Rhizopus microsporus as Causative Agent of Mucormycosis in COVID-19 Patient.

BACKGROUND: The pandemic of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) emerged as a fatal infection, especially in immunocompromised patients. Currently, this infection is managed with systemic corticosteroids. Co-infection of CO-VID-19 with opportunistic fungi is increasingly recognized. METHODS: We describe a case of rhino-cerebral mucormycosis 12 days following severe COVID-19 in a diabetic patient. RESULTS: He received 50 mg amphotericin B and surgical debridement. The patient's symptoms improved following medical and surgical intervention. CONCLUSIONS: Mucormycosis is an uncommon but serious infec

Case report of penile Rhizopus arrhizus infection in an unexpected patient.

There are few reports of penile mucormycosis and even fewer in the absence of overt immune suppression. An eighty year old male with diabetes presents with penile mass. The pathology and culture demonstrated Rhizopus arrhizus. He was treated with surgery and liposomal amphotericin B. His therapy was stopped after pathology demonstrated clear surgical margins. His good outcome provides evidence that stopping antifungal therapy after achieving clear surgical margins is acceptable in patients without ongoing immunosuppression.

Rhizopus arrhizus and Fusarium solani Concomitant Infection in an Immunocompromised Host.

Neutropenic patients are at risk of the development of hyalohyphomycosis and mucormycosis. Correct identification is essential for the initiation of the specific treatment, but concomitant mold infections are rarely reported. We report one unprecedented case of concomitant mucormycosis and fusariosis in a neutropenic patient with acute myeloid leukemia. The patient developed rhino-orbital infection by Rhizopus arrhizus and disseminated infection by Fusarium solani. The first culture from a sinus biopsy grew Rhizopus, which was consistent with the histopathology report of mucormycosis. A second

An unusual ulcer: A case of cutaneous mucormycosis caused by Rhizopus oryzae.

Mucormycoses are high-mortality infections feared by clinicians worldwide. They predominantly affect immunocompromised hosts and are associated with a spectrum of disease. We describe a case of cutaneous mucormycosis caused by Rhizopus oryzae in a patient with multiple risk factors cured with complete surgical excision and a short course of antifungal therapy.

Chlamydospores of Rhizopus microsporus var. rhizopodiformis in tissue of pulmonary mucormycosis.

Hyphae are usually the only fungal elements found in tissue of mucormycosis, and other fungal elements are quite rarely encountered. We found chlamydospores in bronchial lumina in autopsied tissue of pulmonary mucormycosis of a diabetic patient. Chlamydospores are thick-walled, asexually produced spores arising from the modification of a hyphal segment. This is the first histologic demonstration of chlamydospores in mucormycosis in which the causative fungus is culturally identified to species level. Rhizopus microsporus var. rhizopodiformis was isolated from the present autopsied pulmonary ti

Inhibition of lipases from Chromobacterium viscosum and Rhizopus oryzae by tetrahydrolipstatin.

Tetrahydrolipstatin is known as an inhibitor for pancreatic lipase but not for microbial lipases. In this paper we demonstrate that in the presence of water-insoluble substrates like tributyrin or olive oil, tetrahydrolipstatin inhibits the lipases of Chromobacterium viscosum and Rhizopus oryzae, although with different potency. In contrast to porcine pancreatic lipase, which forms an irreversible and covalent enzyme-inhibitor complex with tetrahydrolipstatin, the inhibition of the microbial lipases is reversible as the inhibitor can be removed from the enzyme-inhibitor complex by solvent extr

Interstitial pneumonitis induced in guinea pigs by the antigens of Rhizopus nigricans.

Rhizopus nigricans (Rn) is one of the most common members of the Mucorales that produces opportunistic infections and hypersensitivity states. Data concerning experimental induction in guinea pigs of hypersensitivity pneumonitis with a glycoprotein antigen are presented. This antigen was obtained from the mycelial and metabolic products of the cultures and was aerosolized during 12 weeks. The presence of specific antibodies (IgG and/or IgE) was detected by serological techniques; histopathological studies of the lungs showed interstitial infiltrates of macrophages and LTCD8+ cells, as revealed

Lineage-specific endosymbiosis in Mucorales: restriction of Mycetohabitans to the genus Rhizopus.

Endosymbiotic bacteria have been reported in mucoralean fungi, yet their taxonomic distribution, range of ecological niches, and host specificity remain incompletely understood. Clarifying the occurrence of these bacterial partners across clinical and environmental Mucorales is essential for understanding their evolutionary and biological significance. In this study, we screened 578 isolates of Mucorales from both clinical and fermented food sources, including 360 from mucormycosis patients in The Netherlands, 40 from COVID-19-associated mucormycosis (CAM) patients in India, and 178 foodborne

A case of mucormycosis caused by Rhizopus microsporus in a renal transplant patient.

A 54-year-old man who had been on the kidney donor register for 32 years received a kidney from a 9-year-old boy who had died of fulminant myocarditis. The post-operative course was poor, and hemodialysis was still needed after surgery. A kidney biopsy one hour after surgery showed a neutrophil-predominant inflammatory cell infiltrate localized to the peritubular capillaries (PTC) and acute tubular necrosis of the proximal tubule. Rhizopus species was detected in a perirenal white exudate taken 29 days postoperatively, and the transplanted kidney was removed on postoperative day 45. The remove

Nano-combination for Reviving the Activity of Fluconazole against Rhizopus delemar.

BACKGROUND: Rhizopus delemar, the main causative pathogen for the lethal mucormycosis and a severe threat during the COVID-19 pandemic, is resistant to most antifungals, including fluconazole, a known selective antifungal drug. On the other hand, antifungals are known to enhance fungal melanin synthesis. Rhizopus melanin plays an important role in fungal pathogenesis and in escaping the human defense mechanism, thus complicating the use of current antifungal drugs and fungal eradication. Because of drug resistance and the slow discovery of effective antifungals, sensitizing the activity of old

Systemic mucormycosis caused by Rhizopus microsporus in a captive bottlenose dolphin.

A 6-year-old female bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) kept in dolphinarium died after a 3.5-month period of lethargy and inappetence despite antibiotics and supportive care. At necropsy, gross findings included diffuse varying-sized nodules in the lungs and scattered nodules throughout the heart, spleen, mesenteric and hilar lymph node and kidney. Microscopically, the lesions were characterised by disseminated fungal pyogranulomas with numerous intralesional Mucor-like fungi. The fungi structures were demonstrated by Periodic acid-Schiff and Gomori methenamine silver stain. Molecular ana

Successful treatment of pulmonary mucormycosis caused by Rhizopus microsporus with posaconazole.

BACKGROUND: Mucormycosis is a rare fungal infection occurring chiefly in the lung or the rhino-orbital-cerebral compartment, particularly in patients with immunodeficiency or diabetes mellitus. Among Mucorales fungi, Rhizopus spp. are the most common cause of mucormycosis. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of pulmonary mucormycosis caused by Rhizopus microsporus in a young patient with diabetes but no other apparent risk factors. The diagnosis mainly relied on clinical manifestation, positive pulmonary tissue biopsy, and fungal culture. The patient was successfully treated with posaconazole

Effects of Photodynamic Inactivation on the Growth and Antifungal Susceptibility of Rhizopus oryzae.

Mucormycosis is an aggressive and high-mortality opportunistic fungal infection, especially in immunocompromised patients. Conventional antifungals or surgery showed a limited effect on this disease. The antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) has been proven to be a promising therapeutic choice against multiple pathogenic fungi. We evaluated the effect of aPDT by using methylene blue (MB) combined with a light emitting diode (LED) on the viability of Rhizopus oryzae, as well as the antifungal susceptibility after aPDT treatment in vitro. A total of six strains were included in this study; M

Allograft mucormycosis due to Rhizopus microsporus in a kidney transplant recipient.

Mucormycosis is an uncommon infectious complication with fatal outcome after kidney transplantation. We describe a rare form of mucormycosis in allograft kidney. The patient was a 54-year-old man who underwent deceased-donor transplantation. The patient experienced delayed graft function and new-onset diabetes within 1 week after transplantation. Four weeks after transplantation, he was readmitted because of allograft dysfunction without fever or pain. Ultrasonography showed enlarged allograft with normal blood flow. He was received broad antibiotics for 6 days, but allograft function was not

Rhizopus oryzae adheres to, is phagocytosed by, and damages endothelial cells in vitro.

Rhizopus oryzae is the most common cause of zygomycosis, a life-threatening infection that usually occurs in immunocompromised patients. A characteristic hallmark of zygomycosis is angioinvasion by the fungus, resulting in thrombosis and subsequent tissue necrosis. Interactions between R. oryzae and vascular endothelial cells are therefore likely of central importance to the organism's pathogenetic strategy. We studied the ability of R. oryzae to adhere to and damage human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) in vitro. We report that R. oryzae spores and germ tubes adhere to HUVECs, where

Gastric mucormycosis due to Rhizopus oryzae in a renal transplant recipient.

Gastric mucormycosis is a rare disease with a reported fatal outcome of 98%. Manifestations range from colonization of peptic ulcers to infiltrative disease with vascular invasion and dissemination. In our renal transplant patient a deep gastric ulceration infected with Rhizopus oryzae (class Zygomycetes), which is known to be an agent of mucormycosis, was diagnosed in the early posttransplant period after antirejection therapy. The infection was successfully managed with amphotericin B and omeprazole.

Bovine gastric mucormycosis caused by Rhizopus microsporus in Japanese Black calves.

Rhizopus microsporus is an opportunistic fungus that causes pneumonia and gastroenteritis in humans. This report describes two cases of mycotic gastritis caused by R. microsporus in Japanese Black calves. They exhibited diarrhea, wasting, and astasia. At necropsy, adhesion was observed between the abomasum and the abdominal wall (No. 1), and between the rumen and the spleen (No. 2). Histopathologically, severe necrosis with many mucoraceous fungi was observed in the abomasum (No. 1) and the rumen (No. 2), with fibrous granulation tissue forming in each adhered region. Molecular analysis identi
