Australian critical care : official journal of the Confederation of Australian Critical Care Nurses2017eng
BACKGROUND: Cardiac rehabilitation has a number of benefits for patients, yet participation in it is sub-optimal, especially in regional Australia. Innovative models of cardiac rehabilitation are needed to improve participation. Providing nurse mentors to support patients transitioning from hospital to home represents a new model of service delivery in Australia.
OBJECTIVES: To explore the impact of a home-based cardiac rehabilitation program in assisting patients to recover from Acute Coronary Syndrome and meeting the expectations of nurse mentors delivering the program.
METHODS: This case

Certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs) provide most of the anesthesia care in the rural United States. Rural regions of the US also have the highest opioid prescribing rates and opioid-related hospital admissions and deaths. Although CRNAs are the primary anesthesia providers in these regions, little research examines the strategies CRNAs may use to mitigate the development of chronic opioid use after surgery. The purpose of this study was to assess the views of rural CRNAs regarding their role in mitigating chronic opioid use after surgery and to determine what, if any, preventative

INTRODUCTION: Maternity unit closures in rural and remote settings of Australia have left a substantial gap in services for pregnant women. In the absence of midwives, and when women are unable to attend a maternity facility, registered nurses (RNs) are required to fill the void. While maternity education can attempt to prepare RNs for such encounters, there is little documented to suggest it meets all their physical and psychological needs. The existing challenges for health professionals, practising a vast generalist scope of practice while living and working in a rural and remote location,

CONTEXT: Informal caregiving within rural contexts in Canada is increasing. This is due in part to a number of factors related to the restructuring of the Canadian health care system, the regionalization of services to urban locations, the increased population of people 65 years and older, and the desire of this population to age within their rural homes. Most often, the informal caregiving role is assumed by rural women. Women tend to fall into the role of informal caregiver to elders because of the many societal and gender expectations and values that are present within the rural culture. Th

Burnout is considered a major negative outcome of work related distress in social and health care services, especially in nursing. In the present study 179 student nurses in their third year of training and 47 registered nurses, all working in the Austrian province of Salzburg, were examined with the Maslach Burnout Inventory and the Satisfaction With Life Scale. Compared on a regional and national level, burnout scores of student nurses were equal to those of registered nurses and workers in social and nursing professions. The specific stressors of education and training lead to strain compar

Rural regions of China are facing a more severe population aging problem than urban areas, and the diverse health and care needs of rural older adults bring great challenges to frontline nurses working at township hospitals. At present, a targeted core competency system for township nurses engaged in geriatric nursing has not been systematically constructed in China. This qualitative descriptive study adopted the Iceberg Model as the theoretical framework. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with six nurses and four physicians from nine township hospitals in Jiangsu Province. A total of

BACKGROUND: An important strategy to reduce maternal and child mortality in Mali is to increase the number of deliveries assisted by qualified personnel in primary care facilities, especially in rural areas. However, placements and retention of healthcare professionals in rural areas are a major problem, not only in Mali but worldwide, and are a challenge to the health sector. The purpose of this study was to map the mobility of midwives and obstetric nurses during their work lives, in order to better understand their career paths and the role that working in rural areas plays. INTRODUCTION: Women living in rural and regional Australia often experience difficulties in accessing long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) and medical abortion services. Nurse-led models of care can improve access to these services but have not been evaluated in Australian general practice. The primary aim of the ORIENT trial (ImprOving Rural and regIonal accEss to long acting reversible contraceptioN and medical abortion through nurse-led models of care, Tasksharing and telehealth) is to assess the effectiveness of a nurse-led model of care in general practice at increasing uptake of L

The complex health, socioeconomic, and environmental problems experienced by many American elders often place them at high risk for disease and disability. Over time, acutely or chronically ill older persons experience numerous transitions across various health care settings. Although availability of health services is improving in rural areas, barriers such as distance, geography, and poor distribution often limit access to health care. In a longitudinal rural ethnography, the health care transition experiences of older adults, families, and health care providers were examined. A major ethnog

The lack of awareness regarding rabies amongst rural primary care health staff and their adverse practices towards the management of dog-bite wounds is a major contributor to the high incidence of rabies infection and subsequent human mortality in India. A Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices survey was carried out involving 54 nursing and non-nursing staff working in 18 rural Primary Health centres and sub-centres around Baramati town of Pune district in Western India. Multivariable logistic regression models were constructed to assess factors that influenced knowledge of rabies and practices t

BACKGROUND: Rural residents have been experiencing higher stroke mortality than urban residents, and the gap has widened. Disparity in postacute care after stroke may increase the rural-urban gaps of mortality and disability. We aimed to examine whether rural patients with stroke receive the same postacute care and achieve comparable outcomes to urban patients.
METHODS: We conducted a cohort study of Medicare beneficiaries aged ≥65 years treated in the Get With The Guidelines-Stroke participating hospitals for acute ischemic stroke during 2017 to 2022. We used restricted mean home-time to com
