Human herpesvirus (HHV)-6B encephalitis has been increasingly recognized as an important central nervous system (CNS) complication after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. In this review, the best way to diagnose and treat this devastating complication is described. Drug-induced hypersensitivity syndrome (DIHS) is characterized by high fever, facial edema, diffuse maculopapular eruption, and multiorgan involvement. Human herpesvirus (HHV)-6 reactivation is an accepted criterion for the diagnosis of DIHS and has prognostic importance. We report a 15-year-old boy with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis who developed DIHS due to sulfasalazine, associated with reactivation of HHV-6.

Human herpesvirus (HHV)-6 was discovered 15 years ago and was then grouped as a member of the family human herpesviridae. Its first clinical manifestation was identified 2 years later as the agent responsible for exanthem subitum. BACKGROUND: Human herpesvirus 7 (HHV-7) is a common virus that infects children early and is accompanied by lifelong latency in cells, which is easy to reactivate in immunodeficient adults, but the underlying pathological mechanism is uncertain in immunocompetent adults without peculiar past medical history.
