Preserving Tradition, Preventing Cancer: A Narrative Review of the Traditional Mexican Diet as a Framework for Cancer Risk Reduction.

The Traditional Mexican Diet (TMexD) is a culturally rooted, plant-forward dietary pattern derived from Mesoamerican agriculture and culinary practice, built on minimally processed staples-maize-based preparations, legumes, vegetables, fruits, and herbs. Characteristic techniques such as nixtamalization and fermentation alter starch structure, mineral availability, and gut microbial activity. Through these effects, the pattern shapes metabolic responses relevant to carcinogenesis. This narrative review clarifies defining features of the TMexD across Mexico's regional diversity and synthesizes

[Update on cardiovascular prevention 2025].

Despite an expensive healthcare system Germany performs poorly with respect to life-expectancy compared to other countries, for which cardiovascular diseases and deficits in cardiovascular prevention in particular are responsible. The basis of cardiovascular prevention is a healthy lifestyle with regular physical exercise, a predominantly plant-based diet, nonsmoking, good sleep and mental health. In many cases additional lipid-lowering, antidiabetic and antihypertensive medications are necessary. Recent studies have proven the prognostic effects of different groups of medications, such as pro

Assessment of the effectiveness of the gastropathy risk reduction program in patients with arterial hypertension.

OBJECTIVE: Introduction: For primary health care patients with concomitant morbidity are usual phenomena. Combination of gastropathy with arterial hypertension is increasingly being studied. However, the assessing of the medical and economic effectiveness of treatment of patients with concomitant morbidity still methodologically challenging. The issue aggravated by different cushion programs aimed to alleviate financial burden to indigent population. These cover non-expensive drugs with probable hazard to concomitant morbidity. The aim: to evaluate the effectiveness of the gastropathy risk red

Prevention of age-associated dementia.

The advancement of medical sciences during the last century has resulted in a considerable increase in life expectancy. As more people live to old age, one of the most fundamental questions of the 21st century is whether the number of individuals suffering from dementia will also continue to increase. Alzheimer's disease (AD) accounts for the majority of cases of dementia in the elderly, but there is currently no curative treatment available. Several strategies have been introduced for treatment, the most recent strategy of which was the immunization of patients using antibodies against Abeta,

9. Anaphylaxis.

Anaphylaxis is an acute-onset, potentially fatal systemic allergic reaction. It is usually triggered by an agent such as an insect sting, food, or medication, through a mechanism involving IgE and the high-affinity IgE receptor on mast cells or basophils. Less commonly, it is triggered through other immunologic mechanisms, or through nonimmunologic mechanisms. It often occurs in community settings. Anaphylaxis episodes range in severity from those that are mild and resolve spontaneously to those that are fatal within minutes. The clinical diagnosis is based on a meticulous history and physical

Return to exercise training after heat exhaustion.

CONTEXT: Exertional heat exhaustion (HEX) is the most common form of heat illness experienced by athletes, laborers, and military personnel. Both dehydration stemming from a water and/or salt deficiency and a high ambient temperature must exist for HEX to occur. In the field, appropriate therapy can reduce recovery time. OBJECTIVE: This manuscript provides clinical guidance regarding return to activity. The primary focus of this paper is to describe the evaluation of residual effects and the underlying personal characteristics that initially predispose the athlete to HEX. Attention to these f

Advances in Non-Pharmacological Interventions for Subjective Cognitive Decline: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Subjective cognitive decline (SCD) is considered the earliest symptomatic manifestation of preclinical Alzheimer's disease (AD). Currently, given the lack of effective and curable pharmacological treatments for AD, non-pharmacological interventions (NPIs) for individuals with SCD may provide a valuable opportunity for the secondary prevention of AD. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review and meta-analysis, conducted in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines, aimed to investigate the benefits of current NPIs in the population with SCD. METHODS: The online electronic databases, including

Mediating variables in a parent based intervention to reduce skin cancer risk in children.

The present study examined theoretical mediators of a parent-based intervention on sunbathing tendencies and sunburn frequencies based on the work of Turrisi et al. [Turrisi, R., Hillhouse, J., Heavin, S., Robinson, J., Adams, M., & Berry, J. (2004). Journal of Behavioral Medicine, 27, 393-412.]. Three hundred and forty parents in two regions of the United States were educated about the dangers of risky sun behavior and how to convey information about skin cancer prevention to their children. Attitudes toward sunbathing, health beliefs, appearance beliefs, and social normative beliefs were exa

A critical review and classification of dementia risk assessment tools to inform dementia risk reduction.

Addressing modifiable dementia risk factors requires reliable risk assessment methods. We aimed to synthesise knowledge on risk scores for all cause dementia, Alzheimer's disease (AD) and vascular dementia, classify them according to target population, evaluate their content, cost, appropriateness of validation studies, and suitability for implementing risk reduction guidelines. A systematic search was conducted of PubMed, Cochrane Collaboration, ProQuest, Scopus, Embase, and PsycINFO databases using a pre-registered protocol. Data on risk factors, target population, predictive validity, cost,

[Borderline personality disorder and non-suicidal self-injury: the role of mindfulness training in risk reduction].

INTRODUCTION: Due to patients diagnosed with borderline personality disorder (BPD) can engage risky behaviors, it is necessary to develop evidence based interventions in healthcare that can help to reduce the most pressing problems. BPD-specific cognitive therapy-based mindfulness training (MBCT) can be a solution to this challange. LITERATURE REVIEW: Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a significant predictor of subsequent suicide attempts and occurs in 80% of BPD patients. It is related to impulse- and emotion-dysregulation (cognitive-emotional model), as well as the deficit of mindfulness s

Aspirin Use Is Associated with a Reduced Incidence of Hepatocellular Carcinoma: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the third-leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide, with a growing incidence and poor prognosis. While some recent studies suggest an inverse association between aspirin use and reduced HCC incidence, other data are conflicting. To date, the precise magnitude of risk reduction-and whether there are dose-dependent and duration-dependent associations-remains unclear. To provide an updated and comprehensive assessment of the association between aspirin use and incident HCC risk, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of all observational studie

Measuring disaster-resilient communities: a case study of coastal communities in Indonesia.

Vulnerability reduction and resilience building of communities are central concepts in recent policy debates. Although there are fundamental linkages, and complementarities exist between the two concepts, recent policy and programming has focused more on the latter. It is assumed here that reducing underlying causes of vulnerabilities and their interactions with resilience elements is a prerequisite for obtaining resilience capabilities. An integrated approach, incorporating both the vulnerability and resilience considerations, has been taken while developing an index for measuring disaster-re

[Risk factors and risk reduction of breast cancer].

Because of its increasing incidence, breast cancer is a significant burden for women worldwide. In industrialized countries, breast cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women, and it is estimated that 1 in every 8 women will develop the disease during her lifetime. Sufficient evidence indicates that a number of genetic, environmental and lifestyle risk exposures during life may play important roles in the etiology of this disease. The purpose of this paper is to review some etiologic factors and underlying mechanisms in relation to breast cancer risk. Based on the

Combined Oral Contraceptives and Venous Thromboembolism: Review and Perspective to Mitigate the Risk.

Many factors must be considered and discussed with women when initiating a contraceptive method and the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) is one of them. In this review, we discuss the numerous strategies that have been implemented to reduce the thrombotic risk associated with combined oral contraceptives (COCs) from their arrival on the market until today. Evidences suggesting that COCs were associated with an increased risk of VTE appeared rapidly after their marketing. Identified as the main contributor of this risk, the dosage of the estrogen, i.e., ethinylestradiol (EE), was significan

Does integration matter? A holistic model for building community resilience in Pakistan.

This paper analyses an integrated communitybased risk reduction model adopted by the Pakistan Red Crescent. The paper analyses the model's constructs and definitions, and provides a conceptual framework and a set of practical recommendations for building community resilience. The study uses the process of outcome-based resilience index to assess the effectiveness of the approach. The results indicate that the integrated programming approach is an effective way to build community resilience as it offers a number of tangible and longlasting benefits, including effective and efficient service del

[Psychocardiology in inpatient rehabilitation].

Psychosocial risk factors contribute to the development and progression of cardiovascular diseases. They are associated with an unhealthy lifestyle, low patient adherence, alterations in autonomic function and endocrine markers. Thus, in cardiac rehabilitation, psychosocial risk factors should be assessed besides somatic factors. Patients with clinically significant symptoms ought to be referred for further psychological diagnostics. Depending on the findings, patients should be offered psychological interventions like relaxation training, stress management courses, smoking cessation programme

Treatment of hemorrhoids: A coloproctologist's view.

Hemorrhoids is recognized as one of the most common medical conditions in general population. It is clinically characterized by painless rectal bleeding during defecation with or without prolapsing anal tissue. Generally, hemorrhoids can be divided into two types: internal hemorrhoid and external hemorrhoid. External hemorrhoid usually requires no specific treatment unless it becomes acutely thrombosed or causes patients discomfort. Meanwhile, low-graded internal hemorrhoids can be effectively treated with medication and non-operative measures (such as rubber band ligation and injection sclero

Current therapeutic approaches to cardio-protection in hypertension.

Targeting a specific blood pressure based upon patient risk has been the approach to reducing cardiovascular risk in patients with hypertension. Drug selection was based upon compelling indications with titration and the addition of other agents as needed until the blood pressure target was achieved. However, new information has emerged describing improved methods for measuring blood pressure, a re-evaluation of blood pressure targets and additional therapeutic approaches that together may further reduce cardiovascular risk in patients with hypertension.
