A Quantitative Framework to Assess the Potential of Earlier Cancer Detection to Improve Cancer Survival.

BACKGROUND: Earlier cancer detection through advancements in screening technologies and increased screening access and adherence may improve cancer survival. We developed a quantitative approach using a matrix equation to characterize cancer stage shift resulting from cancer screening interventions and estimated resulting survival improvements. METHODS: The expected percent survival improvement was defined a priori as 20%, and the analysis sought to characterize the stage shift required to achieve this goal. The matrix equation was populated with incidence and cause-specific survival for 16 c

Prediction of distant metastasis and specific survival prediction of small intestine cancer patients with metastasis: A population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Small intestine cancer (SIC) is difficult to diagnose early and presents a poor prognosis due to distant metastasis. This study aimed to develop nomograms for diagnosing and assessing the prognosis of SIC with distant metastasis. METHODS: Patients diagnosed with SIC between 2010 and 2015 were included from the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results database. Univariate and multifactor analysis determined independent risk factors for distant metastasis and prognostic factors for overall and cancer-specific survival. We then constructed the corresponding three nomograms and asse

Equity in adjuvant radiotherapy utilization in locally advanced head and neck cancer: A SEER-data based study.

BACKGROUND: Not all patients with locally advanced head and neck cancer (HNC) who are eligible for adjuvant radiotherapy (RT) following upfront surgery appear to receive it. METHODS: Data were obtained from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. Selected patients from 2009 to 2018 had locally advanced HNC, underwent upfront surgery, and were eligible for adjuvant RT. Multivariable logistic regression and chi-squared test were used to analyze available patient and tumor characteristics. RESULTS: Of 12 549 patients, 84.5% underwent adjuvant RT, 15.5% did not. Identifying the long-term survival beneficiary of chemotherapy for stage N1c sigmoid colon cancer.

Sigmoid colon cancer often has an unsatisfactory prognosis. This study explored the effect of tumor deposits (TDs) on survival, and whether their presence/absence influence individualized treatment. Data of postoperative patients with sigmoid colon cancer were extracted from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database. Overall survival (OS) was calculated using the Kaplan-Meier method and prognostic factors were identified using Cox regression analysis and random forest (RF). The nomogram's discrimination performance was evaluated using a concordance index (C-index), integrated di

Increasing incidence of rectal cancer in patients aged younger than 40 years: an analysis of the surveillance, epidemiology, and end results database.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of rectal cancer in the United States in young patients is considered to be low. Underestimating this incidence may result in a failure to diagnose younger patients with rectal cancer in a timely manner. METHODS: The authors conducted a retrospective cohort study using Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) cancer registry data. A total of 7661 patients with colon, rectal, and rectosigmoid cancer who were diagnosed at age <40 years were identified between 1973 and 2005. The change in incidence over time for colon and rectal/rectosigmoid cancer was calcula

2 years is a reasonable age cut-off level for prognostic assessment of children with hepatoblastoma.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to elucidate the prognostic significance of age in hepatoblastoma patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Data from 783 patients with hepatoblastoma were obtained from the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results database (2000-2018). The best age cut-off level was determined by X-tile, and the Kaplan-Meier method was used to estimate overall survival (OS) and cancer-specific survival (CSS). The results of the X-tile were verified by selecting the appropriate cut-off value to maximize the difference in survival outcomes at intervals of 1 year. The Cox regression model was used t

Systematic review of population-based bladder cancer registries: How criteria heterogeneity affects the comparison of incidences.

BACKGROUND: The population-based registry of bladder cancer (BC) raises specific problems intrinsic to the tumor, as the inclusion of noninfiltrating, potentially malignant and multiple tumors. We performed a systematic review (PRISMA guidelines) of population-based BC registries to obtain information on their geographic areas involved, last dates of real incidence of BC, and rules coding used in BC for uncertain behavior, in situ and multiple tumors. METHODS: Using MEDLINE and Google Scholar, we identified scientific publications of in the last 10 years in English or Spanish, whether they we

Quantification of Women Who Could Benefit from Hormone Therapy after Endometrial Cancer Treatment: An Analysis of SEER Data.

Our primary aim was to estimate the magnitude of stage I endometrial cancer (EC) survivors that could benefit from hormonal therapy (HT). Our secondary aims were to assess EC incidence in women below 50 and below 60 over the years, and analyze the overall survival and any influencing factors. We analyzed the endometrioid EC data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) program according to women's age, tumor stage, and grade. We analyzed the proportions of EC survivors below 50 and below 60 years of age and stratified those age groups by race. For age distribution and surviv
