Colonic adenocarcinoma as a secondary malignancy after treatment of embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma.

BACKGROUND: Survivors of childhood malignancies are known to be at an increased risk for developing a variety of secondary cancers. Primary adenocarcinoma of the colon is very rare in children and adenocarcinoma of the colon occurring as a secondary malignancy in children is much rarer. METHODS: A boy with a history of successfully treated embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma developed adenocarcinoma of the colon as a secondary cancer. RESULTS: The boy presented with a solid mass of the left cheek at 3 years of age. The mass was excised and histological examination showed embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma. H

[Sarcoma botryoides (embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma) as an unusual diagnosis of cervix polyps].

Embryonal rhabdomyosarcomas of the female genital tract usually occur during infancy in the vagina. Only in rare cases can they be found in the cervix, where they are most commonly seen in adolescence. Their prognosis seems to be good since the introduction of a combination of surgery and chemotherapy. We report a case of cervical embryonal rhabdomysarcoma in IRS stage Ia in a 32-year-old female. After surgical resection and chemotherapy there has been no evidence of disease for 7 months. The case is compared with the published literature and prognostically relevant features, and possible prob

Hepatic undifferentiated (embryonal) sarcoma and rhabdomyosarcoma in children. Results of therapy.

From July 1972 through September 1984, 8 of 44 children diagnosed as having primary malignant hepatic tumors, who were treated at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, had undifferentiated (embryonal) sarcoma (five patients) or rhabdomyosarcoma (three patients). The natural history and response to multimodal therapy of these rare tumors are described. The pathologic material was reviewed and evidence for the differentiating potential of undifferentiated (embryonal) sarcoma is presented. At diagnosis, disease was restricted to the right lobe of the liver in three patients, was bilobar in four

Results of the JRS-I LRA0401 and LRB0402 Japan Rhabdomyosarcoma Study Group trials for low-risk embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma.

BACKGROUND: Failure-free survival (FFS) rates of low-risk patients with rhabdomyosarcoma improved in Intergroup Rhabdomyosarcoma Study IV after the escalation of cyclophosphamide total dose to 26.4 g/m2. However, this dose may increase the risk of adverse events, including infertility, in some patients. The JRS-I LRA0401 and LRB0402 protocols aimed to reduce the cyclophosphamide dose to 9.6 g/m2 and 17.6 g/m2, respectively, without decreasing the FFS rates. METHODS: Subgroup-A patients received eight cycles (24 weeks) of vincristine, actinomycin D, and 1.2 g/m2/cycle cyclophosphamide. Subgrou

Primary Embryonal Rhabdomyosarcoma of the Breast: A Case Report and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is the most common soft-tissue sarcoma in children and adolescents, but primary RMS of the breast is exceptionally rare and diagnostically challenging. Imaging findings are nonspecific and can mimic benign adolescent lesions (e.g., fibroadenoma), making timely histopathologic confirmation crucial. Immunohistochemistry for muscle markers - particularly desmin and myogenin - supports definitive diagnosis of embryonal RMS (ERMS). CASE PRESENTATION AND CASE DISCUSSION: A 14-year-old Arab female presented with a rapidly enlarging left-breast mass and ipsilateral

Cytomorphological Insights into Embryonal Rhabdomyosarcoma: A Rare Case in the Middle Ear.

INTRODUCTION: Rhabdomyosarcoma, though rare in the middle ear, necessitates prompt recognition for optimal management. They are malignant mesenchymal neoplasms arising from the embryonic mesenchymal cells of striated skeletal muscles. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a 5-year-old child with massive right mastoid swelling and bloody ear discharge. Cytological examination via fine needle aspiration biopsy revealed features suggestive of a malignant mesenchymal tumor, confirmed on imaging and subsequent histopathology as embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma (ERMS) FNCLCC grade 2. Small bowel metastasis from embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of the extremity- a case report.

Rhabdomyosarcoma is the most common soft tissue tumour in children and adolescents, but extremely rare in adults with comparatively worse outcomes. Metastatic disease is not uncommon, but intra-abdominal metastases are exceedingly rare. We report an unusual case of ileal metastases from an upper extremity rhabdomyosarcoma in a 17-year-old male who presented with abdominal pain during a routine follow-up visit. Laparotomy and ileocecectomy for a perforated ileal mass confirmed metastatic embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma with 1 out of 14 positive lymph node metastases. This case demonstrates that, alt

Embryonal Rhabdomyosarcoma Presenting as Lung Metastasis in an Adult: An Uncommon Presentation.

Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is one of the most common soft tissue sarcomas of adolescents and young adults. Histologically, rhabdomyosarcoma is classified into embryonal, alveolar, pleomorphic, and spindle cell/sclerosing rhabdomyosarcomas with further subcategorization. More than 50% of embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma occur within head and neck. The retroperitoneum and pelvis are less common sites of involvement. Embryonal rhabdomyosarcomas affect mainly, but not exclusively, children between birth and 15 years of age. Alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma tends to affect older patients. The usual metastatic sites

Successful Pregnancy after Intervention for Spindle-Cell Embryonal Rhabdomyosarcoma: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma, the most common soft tissue malignancy in childhood, is treated with surgery and chemotherapy. Because of the young age at the time of presentation, a discussion of future reproduction is appropriate and conservative management should be considered. We present a case of embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma that was successfully and conservatively managed with chemotherapy, allowing for future pregnancies. CASE: A 17-year-old nulliparous woman with embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma underwent 6 cycles of chemotherapy with adriamycin, dacarbazine, cyclophosphamide, and vin

Embryonal mastoid rhabdomyosarcoma in a three years old child: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Rhabdomyosarcoma is the most common malignant soft tissue tumor in the pediatric age, especially in the head and neck region; in the orbit and the nasopharynx. The middle ear is a very rare site for this neoplasm as it accounts for only 10 % of head neck rhabdomyosarcoma. PRESENTATION OF CASE: We report here the case of a three years-old child who was admitted to the emergency room for a left parotid and retro-auricular swelling with grade V facial palsy. The patient experienced chronic otorrhea with left facial palsy for two months. Two weeks later, a left parotid swelling appe

Embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of breast, pleura, and retroperitoneum diagnosed from pleural fluid cytology.

Embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma (ERMS) is a malignant small blue round cell tumor which is commonly seen in head and neck region. Breast and pleural involvement are uncommon. Rhabdomyosarcoma has been rarely reported in the body fluids like ascitic, pleural, and cerebrospinal fluid. In this article, we report an interesting case of ERMS which had deceptive small blue round cells in pleural fluid. The cytomorphological features along with a panel of immunocytochemical markers helped in arriving at the definite diagnosis. Later, biopsy from the breast lump and retroperitoneal mass also revealed the s

DICER1-Related Embryonal Rhabdomyosarcoma of the Uterine Corpus in a Prepubertal Girl.

BACKGROUND: Germline DICER1 mutations increase the risk of developing a wide variety of generally uncommon tumors. We describe a case of DICER1-related embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma (ERMS) of the uterine corpus in a prepubertal girl. CASE: A 10-year-old- girl with a history of cystic nephroma presented with a 3-week history of vaginal bleeding. A 3-cm mass filling the uterine cavity was detected, and histopathologic examination of hysteroscopy-guided biopsy samples revealed ERMS. Molecular genetic sequencing of the tumor sample revealed a DICER1 mutation. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION: This report hig

Botryoid-type of embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of renal pelvis in a young woman.

A 22-year-old woman presented with three weeks history of intermittent left loin pain, on radiological evaluation by U\S and MRI revealed left renal pelvic mass, ureterorenoscopy and biopsy taken, but couldn't reveal definitive diagnosis other than presence of a malignant process. Left nephroureterctomy was performed. Grossly there is a polypoid mass attached to the upper pole of the kidney by stalk. Light microscopic examination and immunohistochemical staining confirm a diagnosis of Botryoid-type of embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma. Treatment and follow up to 1 year is mentioned. Reviewing the lit

Teratoma in an adolescent with malignant transformation into embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma: case report.

BACKGROUND: The somatic type tumors are occasionally found in nonseminomatous germ cell tumors in men. These malignancies are presumed to arise from malignant transformation (MT) of teratoma or by differentiation of totipotential germ cell. OBSERVATION: A case of MT of germ cell tumor in 17-year-old male into embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma is described. The histopathologic diagnosis was that of embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma in which no germ cell elements were found. The germ cell origin of transformed histology is supported by cytogenetic analysis (isochromosome 12p), and elevated alpha(1)-fetoprote

Lactoferrin inhibits enterovirus 71 infection of human embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma cells in vitro.

Enterovirus 71 (EV71), the newest member of Enterovirudae, is notable for its etiological role in epidemics of severe neurological diseases in children. It appears to be emerging as an important virulent neurotropic enterovirus in the upcoming era of poliomyelitis eradication, whereas no effective vaccine or antiviral agents are available at this moment. Human and bovine lactoferrins, iron-binding proteins belonging to the nonimmune defense system, were assayed in vitro to assess their inhibiting capacity on the cytopathic effect of EV71 on human embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma (RD) cells. Costello syndrome: report of six patients including one with an embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma.

UNLABELLED: Costello syndrome was first described in 1971. Besides papillomata, which were part of the initial description, patients tends to develop benign tumours of ectodermal origin. Aetiology is yet unknown but it is supposed to be the result of a sporadic dominant mutation. We report six patients with typical clinical findings and emphasise the importance of cardiac manifestations and the tendency to develop tumours. One patient developed an embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma, the occurrence of which has been reported twice before in patients with Costello syndrome. CONCLUSION: There might be a
