BACKGROUND: The Colton blood group antigens Co(a), Co(b) and Co3 are encoded by the AQP1 gene which produces a water channel forming integral protein. The extremely rare Co-deficiency enables immunisation against the Co3 isoantigen.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four patients from different regions of Europe who belong to the ethnic minority of Romani (Gypsy) presented with irregular antibodies against a high frequency red blood cell antigen. Positive cross-matches with all red blood cells tested were reported. An Anti-Co3 antibody was identified as the cause of incompatibility in the four cases. Th

This study includes all registered cases of PCG in the whole of Slovakia since 1950. Whenever possible the diagnosis was confirmed and a genealogical investigation was made. The patients were assigned to one of two groups depending on their ethnic origin - Gypsy or non-Gypsy. There were 118 Gypsy patients from 45 families (later reduced to 41 families) and 87 non-Gypsy patients from 81 families. Results from the Gypsy population can be summarised as follows: (1) Exceptionally high prevalence (1/2,120) and incidence (1/1,250) of PCG. (2) Sex ratio of 1:1. (3) High probability of autosomal-reces

Direct sequencing was conducted on the regions of the exon 7 and 12 in the phenylalanine hydroxylase (PAH) gene amplified by the polymerase chain reaction, using solid-phase technology involving the biotin streptavidin system. A novel mutation and seven previously known mutations were identified in the PAH genes among 15 Caucasians and 10 Gypsies in the Czech and Slovakia republics, affected with classical phenylketonuria (PKU). Two of these substitutions (R243X and G272X) resulted in the generation of a premature stop codon, and a single base transition of G to A at codon 261 resulted in the

BACKGROUND: Over the last few years, the gender binary has been questioned, highlighting the existence of gender diverse people, who identify as neither (exclusively) male nor female.
AIM: The present study evaluated the possible differences in terms of psychological wellbeing between binary and gender diverse individuals, as well as the role of perceived social acceptance and religious fundamentalism as possible mediators of psychopathology in gender diverse people. Furthermore, the diversity of gender-affirming hormonal treatment requests according to gender identification was investigated.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Gypsy and Traveller communities in the United Kingdom (UK) face substantial health challenges. Smoking tobacco and drinking alcohol likely contribute to health disparities, but there is little national data on the prevalence or heaviness of smoking and drinking among these communities. We aimed to estimate the prevalence and heaviness of smoking and drinking among the UK Gypsy and Traveller communities compared with people from other UK ethnic groups.
DESIGN/SETTING: Observational study using data collected between 2013 and 2025 in a series of monthly cross-sectional surv

Despite decreasing overall smoking rates, ethnic inequalities in smoking persist. Although smoking is largely a social behavior, the underlying social network mechanisms for this are still unclear. We disentangled and tested potential social network mechanisms responsible for persistent ethnic inequalities in smoking. We applied Stochastic Actor-Oriented Models for 1644 friendships of 299 Roma and Non-Roma Hungarian adolescents in nine classes and 1605 antipathies of 294 adolescents in eight school classes over two panel waves. Adolescents were more likely to nominate same-ethnic peers as frie

Congenital cataracts facial dysmorphism neuropathy syndrome is a recently delineated autosomal recessive condition exclusively found in the Gypsy population. Congenital cataracts facial dysmorphism neuropathy syndrome is caused by a homozygous mutation in the CTDP1 gene, leading to disruption of the ribonucleic acid transcription machinery. This report presents a young Gypsy female affected by this rare disorder. Electromyography and sural nerve histology were in accordance with a hypomyelinating neuropathy. After clinical recognition of congenital cataracts facial dysmorphism neuropathy syndr

The Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome (WAS) is characterized by defective platelet and lymphocyte function associated with eczema and increased susceptibility to malignancies. It is caused by mutations of the WAS protein-encoding gene (WASP). X-lined thrombocytopenia, defined by low platelet counts and volume, may be an allelic variant of WAS. In patients with XLT from two unrelated families, WASP gene defects were identified by single-strand conformational polymorphism and by sequencing. Point mutations in exon 2 of the WASP gene were found in the patients from both families in which XLT segregated. S

BACKGROUND: During implementation of a community development project involving a severely disadvantaged Roma community, the community was threatened with eviction. Two scenarios, eviction with placement on the waiting list for social housing versus a replacement housing development, were identified and specified. A health impact assessment (HIA) was carried out to inform subsequent negotiations.
AIMS: To assess the health effects of eviction in comparison with that of a housing project for a Roma community; to make recommendations on short-term and long-term benefits of the two scenarios in o

OBJECTIVES: The Muir-Torre syndrome (MTS) is characterized by an autosomal dominant predilection to sebaceous adenomas, sebaceous carcinomas, and multiple keratoacanthomas, in concert with the cancer phenotype of hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC). Proof that patients showing a familial aggregation of MTS's cutaneous signs in combination with a specific pattern of visceral cancers which are consonant with an HNPCC diagnosis has been buttressed by the discovery of hMSH2 and hMLH1 germ-line mutations in such families. Our purpose in this investigation was to determine the germ-lin

We studied 4 siblings (3 men and 1 woman), ages 22 to 43 years, with congenital ptosis, external ophthalmoplegia, proximal muscle weakness and fatigability unresponsive to acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitors. Repetitive nerve stimulation showed a significant compound muscle action potential (CMAP) area decrement at 2 or 3 Hz. Nerve conduction studies and concentric needle electromyography were normal, and repetitive CMAPs to single nerve stimulation were not observed. Voluntary single fiber electromyography (SFEMG) showed increased jitter and blocking. Assessment of individual end-plates us

A comparative epidemiological study was done on renal lithiasis in gypsies and nongypsies in Eastern Andalucía, Spain. A family history of lithiasis in gypsies was obtained 2 to 3 times less often compared to nongypsies (1.14 versus 4.34 per cent). The male-to-female ratio of gypsies with lithiasis was 0.59 per cent compared to 1.54 per cent in others. The inverse ratio in gypsies contrasted with those obtained by various authors in western countries of white and black populations. There was a predominance of immediate family history of lithiasis in gypsies with stones (p less than 0.001, 11.8

BACKGROUND: Peculiarities of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) have been explored in ethnic groups, such as Asians, Hispanics, and Afro-Americans, but not in other ethnic minorities, such as Roma/Gypsies.
METHODS: In a retrospective, hospital-based study, all adult Roma/Gypsy patients included in the IBD databases of seven Spanish centres were identified as cases. For each Roma/Gypsy patient, a Caucasian patient, matched for several demographic features, was searched as a control. Data on phenotypic features, therapeutic requirements, and familial aggregation were recorded.
RESULTS: Sixty-eig

To determine possible variations in children's health status and mortality associated with variations in maternal stature, an anthropometric and demographic study was conducted in a Roma population of poor socio-economic status in rural Serbia. Data were collected during several years of anthropological fieldwork. The sample consisted of 691 women, ranging from 16 to 80 years of age. In addition to stature, Roma women's demographics, reproductive history, reproductive outcomes and health status of their children were collected. The results provide evidence of a significant association between

BACKGROUND: There are social groups with very low donation rates, and action is needed to try to reverse this situation. The goal of this study was to determine which approach is the best to use with the gypsy population in Spain to determine their attitude toward organ donation.
METHODS: The study population screened was the adult gypsy population resident in Spain. An attitude questionnaire regarding organ donation for transplant ("PCID-DTO Ríos: Questionnaire of "Proyecto Colaborativo Internacional Donante" about Organ Donation and Transplant [developed by Dr. Ríos]") was used as the asses
