The incidence of avoidable healthcare-associated harm in prisons in England: a retrospective case note review.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the incidence of avoidable healthcare-associated harm for prisoners in England. DESIGN: A retrospective cross-sectional case note review of prisoner healthcare records. SETTING: 18 prisons in England were purposively sampled for maximum variation of characteristics based on prison category (open, local, training, high security and female), type (publicly and privately run) and population size. POPULATION: After screening 15 027 prisoner records, two cohorts were selected: a sample of 6294 'enhanced risk' prisoners and a random sample of 853 prisoners not included in t

Using Norwegian National Patient Registry data to understand associations between potentially traumatic life experiences and mental health care use in adolescence.

Exposure to potentially traumatic experiences (PTEs) is common among children and adolescents and associated with an increased risk of psychiatric diagnoses. This study aimed to ascertain how the number of PTEs differed across adolescent psychiatric diagnoses. Data on PTE exposure were derived from the youth@hordaland survey, and Axis 1 data were from the linked Norwegian National Patient Registry (NPR). Among 10,257 total adolescents, 9,555 (age range: 16-19 years, 53.9% female) consented to register linkage, 8,845 of whom were included in the analyses. Having contact with Child and Adolescen

Estimating the Product Lifecycle Value of Trastuzumab Based on Registry Data in Sweden.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Trastuzumab was introduced in Sweden in 2000 for treatment of HER2-positive metastatic breast cancer (MBC) and later expanded to early breast cancer (EBC). The potential value of this innovative therapy was explored in economic evaluations; however, the extent to which these benefits were realised remains unknown. This study aims to estimate the lifecycle value of trastuzumab by combining randomised trial data with Swedish routine-care data. METHODS: Trastuzumab impact on costs and health outcomes was estimated with Markov models for MBC and EBC. Model inputs include

Pregnancy Outcomes in Canadian Women With Disabilities: Results From Linked Survey and Health Administrative Data.

We compared maternal, labour/delivery, and birth outcomes in women with versus without disabilities using a linkage of 2003-2014 Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS) and 2003-2017 Discharge Abstract Database data. Modified Poisson regression was used to compare 15-49-year-old women with (n = 2430) and without (n = 10 375) disabilities with a singleton birth ≤5 years after their CCHS interview. Women with disabilities were at elevated risk of prenatal hospitalization (10.3% vs. 6.6%; adjusted prevalence ratio 1.33, 95% CI 1.03-1.72). They were also at elevated risk of preterm birth (8.7% vs.

Neisseria gonorrhoeae positivity in clients presenting as asymptomatic contacts of gonorrhoea at a sexual health centre.

UNLABELLED: Background Previous guidelines at the Sydney Sexual Health Centre (SSHC) recommended empirical antibiotic treatment for asymptomatic contacts of Neisseria gonorrhoeae at the time of testing. With increasing concerns around gonorrhoea antibiotic resistance, it has been suggested that asymptomatic contacts should only be treated based on test results. METHODS: This retrospective study of data from the SSHC electronic medical record included a total of 295 gonorrhoea contacts from 1 January 2018 to 30 June 2018. The primary outcome was the proportion of asymptomatic gonorrhoea contac

Quality of malaria data in public health facilities in three provinces of Mozambique.

BACKGROUND: Malaria data reported through Mozambique's routine health information system are used to guide the implementation of prevention and control activities. Although previous studies have identified issues with the quality of aggregated data reported from public health facilities in the country, no studies have evaluated the quality of routine indicators recorded in health facility registries. This study addresses this issue by comparing indicators calculated from data from exit interviews and re-examinations of patients with data based on registry records from health facilities in orde

Long-term dementia risk in metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease: a population-based study.

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) has been implicated in cognitive decline through vascular and metabolic pathways, yet evidence linking it to dementia remains inconsistent. We aimed to determine this association by addressing implications of selection, confounding and reverse causation. We conducted a nationwide, registry-based matched cohort study including all individuals diagnosed with MASLD in Denmark between 2000 and 2020, each with 5 age- and sex-matched references without liver disease. Dementia diagnoses were ascertained through hospital-, prescription-,

Patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes hospitalized with COVID-19 in comparison with influenza: mortality and cardiorenal complications assessed by nationwide Swedish registry data.

BACKGROUND: The risk of severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is increased in people with diabetes, but effects of diabetes type and other risk factors remain incompletely characterized. We studied this in a Swedish cohort of hospitalized patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes (T1D and T2D), also including comparisons with influenza epidemics of recent years. METHODS: Nationwide healthcare registries were used to identify patients. A total of 11,005 adult patients with diabetes (T1D, n = 373; T2D, n = 10,632) were hospitalized due to COVID-19 from January 1, 2020 to September 1, 2021.
