharide-zinc complex (SOZC) (Phycosaccharide AC, The Mentholatum Company, East Kilbride, UK). Findings from a recent double-blind, placeb

Annular Lichen Planus of the Penis Successfully Treated with Topical Tacrolimus 0.1% Ointment: A Case Report and Systematic Review of the Literature.

Introduction: Annular Lichen Planus (ALP) of the penis is a rare variant of genital lichen planus. Clinically, it is characterized by violaceous plaques with an annular configuration and central clearing. The diagnosis can be challenging, especially considering its rarity, and histopathological confirmation is often necessary to differentiate it from other annular dermatoses. Methods: We report a rare case of genital ALP in a male patient, while reviewing previously reported cases to provide a comprehensive overview of this rare condition. Results: A 63-year-old white male was referred to our

Topical 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA)-photodynamic therapy (PDT) for lichen sclerosus of face: case report and literature review.

Lichen sclerosus (LS) is a chronic inflammatory dermatosis typical of the genital region, with rare involvement of extragenital areas and particularly the face. LS therapeutic management is challenging, and common therapies including topical and systemic corticosteroids, topical calcineurin inhibitors, surgery are often ineffective. Herein, we present a case of LS occurred in a 36-year-old girl with facial involvement resistant to therapy with systemic corticosteroids and topical tacrolimus. Considering the involvement of a sensitive area, the young age of the patient, and the consistent clini

Systematic literature review of non-topical treatments for early, untreated (systemic therapy naïve) psoriatic disease: a GRAPPA initiative.

BACKGROUND: Psoriatic disease (PsD) is a complex systemic disorder with cutaneous and musculoskeletal manifestations. Current evidence on pharmacological interventions, effective across the spectrum of clinical manifestations of early, systemic treatment-naïve PsD, is limited. This review aims to appraise such evidence. METHODS: This systematic review examined seven patient-intervention-comparator-outcome research questions to address the efficacy of the interventions on the following: across the spectrum of clinical manifestations PsD activity; peripheral arthritis; dactylitis; spondylitis;

A multidisciplinary team model of caring for patients with perianal Crohn's disease incorporating a literature review, topical therapy and personal practice.

BACKGROUND: Crohn's disease (CD) is characterised by periods of relapse and remission. Over time the disease leads almost inevitably to the complications of stricturing, penetration and fistulisation. Perianal CD involves areas of chronic abscess formation, ulceration, skin tags or fistula formation. This can be a particularly challenging and complex problem to manage, and a range of potential treatment modalities exist. METHODS: This review covers the management of perianal CD and provides recommendations for practice for the multidisciplinary team (MDT), including the use of wound managemen

Successful Management of Refractory Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome With Topical Capsaicin: A Case Report With Proposed Mechanism of Action and Literature Review.

INTRODUCTION: Cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome (CHS) is a debilitating disorder of chronic, heavy cannabis users characterized by cyclic severe nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain that is classically relieved by hot baths. Standard antiemetics often fail, and dysregulation of endocannabinoid signaling with involvement of heat-sensitive TRPV1 channels has been proposed. Topical capsaicin - a TRPV1 agonist - has been reported in small series and case reports to reproduce the hot-water effect and rapidly relieve symptoms. CASE PRESENTATION: A 28-year-old man with daily high-potency cannabis use

Post-traumatic stress symptoms in children and adolescents with chronic pain: A topical review of the literature and a proposed framework for future research.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The co-occurrence of chronic pain and post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has gained increasing research attention. Studies on associations among pain and PTSS or PTSD in youth have largely been conducted in the context of acute injury or trauma. Less is known about the risk for co-occurrence with paediatric chronic pain. In this review, we (1) propose a conceptual framework to outline factors salient during childhood that may be associated with symptom severity, co-occurrence and mutual maintenance, (2) present relevant lit

A case of Hailey-Hailey disease accompanied by Cushing's syndrome and adrenal insufficiency due to long-term usage of topical steroids with review of literature.

Hailey-Hailey disease (HHD), or familial benign chronic pemphigus, is a rare autosomal dominant disorder characterized by recurrent vesicles and erosions in intertriginous areas. Topical corticosteroids are the primary treatment, but their potential systemic side effects are often overlooked. Prolonged use on compromised skin can lead to excessive absorption, increasing the risk of iatrogenic Cushing's syndrome and adrenal insufficiency. Here, we report the case of a 50-year-old woman with HHD who had been using topical clobetasol or betamethasone for over 10 years, reaching doses up to 50 g/d
