Saccadic Eye Movements in Anorexia Nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Anorexia Nervosa (AN) has a mortality rate among the highest of any mental illness, though the factors involved in the condition remain unclear. Recently, the potential neurobiological underpinnings of the condition have become of increasing interest. Saccadic eye movement tasks have proven useful in our understanding of the neurobiology of some other psychiatric illnesses as they utilise known brain regions, but to date have not been examined in AN. The aim of this study was to investigate whether individuals with AN differ from healthy individuals in performance on a range of sac

Saccadic ping pong gaze in coma.

In this report, we describe the peculiar eye movements of a young man who became comatose after a head injury. The eyes moved rhythmically from one side to another, without pausing in the lateral positions. This phenomenon has been described as "ping pong gaze" (PPG), referring to short-cycling periodic alternating gaze with smooth eye deviations. In the present patient, however, a saccadic type of PPG could be confirmed by oculography. Possible clinical and pathophysiological implications are discussed.

Saccadic eye movements in idiopathic blepharospasm.

Visually guided saccades, memory-contingent saccades, and antisaccades were studied with an infra-red reflection technique in 12 patients with idiopathic blepharospasm and in controls. Latencies of the three kinds of saccades were prolonged. Peak velocities and gains did not differ. Our results indicate an initiation defect in the saccadic system, which may be localized in the caudate nucleus.

Saccadic eye movements in essential blepharospasm.

To provide evidence of an organic pathology for essential (idiopathic) blepharospasm, reflex saccadic eye movements in response to randomly stepped visual targets were assessed in seven affected patients and seven age-matched controls using the magnetic scleral search coil technique. The results indicate a significant prolongation in latency and a reduction in gain of horizontal saccades, and an increase in latency and reduction of peak velocity of large downward saccades. These findings suggest an organic component to the aetiology of blepharospasm, the pathology of which also appears to invo

Saccadic eye movements in myasthenia gravis.

The peak velocities of horizontal saccades were measured in patients with myasthenia gravis (MG) to determine whether they can differentiate MG from other causes of ophthalmoplegia. Eye movements were recorded with electrooculography (EOG) or infrared scleral reflection (IR) in 42 patients with MG, 26 patients with sixth cranial nerve palsy (CNP), 19 patients with chronic progressive external ophthalmoplegia (PEO) and 28 normal subjects. Despite limitation of ductions in MG, the group means of velocities of 10 deg saccades recorded with IR were similar in MG and normal subjects. With EOG, smal

Saccadic velocity measurements in internuclear ophthalmoplegia.

Five patients with internuclear ophthalmoplegia had horizontal saccades measured by electro-oculography. In all patients, abduction saccadic velocities were normal while adduction saccades were slowed either binocularly or monocularly. In one patient, adduction saccades were reduced in velocity, even though full adduction was present. Saccadic velocity measurements may be helpful in diagnosing internuclear ophthalmoplegia, especially in the early or subclinical case. As bilateral internuclear ophthalmoplegia frequently suggests multiple sclerosis, prolonged examination with more sophisticated

Classics to Contemporary of Saccadic Dysmetria and Oscillations.

Clear vision requires accurate gaze shift from one object to the other and steadily maintaining it when eyes are at the target. The rapid gaze shifts are assured by the high-frequency burst in the brainstem neuronal firing, the mechanism relying on the tight cerebellar supervision. The cerebellar oversight is equally essential for maintaining gaze on the object of interest. The cerebellar significance on the motor control of gaze and the consequences of cerebellar illness are known for almost three quarters of the century - since David Cogan published the classic paper titled "Ocular Dysmetria

Neurophysiology of the saccadic system: The reticular formation.

This chapter discusses the neurophysiology and function of subcortical circuits and cortical areas involved in saccade generation. While cells within the different nuclei of the brainstem reticular formation shape the temporal details of ipsiversive horizontal and vertical/cyclotorsional saccade components, the cerebellar flocculus, vermis and fastigial nucleus are thought to modulate these saccadic waveforms. Burst neurons in the deep layers of the superior colliculus encode the saccade vector in the contralateral field by a localized population in a motor-error map. The complexity of the sac

Effects of lorazepam on prosaccades and saccadic adaptation.

BACKGROUND: Benzodiazepines have reliable adverse effects on saccadic eye movements, but the impact of sex as a potential modulator of these effects is less clear. A recent study reported stronger adverse effects on the spatial consistency of saccades in females, which may reflect sex differences in cerebellar mechanisms. AIMS: We aimed to further examine the role of sex as a potential modulator of benzodiazepine effects by employing the saccadic adaptation paradigm, which is known to be sensitive to cerebellar functioning. METHODS: A total of n=50 healthy adults performed a horizontal step

Phencyclidine: A Rare Cause of Saccadic Intrusions.

Saccadic intrusions such as opsoclonus and ocular flutter are often due to a paraneoplastic or a parainfectious condition. Toxins/drugs may rarely cause them. Herein, we report a rare case of ocular flutter/opsoclonus due to phencyclidine (PCP) toxicity. Our patient is a 21-year-old male who presented with a 3-day history of headache, generalized ill health, and aggressive behavior. He was admitted with reduced level of consciousness following generalized seizures. He had features of sympathetic overactivity with ocular flutter and opsoclonus. Urine toxicology was positive for PCP. Despite sup

Instantaneous Midbrain Control of Saccade Velocity.

The ability to interact with our environment requires the brain to transform spatially represented sensory signals into temporally encoded motor commands for appropriate control of the relevant effectors. For visually guided eye movements, or saccades, the superior colliculus (SC) is assumed to be the final stage of spatial representation, and instantaneous control of the movement is achieved through a rate code representation in the lower brain stem. We investigated whether SC activity in nonhuman primates (Macaca mulatta, 2 male and 1 female) also uses a dynamic rate code, in addition to the

Orthogonal steps relieve saccadic suppression.

Although the retinal position of objects changes with each saccadic eye movement, we perceive the visual world to be stable. How this visual stability or constancy arises is debated. Cancellation accounts propose that the retinal consequences of eye movements are compensated for by an equal-but-opposite eye movement signal. Assumption accounts propose that saccade-induced retinal displacements are ignored because we have a prior belief in a stable world. Saccadic suppression of displacement-the fact that small displacements of the visual targets during saccades go unnoticed-argues in favor of

Saccadic reaction times in alternating cover.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to compare saccadic reaction times (SRTs) during the alternating cover with SRTs during monocular viewing. METHODS: Seven subjects with intermittent exotropia, eight subjects with esophoria and ten control subjects were participated. The normal-task was to fixate the central fixation point until the peripheral target appeared randomly either 5 degrees to the right or left. In the alternating cover task (AC-task), the cover was switched from the fixating eye to the other eye, central fixation target was simultaneously extinguished and peripheral target was li

Saccade adaptation in autism and Asperger's disorder.

Autism and Asperger's disorder (AD) are neurodevelopmental disorders primarily characterized by deficits in social interaction and communication, however motor coordination deficits are increasingly recognized as a prevalent feature of these conditions. Although it has been proposed that children with autism and AD may have difficulty utilizing visual feedback during motor learning tasks, this has not been directly examined. Significantly, changes within the cerebellum, which is implicated in motor learning, are known to be more pronounced in autism compared to AD. We used the classic double-s

Saccadic alterations in severe developmental dyslexia.

It is not sure if persons with dyslexia have ocular motor deficits in addition to their deficits in rapid visual information processing. A 15-year-old boy afflicted by severe dyslexia was submitted to saccadic eye movement recording. Neurological and ophthalmic examinations were normal apart from the presence of an esophoria for near and slightly longer latencies of pattern visual evoked potentials. Subclinical saccadic alterations were present, which could be at the basis of the reading pathology: (1) low velocities (and larger durations) of the adducting saccades of the left eye with undersh

The site of interference in the saccadic Stroop effect.

In two experiments, the source of competition in the saccadic Stroop effect was investigated. Colored strings of letters were presented at fixation with colored patches in the surround. The task of the participants was to make an eye movement to the patch in the same color as the central string of letters. Three types of cues were compared: Either the string of letters composed a word indicating a direction (the saccadic Stroop condition), or it was a set of arrow signs, or a peripheral stimulus appeared. Whereas response times and saccade errors were similarly influenced by the different type

Impaired saccadic adaptation in DYT11 dystonia.

BACKGROUND: Recent neuroimaging studies point to a possible pathophysiological role of cerebellar dysfunction in dystonia. The authors investigated the association between sensorimotor adaptation, cerebellar dysfunction and the myoclonus-dystonia phenotype. METHODS: The authors prospectively analysed reactive saccade adaptation in a genetically homogeneous group of 14 patients with DYT11 dystonia owing to a mutation of the SGCE gene. The authors used a backward reactive saccade adaptation task, a well-characterised experimental oculomotor paradigm involving the cerebellum. The principle of th

Eye position effects in saccadic adaptation.

Saccades are used by the visual system to explore visual space with the high accuracy of the fovea. The visual error after the saccade is used to adapt the control of subsequent eye movements of the same amplitude and direction in order to keep saccades accurate. Saccadic adaptation is thus specific to saccade amplitude and direction. In the present study we show that saccadic adaptation is also specific to the initial position of the eye in the orbit. This is useful, because saccades are normally accompanied by head movements and the control of combined head and eye movements depends on eye p

Saccade and vestibular ocular motor adaptation.

PURPOSE: This paper focuses on motor learning within the saccadic and vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) oculomotor systems, vital for our understanding how the brain keeps these subsystems calibrated in the presence of disease, trauma, and the changes that invariably accompany normal development and aging. We will concentrate on new information related to multiple time scales of saccade motor learning, adaptation of the VOR during high-velocity impulses, and the role of saccades in VOR adaptation. The role of the cerebellum in both systems is considered. METHODS: Review of data involving saccade
