Epithelioid rhabdomyosarcoma: clinicopathologic analysis of 16 cases of a morphologically distinct variant of rhabdomyosarcoma.

Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS), which affects mainly pediatric patients, is currently classified into 3 major categories: embryonal, alveolar, and pleomorphic. We have identified a distinct variant of RMS that is characterized by epithelioid morphology, reminiscent of poorly differentiated carcinoma or melanoma, for which we propose the designation "epithelioid RMS." We examined the clinicopathologic features of 16 such cases, which were received in consultation between 1991 and 2009. Ten patients were men, and 5 were women (gender was unknown in 1 case), with a median age of 70.5 years (range 14 to 7

Dendriplexes in alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma therapy.

Alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma (ARMS) is an aggressive pediatric soft tissue sarcoma most commonly driven by the PAX3-FOXO1 fusion oncogene and associated with poor outcomes despite intensive multimodal therapy. Targeted molecular strategies capable of complementing standard treatment remain limited. Here, we evaluated partially glycosylated fourth-generation poly(propylene imine) dendrimers (PPI-G4) as delivery systems for PAX3-FOXO1-specific siRNA. All tested glycodendrimers formed stable dendriplexes; however, dendrimers with the lowest degree of surface modification, PPI-M3-20 and PPI-Lac-27, s

Non-rhabdomyosarcoma Soft Tissue Sarcoma.

Non-rhabdomyosarcoma soft tissue sarcomas (NRSTS) is a diverse group of soft tissue sarcomas with a wide range of behavior, presentation, and response to treatment. As most NRSTS are not responsive to chemotherapy, surgery remains the cornerstone of treatment and excellent outcomes for low-risk tumors can be achieved with surgery alone. The prognosis for high-risk, metastatic, or advanced tumors remains poor despite aggressive multi-modal treatment and new treatment modalities are needed. Studying NRSTS as a combined classification in cooperative group trials has been successful in identifying

[Clinical analysis of testicular rhabdomyosarcoma].

Testicular rhabdomyosarcoma is relatively rare in testicular tumors, but the age of patient is relatively young and the degree of malignancy is high. Therefore, this article introduces 4 cases of testicular rhabdomyosarcoma who were admitted to Peking University Third Hospital from May 1994 to February 2019, and reviews the literature to improve the diagnosis and treatment of this disease. The average age of the 4 patients was 17.5 years (14-21 years), the average hospital stay was 22.0 d (17-31 d), and the average body mass index was 19.6 kg/m2 (14.7-25.8 kg/m2). All the patients underwent ro

Rhabdomyosarcoma from uterus to heart.

Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is a malignant soft tissue tumor of the pediatric population which is  rarely seen in adults. Metastatic rhabdomyosarcoma is even rarer. We present an unusual case of a 49 year old female presenting with palpitations and uterine bleeding. An Echo-cardiogram revealed a large oval mass on the posterior mitral leaflet and a Computerized Tomography (CT) scan of the abdomen revealed a uterine growth. Surgical excision of the cardiac mass was done and histological analysis of cardiac lesion confirmed it to be rhabdomyosarcoma with a primary source in the uterus. The patient b

Dedifferentiated Liposarcoma Masquerading as Rhabdomyosarcoma.

We present a rare case of retroperitoneal dedifferentiated liposarcoma (DDLPS) masquerading as rhabdomyosarcoma. The patient was a 74-year-old man, complaining a loss of appetite. Abdominal computed tomography revealed a retroperitoneal mass, 10 cm in diameter, between the liver and the right adrenal gland. The tumor was resected and histologically diagnosed as conventional DDLPS, in which dedifferentiated component was highly cellular and composed of pleomorphic anaplastic cells. After 3 years, the tumor recurred in the right retroperitoneal space. The recurrent tumor consisted of 2 component

Congenital embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma; multiple lesions.

INTRODUCTION: Congenital or neonatal rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is a rare soft tissue tumor with the most common sites of origin in genitourinary tract, head, and neck regions and extremities are less commonly involved. PRESENTATION OF CASE: In this paper, a case of embryonal RMS with skin lesions, lymph nodes metastasis, and bone marrow metastasis is reported for a 1-month old female patient. DISCUSSION: This study presents how within 8-months of chemotherapy, the lesions got subsided and the patient became disease free. CONCLUSION: Multiple congenital rhabdomyosarcoma of neonate is a rare fin

Orbital rhabdomyosarcoma: a case series.

Orbital rhabdomyosarcoma is the most common orbital malignancy of childhood with the common presentation of rapidly evolving unilateral proptosis. We studied six patients who were diagnosed and treated for rhabdomyosarcoma between January 1999 and June 2004. The age of the patients ranged from 4 to 29 years. Four patients presented with acute onset proptosis associated with signs of inflammation, mimicking orbital cellulitis. One patient presented with lid mass. Another patient presented with a soft, blind eye that was pushed superotemporally by a large inflammed, vascularised mass. Embryonal

Spindle cell rhabdomyosarcoma in adults.

The spindle cell variant of rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is uncommon and is most often encountered in the paratesticular region of children in whom it has a good prognosis. Only isolated cases in adulthood have been described. Sixteen cases of spindle cell RMS occurring in adults were retrieved from our files. Eleven patients were male and 5 were female. Patient age ranged from 18 to 79 years (median, 32 years). Tumor size varied from 1.5 to 35 cm (median, 6 cm). The head and neck region, including the oral cavity, parotid gland, nasopharynx, and nasal cavity, was the commonest affected area, accoun

Ultrasound diagnosis of paratesticular rhabdomyosarcoma.

Rhabdomyosarcoma is the most common tumour of the lower genitourinary tract in children in the first two decades. Paratesticular rhabdomyosarcoma is associated with a significantly better outcome than lesions elsewhere in the genitourinary tract. Although ultrasound is considered the imaging modality of choice for evaluating intrascrotal pathology, the ultrasound appearance of paratesticular rhabdomyosarcoma has rarely been reported and may be confused with other disease entities such as epididymitis, adenomatoid tumour and leiomyoma. We present the ultrasound features of a paratesticular rhab

[Paratesticular rhabdomyosarcoma. A case report].

The rhabdomyosarcomas are rare tumors of mesenchymal tIssue. Whose most frequent localisations are génito-urinary, and occur in the child and young adult. It's an intrascrotal tumour, localised in the tunica vaginalis, epididymis or spermatic cord. The Authors report a case of paratesticular rhabdomyosarcoma in a 15 Year old child, who presented a right painless scrotal mass since two Months. The research of the tumoral markers is negative. Scrotal ultrasound shows a tissular mass in spermatic cord. Abdominal ultrasound and CT show retroperitoneal lymph node mass. Chest X-ray is normal. The in

Rhabdomyosarcoma in Karachi 1998-2002.

The epidemiological features of rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS), an uncommon malignancy composed of cells with histopathologic features of striated muscle, were studied in Pakistan. Incident RMS cases recorded at the Karachi Cancer Registry during 1998 to 2004 were reviewed and to ensure maximum completeness of data, only those registered between 1998 and 2002 were considered for the present study. Two hundred and seventeen cases were reported to the Karachi Cancer Registry during this five-year period. One hundred and forty eight of the patients (60.4% males; 39.6% females) were residents of Karachi.

Orbital rhabdomyosarcoma in Noonan syndrome.

The incidence of various benign and malignant tumors is increased in patients with Noonan syndrome compared with the general population. We present a 9-year-old boy with the typical features of Noonan syndrome and an acute nonaxial proptosis of the right eye. An ultrasound scan, a computed tomography scan, and magnetic resonance imaging raised suspicion of rhabdomyosarcoma. Biopsy confirmed the diagnosis. The tumor was consequently treated with combined chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Rhabdomyosarcoma is a rare but important differential diagnosis of tumor formation in children with Noonan synd

Cat-scratch disease mimicking rhabdomyosarcoma.

A 12-year-old boy who had injured his elbow presented with a lump in the epitrochlear area. Originally thought to be a hematoma, then later myositis ossificans, this mass was actually a lymph node with large, reactive germinal centers. Although stains for acid-fast bacilli, fungal organisms, bacteria, and cat-scratch disease were negative, serological testing for detection of Rochalimaea henselae organisms found evidence of cat-scratch disease. We would like to remind orthopaedic surgeons to consider this diagnosis in evaluating masses of the soft tissues of the extremities.

Exfoliative cytopathology of alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma.

Exfoliative cytopathology of alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma is presented. A 34-year-old male was found to have alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma of the retroperitoneum at autopsy. Ascites was recognized in the course of this disease. Cytological features in the ascites were characterized by relatively small-sized ovoid cells observed singly or in loose clusters. The neoplastic cells possessed small amount of rather vesicular cytoplasm and an eccentric nucleus. The nucleus characteristically revealed multiple deep indentations in the nuclear membrane, a few prominent eosinophilic nucleoli and finely granula

[Two cases of paratesticular rhabdomyosarcoma].

Two cases of paratesticular rhabdomyosarcoma are reported. A 15-year-old boy was admitted in July, 1983, with a 3-week history of gradually increasing painless scrotal swelling on the right side. With the suspicion of testicular cancer, right radical orchiectomy was performed and pathological examination revealed an embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of the paratesticular region. Chemotherapy and retroperitoneal lymphadenectomy were performed, and the latter revealed lymph node metastasis at the bifurcation of the aorta. Radiotherapy was not done because of adherent ileus. About 8 months after the orc

Embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of spermatic cord.

This article discusses 2 patients with embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of the spermatic cord and presents a survey of the literature and therapeutic methods. In recent years the prognosis of this malignant tumor has improved significantly by virtue of a combination of radical inguinal orchiectomy and retroperitoneal lymph node dissection with supplementary chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy.
