Spontaneous splenic rupture is a rare but life-threatening complication of infectious mononucleosis. Patients typically present with acute abdominal pain most marked in the left lower abdomen. Occasionally the pain is referred to the left shoulder and preceded by "flu-like" symptoms. Palor, orthostasis, and tachycardia can also be observed. Because abdominal pain and tachycardia are unusual in uncomplicated cases of infectious mononucleosis, the possibility of spontaneous splenic hematoma or rupture must be considered. The case presented here typifies the clinical manifestations of this entity

Spontaneous splenic rupture occurs in association with infectious mononucleosis. Three cases of serologically proven infectious mononucleosis complicated by spontaneous splenic rupture are described. In two, the diagnosis was confirmed preoperatively by abdominal computerized tomographic (CT) scan. Treatment by splenectomy was curative in all three patients. Infectious mononucleosis patients who have acute abdominal pain must be considered for potential splenic hemorrhage.

A 28 year old man presented with haematuria and renal failure. Renal arteriography revealed bleeding into the pelvis of a solitary right kidney from a hilar artery. Multiple aneurysms were noted in the splenic artery. The spleen subsequently ruptured spontaneously and was removed at laparotomy together with the right kidney. Histological examination of the spleen and kidney revealed an acute necrotizing vasculitis involving medium-sized and smaller arteries confirming a diagnosis of polyarteritis nodosa. An area of infarction involved a subcapsular area of the spleen. Spontaneous splenic ruptu

INTRODUCTION: Acute aortic syndrome (AAS) includes the disease processes of aortic dissection, penetrating atherosclerotic ulcer, and intramural hematoma. This case demonstrates an atypical presentation of the disease and offers approaches to potentially prevent missed diagnoses.
CASE REPORT: An 87-year-old female with hypertension and Alzheimer's dementia presented to the emergency department with stable vital signs and a chief complaint of throat pain. Initial work-up was significant for ischemia on electrocardiogram and elevated troponin. Computed tomography of the soft tissue neck reveale

Spontaneous rupture of the Iliac Vein is very rare in practice. In over 90% of cases, the venous lesion is located on the left side. The exact etiology of this condition is unknown. Spontaneous injury of the iliac vein is thought to be favored by intense exercise, constipation, cough, labor, May-Thurner syndrome or pre-existing inflammatory changes in the venous wall are also implicated. We present the case of an 83-year-old woman who is brought to the Emergency Department for abdominal pain located in the left flank and in the left iliac fossa, which appeared after a medium physical exertion.

Teaching point: Spontaneous perforation with biliary peritonitis is a rare complication of bile duct cysts which should be considered in a patient presenting with acute abdomen, ascites, and dilated biliary tree on imaging.

A 2-year-old boy of consanguineous parents presented with spontaneous globe rupture of the right eye that initially raised suspicions of child abuse. Other ocular and extraocular findings, a similar history of corneal rupture following minor trauma in his sibling, and genetic analysis confirmed the diagnosis of brittle cornea syndrome. [J Pediatr Ophthalmol Strabismus. 2022;59(4):e42-e45.].

Spontaneous rupture of an intercostal artery is exceptionally rare. It can be complicated by haemothorax, haematoma and/or retroperitoneal haemorrhage, which contributes to its morbidity and mortality. The authors report a case of a 76-year-old patient who was referred to the emergency department for pain associated with the appearance of a mass with progressive growth for 2 days in the right subscapular region. The patient had no previous history of trauma, ecchymosis or noticeable skin changes. History included the use of acetylsalicylic acid and a history of heart failure, as well as haemod

Bilateral patellar tendon rupture is an extremely rare occurrence, especially in otherwise healthy individuals without systemic disease. The authors report the case of a man who presented with simultaneous, spontaneous bilateral rupture of his patellar tendons. He had a history of unilateral patellar tendinopathy but no other predisposing risk factors such as steroid or fluoroquinolone use. He underwent surgical repair and following intensive rehabilitation, he returned to baseline physical activity 6 months post injury.

BACKGROUND: Nontraumatic, spontaneous rupture of the ascending aorta is rare and the etiology is largely unknown.
METHODS: We reviewed seven patients from our institution, with no known aortic disease or hereditary connective tissue disorder that presented with spontaneous ascending aortic rupture from 2012 to 2017.
RESULTS: Most patients presented with non-radiating chest pain along with hypertension (71.4%). The mean ascending aortic diameter at rupture was 4.60 ± 0.62 cm. The median door-to-operating room time was 2.58 h, resulting from effective implementation of an aortic emergency prot

Spontaneous ruptures of the inferior vena cava (IVC) are rare. The mortality rate is high associated with all IVC injuries despite prompt resuscitation or operation. We present a case of 68-year-old women with spontaneous IVC dissection, presented as acute chest pain. Chest CT demonstrated a large amount of hemopericardium, and dilated inferior vena cava (IVC), suggesting cardiac tampon. Subsequently, hypovolemic shock and cardiac arrest occurred. After resuscitation, abdomen CT angiography was taken to find bleeding focus. Second CT demonstrated massive contrast extravasation to pericardial s
