Real-world cardiovascular risk estimation, blood pressure and LDL-cholesterol control: Two epidemiological studies in Romania, during pandemic and post-pandemic (SNAPSHOT-Romania).

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Data on estimation of cardiovascular (CV) risk by physicians and perceptions of hypertension and dyslipidemia control are lacking in Eastern Europe. Therefore, in patients with hypertension and dyslipidemia, during the COVID-19 pandemic and post-pandemic periods, we compared CV risk, blood pressure (BP) and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) control, as assessed by physicians, with the recommendations of the European guidelines. METHODS: Two observational, cross-sectional, epidemiological studies with similar designs were conducted in Romania during the pandemic

Epidemiology and hospitalization costs of chronic kidney disease in Romania.

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease or chronic renal failure is a progressive condition defined as abnormalities of kidney structure or function, present for longer than 3 months. It is estimated to affect more than 10% of the general population worldwide. Management of CKD represents an especially large burden for the health systems of low- and middle-income countries, and it has been recognized as a leading public health problem. Previous research articles reported an age-adjusted prevalence of 7.6% for Romania, but the hospital costs generated by CKD are unknown. The present research article

Clinical, epidemiological and molecular aspects of patients with mpox in Romania.

INTRODUCTION: To better understand the factors which influence the spread of monkeypox (mpox) infection, the patients that tested positive for mpox virus by real-time PCR in one of the main infectious diseases centers in Bucharest were analyzed in this study, amounting to one third of the confirmed cases in Romania. METHODS: Clinical data and laboratory tests were used to build the patient profiles. In the case of positive mpox results, next-generation sequencing of the viral genome was also performed to better comprehend the epidemiology of the infections and the evolutionary path of this vi

Study on the Refusal of Vaccination against COVID-19 in Romania.

The refusal to be inoculated with the anti-COVID-19 vaccine by a part of the Romanian population becomes a barrier against controlling and stopping this particularly infectious virus. The rapid evolution of COVID-19 vaccines has created confusion regarding health and safety. Many Romanian citizens refuse vaccination because of fears generated by uncertainties based on information obtained from fake news. At the present moment, January 2022, Romania has one of the lowest vaccination rates in the European Union, below 45% of the total population. In our study, we want to identify the determining

Epidemiological Study of Canine Babesiosis and Hepatozoonosis in the South of Romania.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence and distribution of canine babesiosis and hepatozoonosis in the south of Romania as well as to assess if there are differences in the prevalence between regions in that area. METHODS: Blood samples from 300 dogs from the south of Romania were screened for the presence of piroplasmids by PCR. Positive samples were further tested for the presence of Babesia spp. and Hepatozoon canis. Pearson's chi-square with Yates correction was used to determine if there is statistical difference between infected populations. RESULTS: Fifty-four p

Dermatobia hominis in a dog imported from Brazil to Romania.

BACKGROUND: Dermatobia hominis (Diptera: Oestridae: Cuterebrinae) is a parasite with an important zoonotic and economical impact in the cattle industry, distributed in Central and South America, inhabiting wooded areas along rivers and lowlands. It infests mammals including humans. Lately, there has been a growing trend for people to travel on holidays with their pet dog and also international trade of dogs has increased significantly in the last two decades. Hence, the risk of importation of exotic parasites, including agents of myiasis has increased. Dermatobia hominis has been commonly repo

[The quality of life if HIV/AIDS patients in Iasi Romania].

UNLABELLED: Quality of life in relation to health is a consequence of disease and treatment on the patient's perception of his ability to have a full and useful life. Due to its nature, the quality of life is a multidimensional and subjective construct, based on the patient's experience. We operationalized the quality of life using the following parameters: CD4 count and HIV viral levels in the patient's blood, the number of days of hospitalization, number of antiretroviral plans, types of side effects and their frequency, psychological issues (anxiety, depression, and neurotic tendencies). Epidemiology and epizootology of cystic echinococcosis in Romania 1862-2007.

Infections with cestodes from genus Echinococcus are usually acquired by oral ingestion of eggs, direct contact with carriers, and contaminated food (especially vegetables) or water. Echinococcosis, previously characterized as a malady of medical importance only, depends upon veterinary solutions and faces political obstacles; it is considered the most important zoonotic disease in Romania. As a result of the increased number of human and animal cases, Romania was framed in the forefront of the European countries and among the first countries worldwide in 1995. The present paper is the first i

Susceptibility to antibiotics of Bacillus anthracis strains isolated in Romania.

A number of 21 B. anthracis strains isolated from 16 pustules, 2 blood cultures and 3 cerebrospinal fluids during 2000-2004 were studied for their susceptibility to antibiotics. The antibiosusceptibility testing was performed by disk diffusion method, on Mueller-Hinton agar medium. Two of the studied strains exhibited resistance to penicillins, considered until not long ago as antimicrobial agents of choice for the treatment of anthrax infection. The penicillin resistance explained the difficulties encountered during the treatment of these two cases as well as the fatal evolution in one of the

Data on the incidence of subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) in Romania.

A programme for the active detection of SSPE cases hospitalized in the Clinic for Infantile Neuropsychiatry within the "Dr. Gh. Marinescu" Hospital, Bucharest, was initiated in 1975. The diagnosis relied on clinical, electroencephalographic and seroimmunological criteria. Thirty-three cases were sufficiently documented to be considered as SSPE (mean age on onset: 6.1 years; male/female ratio: 3.7). Clinical, immunological and epidemiological particularities resulting from this investigation are presented and epidemiological parameters of SSPE are discussed in relation to measles mortality data

The Surgical Odyssey: Romania's Contributions to Pituitary Gland Procedures.

The pituitary gland, a puzzling medical subject up until the 20th century, had its early pathologies first documented in the 19th century by Pierre Marie and Hutchinson, where the gland's meaningful study was hindered by its hard-to-reach location. This paper revisits the pioneering work of Romanian doctors such as Gheorghe Marinescu, Nicolae Paulescu, and Grigore T. Popa in surgical techniques targeting the pituitary gland. Marinescu's 1892 experiment, albeit unsuccessful, laid the groundwork for future research in this area. Before Paulescu, surgical attempts could be classified into three t

Seroprevalence of Infections with TORCH Agents in Romania: A Systematic Review.

Maternal-fetal infectious pathology-notably the TORCH panel (Toxoplasma gondii, rubella, Cytomegalovirus, and herpes simplex viruses)-critically impacts maternal and neonatal health. This review collates data on the seroprevalence of IgG and IgM antibodies against TORCH agents in Romanian women, aiming to discern regional and population differences and identify risk factors. Twenty studies were included in the review, revealing variable seroprevalence rates across the country. Regions such as Moldavia and Banat showed higher anti-T. gondii IgG seroprevalence rates than Bihor, with notable decl

Epidemiology of human giardiasis in Romania: A 14 years survey.

Giardia spp. is the most common intestinal protozoan (causing gastrointestinal illness) and the most frequent cause of parasitic gastroenteritis in humans and animals worldwide. The aim of this study was to highlight new data in a specific area regarding clinical presentation and epidemiological prevalence over a long period of time. Patients (a total number of 54,623 patients) admitted in a tertiary center for infectious diseases serving a county for a period of 14 years were tested for infection with Giardia. Positive cases were recorded through analyzing the clinical complaints, the month o

Filarioid infections in wild carnivores: a multispecies survey in Romania.

BACKGROUND: Filarioids are vector-borne parasitic nematodes of vertebrates. In Europe, eight species of filarioids, including zoonotic species, have been reported mainly in domestic dogs, and occasionally in wild carnivores. In Romania, infections with Dirofilaria spp. and Acanthocheilonema reconditum are endemic in domestic dogs. Despite the abundant populations of wild carnivores in the country, their role in the epidemiology of filarioid parasites remains largely unknown. The aim of the present study was to assess the host range, prevalence and distribution of filarioid infections in wild c

Investigation of thyroid nodules in the female population in Cyprus and in Romania.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The most common thyroid disorders, with an increasing detection worldwide, are the thyroid nodules and thyroiditis, which leads to an increase of thyroid cancer incidence . In two different countries with a different exposure to risk factors for thyroid cancer, such as Cyprus and Romania, the rank of thyroid cancer among other neoplasms is very different: the 3(rd) most prevalent cancer among females in Cyprus and the 12(th) in Romania, respectively. Environmental chemicals, such as bisphenol A have a proven effect on the thyroid function. However, the relation between the
