In the veterinary field, there is a great concern about the issue of acaricides resistance in cattle ticks. A comparative study was designed to evaluate the in vitro acaricidal efficacy of imidacloprid nano-emulsion, zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs), silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs), deltamethrin, deltamethrin-ZnO NPs, and deltamethrin-Ag NPs. In addition, the novel formulations of deltamethrin (deltamethrin-ZnO NPs and deltamethrin-Ag NPs) against Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) annulatus were also evaluated by in vivo animal efficacy trials. Nanoparticles and their loaded forms, deltamethrin-Ag NPs

Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato (s.l.) ticks act as intermediate host for a range of canine vector-borne pathogens, including nematodes ranked in the genus Cercopithifilaria. Though being the object of several studies in the last years, information on the distribution of these parasites is still lacking. In this study, the occurrence of Cercopithifilaria spp. was investigated in on-host population of R. sanguineus s.l. collected from naturally infested dogs. Ticks (n=1906, including one larva, 294 nymphs and 1611 adults) were sampled on domestic dogs (n=155) living in the municipality of G

UNLABELLED: The brown dog tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato (Latreille, 1806), is an ectoparasite and disease vector of significant veterinary and public health importance that is distributed widely around the world. The intensive use of synthetic acaricides for tick control exerts a strong selective pressure for brown dog ticks to become resistant to them. Here, we investigated claims from the field regarding treatment failure associated with the use of veterinary products containing ivermectin (IVM) to control brown dog ticks infesting dogs in Yucatan state, Mexico. Dogs in six state

Babesia gibsoni was firstly identified in Rhipicephalus sanguineus ticks infested on dogs in Asia. A total of 1195 ticks collected from veterinary practitioners and pet clinics were examined for Babesia by nested-polymerase chain reaction assay based on the 18S small subunit ribosomal RNA (ssrRNA) gene. Babesia infection was detected in nymph, male and female ticks with an infection rate of 2.42%, 0.98% and 1.97%, respectively. Sequence and phylogenetic analysis revealed that these Babesia spp. were genetically affiliated to the same clades within the genospecies of B. gibsoni and B. vogeli, a

Nguni cattle are known to be more resistant to ticks than Bonsmara cattle, even if the immunological mechanisms responsible for this phenomenon are not fully understood. Cutaneous hypersensitivity responses to unfed larval extracts (ULE) of the ticks Rhipicephalus decoloratus and Rhipicephalus microplus were investigated in Nguni and Bonsmara cattle to improve knowledge on the immunity to ticks. Hypersensitivity reactions were induced by intradermal inoculation of 0.1ml of ULE of R. decoloratus and R. microplus ticks (50μg protein) in the right and left ear, respectively, of 8-9-month-old Ngun

Tick-borne viruses (TBVs) include the highly pathogenic viruses associated with infectious diseases in both humans and animals. The global public health concern of TBVs is closely related to geographic distribution of ticks. In Africa, a variety of TBVs have been reported by detections from ticks and high seroprevalence in humans and domestic animals. In this study, we aimed to detect TBVs from ticks in Kenya by targeting viral genes of Orthoflavivirus, Bandavirus and Orthonairovirus. Ticks were collected from cattle, camels, sheep and goats in Isiolo, Narok and Baringo counties, and viral RNA

Rhipicephalus microplus is an ectoparasite responsible for causing economic losses in livestock farming totalling approximately $3.24 billion dollars per year. The main control method involves the use of chemical acaricides. However, the incorrect and intensive use of these chemicals has led to an increasing number of reports of resistance to acaricides. Therefore, the objective of this study was to develop and evaluate a laser prototype with a voltage of 5 V and power of 1000 mW to reduce the development of R. microplus. The methodology evaluated did not result in a high mortality rate; there

Ticks and tick-borne pathogens (TBPs) have a significant economic impact on livestock. In Nepal, only limited information is available for the molecular identification of ticks and TBPs. This study aims to address this major challenge by providing data on the diversity of TBPs in Nepalese cattle, along with molecular sequences to facilitate accurate identification. A total of 145 cattle blood samples were collected from Pokhara (n = 70) and Madi (n = 75). The cattle were also examined for tick infestations, and the detected ticks were subjected to morphological identification, followed by mole

We conducted a study on different aspects of the biology and ecology of the recently described Rhipicephalus hibericus Millán, Rodríguez-Pastor and Estrada-Peña (Ixodida: Ixodidae) in agricultural and riparian habitats of its type locality (Zaragoza, north-east Spain), with a focus on seasonal dynamics of questing individuals and the identification of the main hosts (both through live-trapping and molecular blood meal analysis in questing adults). We further evaluated the effect of potential wildlife hosts (micro and meso-mammals, and birds), habitat (agrarian and natural) and climate variable

Rhipicephalus microplus poses a substantial threat to livestock health and agricultural economies worldwide. Its remarkable adaptability to diverse environments and hosts is a testament to its extensive genetic diversity. This review delves into the genetic diversity of R. microplus, employing three pivotal genetic markers: the cytochrome c oxidase I (COX1) gene, ribosomal genes, and microsatellites. The COX1 gene, a crucial tool for genetic characterization and phylogenetic clustering, provides insights into the adaptability of ticks. Ribosomal genes, such as internal transcribed spacer regio

The livestock sector contributes almost 11% of Pakistan's GDP and is crucial to 35 million people's livelihoods. Ticks are a major economic threat, as over 80% of livestock, such as bovines, are tick-infested with Hyalomma and Rhipicephalus tick species. Hyalomma anatolicum and Rhipicephalus microplus are the most common tick species collected from livestock, transmitting primarily anaplasmosis, babesiosis, and theileriosis. We aimed to identify the geographical distribution of these two tick species and hot spot areas where the risk of these diseases being transmitted by these ticks is high.

The aim of this study was evaluating the association and correlation between the diagnostics tests used for Leishmania spp. detection in dogs and ticks. We evaluated 99 dogs and 990 Rhipicephalus sanguineus. In dogs, we used bone marrow aspirates and lymph node fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) for direct parasitological examinations and real time-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and collected blood samples for enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA). In ticks, two laboratory techniques [immunohistochemistry to lipophosphoglycan (IHC) and RT-PCR] were performed in the intestine, ovarie

Rhipicephalus microplus is the main blooding-sucking ectoparasite of bovines and is regarded as important vectors of animal diseases such as Babesiosis. Mining protective antigens of R. microplus to develop antitick vaccine is the most potential tick control strategy. In this study, the specific primers were designed according to the conserved nucleotide sequence of enolase gene in Haemaphysalis flava, Ixodes ricinus, and Ornithodoros moubata. The fragment of enolase gene was obtained by PCR using cDNA template from fully engorged female R. microplus. The full-length cDNA of enolase gene was a

Adults of the Brown Ear Tick (Rhipicephalus appendiculatus) have a predilection for feeding inside and around the ears of cattle and other hosts. A previous study has shown that the tick locates the host ears by 'push-pull' deployment of a repellent blend emitted at the anal region and an attractant blend emitted at the ears. Interestingly, the two odours play reverse roles with Rhipicephalus evertsi, which prefer to feed around the anal region. The present study was undertaken to characterize the major constituents of the cattle anal odour and to evaluate their repellence to R. appendiculatus

Our research aimed to test the effects of Melaleuca alternifolia oil (pure and in nanocapsules) in the control of Rhipicephalus microplus in dairy cattle. For this purpose, the in vivo studies used 15 cows distributed in three different groups with the same number of animals. Five cows remained untreated (Group A), representing the control group; other five cows were sprayed with TTO (at 5%) in its pure form (Group B); and five cows were sprayed with nanocapsules of TTO (at 0.75%) (Group C). On days 1 and 4 post-treatments (PT), all cows had their ticks counted. On day 1 PT, two ticks from eac

Ticks and the diseases they transmit cause great economic losses to livestock in tropical countries. Non-chemical control alternatives include the use of resistant cattle breeds, biological control and vaccines. However, the most widely used method is the application of different chemical classes of acaricides and macrocyclic lactones. Populations of the cattle tick, Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus, resistant to organophosphates (OP), synthetic pyrethroids (SP), amitraz and fipronil have been reported in Mexico. Macrocyclic lactones are the most sold antiparasitic drug in the Mexican veter
