A snapshot of reproductive and sexual health and rights of women living with HIV in Asia.

OBJECTIVE: A brief review of status of sexual and reproductive health and rights of women living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in Asia with a focus on their access to related services. SUBJECT(S) AND METHODS: The content has primarily emerged from several meetings, workshops and research studies that regional networks of women living with HIV have conducted in the region. We used published and unpublished literature in English after the year 2000. RESULTS: We found many hindrances to realization of sexual and reproductive rights by HIV-positive women and their access to related hea

The human rights impact of gender stereotyping in the context of reproductive health care.

Gender stereotypes surrounding women's reproductive health impede women's access to essential reproductive healthcare and contribute to inequality more generally. Stereotyping in healthcare settings impedes women's access to contraceptive information, services, and induced abortion, and lead to involuntary interventions in the context of sterilization. Decisions by human rights monitoring bodies, such as the Inter-American Court of Human Rights' case, IV v. Bolivia, which was a case concerned with the involuntary sterilization of a woman during childbirth, highlight how stereotypes in the cont

Integrating women's human rights into global health research: an action framework.

This article uses Scale of Change theory as a framework to guide global health researchers to synergistically target women's health outcomes in the context of improving their right to freedom, equity, and equality of opportunities. We hypothesize that health researchers can do so through six action strategies. These strategies include (1) becoming fully informed of women's human rights directives to integrate them into research, (2) mainstreaming gender in the research, (3) using the expertise of grass roots women's organizations in the setting, (4) showcasing women's equity and equality in th

Sexual and reproductive health care for adolescents: legal rights and policy challenges.

Laws developed over the past half century have significantly improved adolescents' access to essential sexual and reproductive health care. These laws allow many adolescent minors to give their own consent, protect confidentiality, and provide financial support for the care. The consent requirements for adolescents to receive health care are contained primarily in state court decisions and in statutes known as "state minor consent laws," which are based on either the minor's status or the services sought. Confidentiality protections for adolescents' health information are contained in these mi

Prisoners who inject drugs: public health and human rights imperatives.

This article examines the human rights and public health implications of injection drug use in prisons with a specific focus on HIV and hepatitis C (HCV) viruses. The authors argue that prisoners who inject drugs have a right to access harm reduction measures--those that reduce the harmful consequences of drug use without necessarily reducing drug consumption. Moreover, states that fulfill their obligation to provide prisoners with harm reduction measures such as access to bleach, substitution therapy, and sterile injection equipment implement sound public health policy with a positive impact

Mental health status of human rights workers, Kosovo, June 2000.

Human rights workers in humanitarian relief settings may be exposed to traumatic events that put them at risk for psychiatric morbidity. We conducted a cross-sectional survey in June 2000 to study the prevalence of psychiatric morbidity among 70 expatriate and Kosovar Albanian staff collecting human nights data in Kosovo. Among those surveyed, elevated levels of anxiety, depression, and posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms were found in 17.1, 8.6, and 7.1% respectively. Multiple regression analysis revealed that human rights workers at risk for elevated anxiety symptoms were those who had wo

Brain and face: communicating signals of health in the left and right sides of the face.

In human communication and mate selection the appearance of health sends signals regarding biological fitness. We compared the appearance of health in the sides of the face to previous results on left-right facial asymmetry in the appearance of beauty (1). The stimuli were created by aligning the left and right sides of the face each with its own mirror image. Here, participants viewed 38 pairs of left-left and right-right faces and judged which member of the pair looked healthier. No significant interaction emerged between decision (health vs attractiveness) and face side. Rather, in women's

Balancing Public Health Priorities and individual rights in community tuberculosis control.

Tuberculosis (TB) remains one of the most persistent infectious diseases worldwide, particularly in resource-limited and densely populated regions. While community-based TB strategies are central to early detection, treatment success, and transmission interruption, their implementation often raises complex ethical and legal concerns. This paper examines the tension between public health imperatives and the protection of individual rights within community TB control programs. Determine a legal principles, human rights frameworks, and on-the-ground practice, we explore how interventions such as

Freedom and mental health: an overview of the impact of fundamental rights on psychological wellbeing.

Freedom, in its many forms, is a cornerstone of human rights. These include, among others, freedom of speech, freedom of thought, freedom of assembly, and freedom from discrimination. However, these freedoms are not only legal or political constructs but are also deeply embedded in the socio-cultural, religious, political, historical, and hence psychological composition of human beings. Rather than examining all of the many manifestations of freedom at once, this paper aims to explore the impact of a few specific freedoms-including freedom of speech, thought, assembly, movement, and protection

Displacement, health outcomes, and the human rights of people experiencing homelessness in the USA.

The USA is currently experiencing multiple overlapping economic and public health crises: rising costs of housing, increased homelessness, and record drug overdose mortality. In many urban areas, people who are homeless have become increasingly visible, often congregating in so-called encampments. The public reaction and policy response to this increased visibility has been largely punitive and carceral. Jurisdictions across the USA have adopted policies of forced displacement, often carried out by law enforcement officers and sanitation workers, and enforced via threat of fines, arrest, or bo

Right ventricular mechanical pattern in health and disease: beyond longitudinal shortening.

Right ventricular (RV) function has proven to be a prognostic factor in heart failure with reduced and preserved ejection fraction and in pulmonary hypertension. RV function is also a cornerstone in the management of novel clinical issues, such as mechanical circulatory support devices or grown-up congenital heart disease patients. Despite the notable amount of circumferentially oriented myofibers in the subepicardial layer of the RV myocardium, the non-longitudinal motion directions are often neglected in the everyday assessment of RV function by echocardiography. However, the complex RV cont

Providing information for young people in sexual health clinics: getting it right.

The need to improve the quality and availability of information on sexual health is identified as a key element in achieving the aims set out in the National Strategy for Sexual Health and HIV. Providing information about sexual health to young people poses particular challenges because of the sensitive nature of the issues and because of the difficulties that young people may face in sourcing information and asking questions of professionals.

Human rights, environmental justice, and the health of farm workers in South Africa.

Despite the democratization of South Africa in 1994, which brought the agricultural sector within the ambit of legal protection, farm workers remain vulnerable to an undue burden of social and health problems. Alcohol abuse due to the DOP system, pesticide poisonings, and other occupational hazards illustrate that the likely success of efforts at redress depends on a greater awareness of the rights and justice dimensions of the health problems facing these workers. International trade policies may exacerbate inequalities that deprive them of opportunities to realize their rights at national le

"Just clearly the right thing to do": perspectives of correctional services leaders on moving governance of health-care in custody.

PURPOSE: Governance models are a defining characteristic of health-care systems, yet little research is available about the governance of health-care delivered in correctional facilities. This study aims to explore the perspectives of correctional services leaders in British Columbia, Canada, on the motivations for transferring responsibility for health-care services in provincial correctional facilities to the Ministry of Health, as well as key lessons learned. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: Eight correctional services leaders participated in one-on-one interviews between September 2019 and Fe

Rationale, design and methods for the RIGHT Track Health Study: pathways from childhood self-regulation to cardiovascular risk in adolescence.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular risk factors during adolescence-including obesity, elevated lipids, altered glucose metabolism, hypertension, and elevated low-grade inflammation-is cause for serious concern and potentially impacts subsequent morbidity and mortality. Despite the importance of these cardiovascular risk factors, very little is known about their developmental origins in childhood. In addition, since adolescence is a time when individuals are navigating major life changes and gaining increasing autonomy from their parents or parental figures, it is a period when control over their own h

National guidelines for evaluating pain-Patients' legal right to prioritised health care at multidisciplinary pain clinics in Norway implemented 2009.

Background All nations are posed with the challenge of deciding how to allocate limited health care resources. A Patients' Rights Law from 1999 gives patients in Norway with a serious health condition, for which there is efficacious and cost-effective treatment, a legal right to receive health care from the National Health Care system. Methods Recently national guidelines have been produced for implementing these legal rights within 32 fields of specialist health care. One of these fields deals with serious chronic pain conditions. A task force established by the Directorate of Health, compris
