Parent-child conflict and suicide rumination in college students: the mediating roles of depressive symptoms and anxiety sensitivity.

OBJECTIVE: Parent-child conflict, depressive symptoms, and anxiety sensitivity have each been identified as risk factors for suicide ideation in college students. This study examined the relations among these risk factors and suicide rumination utilizing transition theory to guide the hypothesized relations. PARTICIPANTS: Undergraduate college students participated in this study in the spring of 2012 (January to May). METHODS: Participants completed self-report measures of parent-child conflict, depressive symptoms, anxiety sensitivity, and suicide rumination, among other measures. Hypothesi

Role of otolith endorgans in the genesis of vestibular-visual conflict sickness (pitch) in the squirrel monkey (first report).

This experiment was designed to clarify each vestibular submodality's role in the genesis of vestibular-visual conflict sickness in pitch. We wanted to determine whether the ablation of the macula utriculi and macula sacculi, totally or separately, unilaterally and bilaterally, preserving the semicircular canals intact, could eliminate the conflict emesis in the squirrel monkey model. Observations were carried out over 5 months. In susceptible animals, the difference in conflict sickness scores between the pre- and the postutriculosacculectomy conditions was statistically significant. However,

Work-family conflict and burnout in night-shift nurses with children: the mediating roles of recovery experience and fatigue.

BACKGROUND: Burnout among nurses is a major global concern, particularly among those working night shifts, which can compromise the quality of nursing care, increase turnover intentions, and threaten the stability of the nursing workforce. Previous studies have shown that work-family conflict correlates positively with burnout in nurses, but not enough research has been performed on its relationship among night-shift nurses with children. In addition, the mechanism of this relationship is not completely clear. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the relationships among work-family conflict

Basal ganglia components have distinct computational roles in decision-making dynamics under conflict and uncertainty.

The basal ganglia (BG) play a key role in decision-making, preventing impulsive actions in some contexts while facilitating fast adaptations in others. The specific contributions of different BG structures to this nuanced behavior remain unclear, particularly under varying situations of noisy and conflicting information that necessitate ongoing adjustments in the balance between speed and accuracy. Theoretical accounts suggest that dynamic regulation of the amount of evidence required to commit to a decision (a dynamic "decision boundary") may be necessary to meet these competing demands. Thro

A Systematic Review of the Role of Magnetic Resonance Imaging in the Diagnosis and Detection of Neurovascular Conflict in Patients With Trigeminal Neuralgia.

Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is a debilitating disorder causing severe, episodic, unilateral stabbing facial pain disturbing enough to disrupt the activities of daily life. Classic TN is caused due to compression injury of the trigeminal nerve at the cistern segment caused by either an artery or a vein, referred to as neurovascular contact or conflict (NVC). Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been the standard tool for the diagnosis of NVC. This study aimed to determine the incidence of NVC in TN, as identified by MRI, assess the various MRI grading patterns among patients with TN, and identify

Functional Significance of Conflicting Age and Wealth Cross-Categorization: The Dominant Role of Categories That Violate Stereotypical Expectations.

The purpose of the current study was to identify the functional significance of conflicting stereotypes and to identify the dominant category in such conflicts. In the present research we examined the conflicting crossed categories of age and wealth with regard to warmth and competence perceptions. It was found (Pilot Study and Study 1) that the old-rich targets presented a conflicting stereotype group in the perception of warmth, whereas young-poor targets presented a conflicting stereotype group in the perception of competence. In addition, the old stereotype dominated the warmth evaluation

Accounting for the association of family conflict and heavy alcohol use among adolescent girls: the role of depressed mood.

OBJECTIVE: Heavy alcohol use increases dramatically at age 14, and there is emerging cross-sectional evidence that when girls experience family conflict at younger ages (11-13 years) the risk of alcohol use and misuse is high. This study evaluated the role of family conflict and subsequent depressed mood in predicting heavy alcohol use among adolescent girls. METHOD: This was a three-wave longitudinal study with annual assessments (modal ages 12, 13, and 14 years). The participants (N = 886, 57% female) were from 12 metropolitan schools in Victoria, Australia, and participants completed quest

On the function of placental corticotropin-releasing hormone: a role in maternal-fetal conflicts over blood glucose concentrations.

Throughout the second and third trimesters, the human placenta (and the placenta in other anthropoid primates) produces substantial quantities of corticotropin-releasing hormone (placental CRH), most of which is secreted into the maternal bloodstream. During pregnancy, CRH concentrations rise over 1000-fold. The advantages that led selection to favour placental CRH production and secretion are not yet fully understood. Placental CRH stimulates the production of maternal adrenocorticotropin hormone (ACTH) and cortisol, leading to substantial increases in maternal serum cortisol levels during th

A mediational model of the impact of marital conflict on adolescent adjustment in intact and divorced families: the role of disrupted parenting.

The present study was concerned with the development and testing of a structural equation model wherein the relation of interparental conflict to the adjustment problems of young adolescents is mediated through its impact on 3 aspects of parenting behavior: lax control, psychological control, and parental rejection/withdrawal. The model was tested separately on a sample of 46 young adolescents from intact families and a group of 51 adolescents from recently divorced families. The hypothesis that most of the relation between martial conflict and adolescent adjustment problems could be explained

EEG Signal Decomposition Evidence for a Role of Perceptual Processes during Conflict-related Behavioral Adjustments in Middle Frontal Regions.

Conflict monitoring processes are central to cope with fluctuating environmental demands. However, the efficacy of these processes depends on previous trial history/experience, which is reflected in the "congruency sequence effect" (CSE). Several theoretical accounts have been put forward to explain this effect. Some accounts stress the role of perceptual processes in the emergence of the CSE. As yet, it is elusive how these perceptual processes are implemented on a neural level. We examined this question using a newly developed moving dots flanker task. We combine decomposition methods of EEG

Exploring conflict-related behavioral intentions in AI and human role-playing interventions: evidence from behavioral experiments and linguistic analyses.

Interpersonal conflict often impairs decision-making and communication. This study examined whether AI-enabled role-playing (AI-RP) can regulate behavioral intentions in conflict situations and how it compares with the human counsellor-guided role-playing. Two experiments and a linguistic analysis (LIWC and BERTopic) were conducted. Participants were assigned to AI, the human counsellor, or no-interaction conditions. Behavioral intentions and interaction texts were analyzed. Both AI- and human-guided role-playing reduced revenge intentions and increased understanding compared with the control

Work and family conflicts and abnormal eating behaviors in occupational populations: The mediating role of Big Five personality traits.

BACKGROUND: Work-Family Conflict (WFC) and Family-Work Conflict (FWC) are prevalent psychosocial stressors among working populations, closely associated with mental and behavioral health outcomes. However, the ways in which these conflicts relate to abnormal eating behaviors (EBS) remain insufficiently understood. Personality traits may function as psychological resources that shape individuals' stress responses, offering a potential explanatory account. Guided by the Conservation of Resources (COR) theory, this study examined the associations between WFC, FWC, and EBS, and evaluated the indep

Cultural tightness and scientific capacity: A cross-national study of their synergistic and conflicting roles in COVID-19 pandemic outcomes.

Despite their advanced scientific capacity, many nations experienced high COVID-19 cases and deaths during the pre-vaccine phase of the pandemic. In contrast, some countries with tighter cultural norms, where social behaviour is more strongly regulated, appear to have controlled the spread of the virus more effectively. This creates a paradox: the same norm strength that may support compliance with public-health measures may also be less conducive to ideation, creativity, and scientific output. While prior research has associated cultural tightness with lower COVID-19 cases and deaths, its rel

[Lumbar disc herniation: Natural history, role of physical examination, timing of surgery, treatment options and conflicts of interests].

INTRODUCTION: Indication for surgery in lumbar disc herniation (LDH) varies widely depending on the geographical area. DEVELOPMENT: A literature review is presented on the natural history, role of physical examination, timing of surgery, evidence-based treatment, and conflicts of interests in LDH. Surgery is shown to provide significant faster relief of pain compared to conservative therapy, although the effect fades after a year. There is no treatment modality better than the rest in terms of pain control and neurological recovery, nor is there a surgical technique clearly superior to simple

Work scheduling through communication tools and job satisfaction: The roles of work-family conflict and perceived work pressure.

The expansion of digital communication has increasingly blurred the boundaries between work and personal life, making work scheduling through communication tools more common. In China, mobile platforms such as WeChat are widely used to facilitate work-related scheduling and coordination, allowing work instructions and messages to be communicated without being confined to fixed time periods. Using nationally representative data from the 2021 China General Social Survey (CGSS), this study examines the association between communication-tool-mediated work scheduling and employees' job satisfaction

Evidence for a causal role of superior frontal cortex theta oscillations during the processing of joint subliminal and conscious conflicts.

Consciously and subliminally processed information can both lead to conflicts that hinder goal-directed behaviour. Conflict monitoring processes are required to cope with situations where one or multiple conflicts occur. It has been suggested, that medial-frontal theta oscillations are associated with the implementation of cognitive control and that conflicts increase theta band activity. Still, a causal mechanistic understanding of theta oscillations during the resolution of combined subliminal and conscious conflicts is missing. To investigate this, we combined EEG signal decomposition metho

Bidirectional Dynamics between Sibling Warmth, Conflict, and Rivalry and Depressive Symptoms in Chinese Adolescents: The Moderating Role of Sibling Structure.

Although the association between adolescents’ sibling relationships and depressive symptoms has been investigated, the within-person bidirectional dynamics between these constructs have remained unclear. Additionally, few studies have examined whether and how sibling structure moderates these associations. To address these gaps, the present study utilized four-wave longitudinal data collected at six-month intervals from 1,927 Chinese adolescents (Mage = 13.67, SDage = 1.69; 50.06% female). Using a random-intercept cross-lagged panel model, the current study examined the within-person bidirecti

The Role of Institutional Placement, Family Conflict, and Homosexuality in Homelessness Pathways Among Latino LGBT Youth in New York City.

Despite the overrepresentation of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) youth among the homeless, the processes leading to their homelessness are understudied. This ethnographic study sought to elucidate the role of sexual orientation in the pathway to housing instability among young gay men. Fieldwork included 18 months of participant observations in public spaces and at a homeless LGBT youth organization in New York City, as well as formal semistructured interviews with 14 Latino young men and five staff. Three distinct pathways emerged. Some youth became homeless after placement in
