Comprehensive testing and rapid dissemination of local drug supply surveillance data in Rhode Island.

BACKGROUND: The North American overdose crisis has continued at unprecedented rates with more than 100,000 overdose deaths estimated to have occurred in the United States in 2022. Regional variations in overdose rates signify differences in local drug supplies. State-level drug supply surveillance systems have been limited in their ability to document and communicate the rapidly changing drug supplies which can hinder harm reduction efforts at the community level. We sought to address by piloting a two-year, community-engaged local drug supply surveillance program in Rhode Island (RI). METHOD

Latent Tuberculosis Infection Treatment Outcomes in an At-Risk Underserved Population in Rhode Island.

OBJECTIVES: Within the United States (US), significant racial and ethnic disparities exist in the rates of latent TB infection (LTBI) and active TB disease. A disproportionate number of TB disease cases result from untreated LTBI among individuals born outside the US. This study evaluates LTBI treatment outcomes among an underserved, at-risk population in Rhode Island. METHODS: A quantitative retrospective chart review of adult patients with a positive screening test assessed LTBI care cascade outcomes including referral, treatment initiation, and completion. RESULTS: Seventy-four percent of

Serogroup B Meningococcal Disease Outbreak and Carriage Evaluation at a College - Rhode Island, 2015.

On February 2, 2015, the Rhode Island Department of Health was notified of a case of meningococcal disease in a male undergraduate student at Providence College. Three days later, a second case was reported in a male undergraduate with no contact with the first student, indicating an attack rate of 44 cases per 100,000 students, nearly 500 times higher than the national incidence of 0.15 cases per 100,000 among persons aged 17-22 years (Division of Bacterial Diseases, National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, CDC, unpublished data, 2013). Both cases were caused by a rare outbr

Characteristics associated with forced treatment discontinuation among people who use drugs in Rhode Island.

BACKGROUND: A barrier to remaining in substance use treatment in the U.S. is abstinence-based policies, which can lead to premature treatment termination. In this study, we examine factors associated with forced treatment discontinuation due to substance use among participants in the Rhode Island Prescription and Illicit Drug Study (RAPIDS). METHODS: We examined baseline data from RAPIDS participants (who enrolled between August 2020 and February 2023) and who reported any history of enrollment in substance use treatment programs. Modified Poisson regression was used to assess sociodemographi
