Sacral Agenesis.

Sacral agenesis (SA) is a rare congenital neurological disorder characterized by the incomplete development of the sacral spine. This work summarizes the scientific literature on SA, including the following sections: pathogenesis, epidemiology, risk factors, genetics, clinical manifestations, radiological classification, diagnosis, and management. The aim of this work is to provide the most up-to-date and comprehensive medical narrative literature review for this rare congenital disease. This narrative review used PubMed, MEDLINE, Science Direct, and Embase databases. Between December 2022 and

Pilonidal sinus: management objectives.

In spite of a number of ingenious operative and non-operative techniques in the management of pilonidal sinus no single technique can be relied upon to prevent recurrence of this benign yet troublesome condition. Once thought to be a congenital condition it is now appreciated that pilonidal sinus most often an acquired condition due to accumulation of tough, bristly hair penetrating the skin, or local hair growing into a skin crevice, pit or abnormal follicle. The most common site is the upper natal cleft but the condition may occur in other sites especially where there is a crevice or irregul

Diagnosis and management of a sacrococcygeal teratoma at a tertiary hospital in northern Tanzania: A case report.

It is co … esent a baby that was referred to their center 5 days post vaginal delivery with a huge mass on the sacrococcygeal region. MRI revealed sacrococcygeal teratoma type II. Wide local excision was done. Tumor margins were microscopically negative. The patient recovered well and was discharged. The patient did not require adjuvant treatment. CLINICAL DISCUSSION: Routine ob …

A curative cryosurgical technique for advanced cancer of sacrococcygeal pilonidal sinuses.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Malignant degeneration of pilonidal sinuses of the sacrococcygeal region is rare but quite serious, as the tumor soon perforates the sacral fascia and becomes adherent to the irregular posterior aspect of the sacrum, making it very difficult, if not impossible, to remove all neoplastic tissue by conventional surgery, hence the high recurrence rate and poor prognosis. A new cryosurgical technique to treat advanced sacrococcygeal pilonidal cancer is herein presented. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seven men aged 30-75 (mean: 54.4 years) with advanced squamous-cell carcinomas (…

[Sacrococcygeal chordoma: about a case].

Sacrococcygeal chordoma is a rare disease. It has been described in less than 3% of cases. We here report the case of a female patient with locally advanced sacrococcygeal chordoma treated at the Oujda Regional Oncology Center in Morocco. The treatment was based on exclusive radiotherapy; surgical resection couldn't be performed. At 2-year follow-up the tumor is clinically and radiologically stable and general condition of the patient is good.

Extradural ependymal tumor with myxopapillary and ependymoblastic differentiation in a case of Schinzel-Giedion syndrome.

Primary extradural ependymomas are rare neoplasms usually of the myxopapillary type. Reports on malignant primary extradural ependymal tumors are exceptionally rare. We here report on a 3-year-old boy with Schinzel-Giedion syndrome (SGS), who presented with lumbar spina bifida occulta and a progressive extraspinal lesion in the subcutaneous sacrococcygeal region. Microscopic examinations revealed an uncommon ependymal tumor with well-differentiated regions reflecting myxopapillary ependymoma and highly anaplastic regions with numerous mitoses, necroses, ependymal rosettes and ependymoblastic r…

Clonal analysis of sacrococcygeal "teratomas".

Congenital masses of the sacrococcygeal region commonly contain multiple tissues and have variously been subclassified as neoplasms or congenital hamartomas based on clinicopathological and embryological observations. We have used a polymerase chain reaction-based assay for nonrandom X chromosome inactivation to infer the clonality of three cogenital sacrococcygeal tumors previously diagnosed as teratomas. One solid immature teratoma was monoclonal, and a predominantly cystic histologically mature mass was polyclonal. A third immature teratoma was noninformative because of baseline asymmetry o…

Stereotaxic Atlas of the Human Lumbar-Sacral Spinal Cord.

OBJECTIVE: A Stereotaxic Atlas of the Human Lumbar-Sacral Spinal Cord has been created to provide an anatomical basis for radiologic and ultrasonic imaging and electrophysiological examination, which are used to target the placement of lumbar-sacral epidural stimulating electrodes and cellular transplantation in order to restore movement in individuals with sustained spinal cord injury or a degenerative disorder of the spinal cord. Through the availability of an atlas that exhibits axial images of the cytoarchitecture of each cord segment with a stereotaxic millimeter grid of dorsal-ventral de

Bibliometric and Knowledge-Mapping Analysis of Sacrococcygeal Pilonidal Disease Research (2000-2025).

Sacrococcygeal pilonidal disease (SPD) is an acquired inflammatory condition predominantly affecting young adults and adolescents, with a rising incidence and substantial clinical burden. Despite increasing research activity, the global scientific landscape of SPD, including research output, co-authorship patterns, knowledge diffusion pathways, thematic evolution, and emerging research frontiers, has not been systematically analyzed in the peer-reviewed literature. This study aimed to address this gap using a multitool bibliometric analysis. Bibliometric tools (VOSviewer, CiteSpace, and Pajek)

Exome sequencing identifies variants in infants with sacral agenesis.

BACKGROUND: Sacral agenesis (SA) consists of partial or complete absence of the caudal end of the spine and often presents with additional birth defects. Several studies have examined gene variants for syndromic forms of SA, but only one has examined exomes of children with non-syndromic SA. METHODS: Using buccal cell specimens from families of children with non-syndromic SA, exomes of 28 child-parent trios (eight with and 20 without a maternal diagnosis of pregestational diabetes) and two child-father duos (neither with diagnosis of maternal pregestational diabetes) were exome sequenced. Clinical importance of variability in the branching pattern of the internal iliac artery - An updated and comprehensive review with a new classification proposal.

The main aim of this study is to present, describe and compare the most significant anatomical classifications of the internal iliac artery (IIA) and its branches, their pros and cons, to relate them to clinical practice and note their clinical importance, and to offer a new classification based on number of main vessels origins. Many classifications covering the detailed morphology of the IIA have been developed, focusing on the destination of vessels making it possible to determine the name and type of branching precisely. However, because the allocation criteria are overdetailed and of doub

[Differentiated approach to the surgical treatment of suppurative epithelial coccygeal passages].

When treating 3021 patients with suppurative epithelial coccygeal passages, a preference was given to the radical one-stage operations. In presence of the circumstances aggravating the course of the basic disease, the radical two-stage, or palliative operations were performed. The open and semi-open management of the wounds was employed.

[Sacral perineural cyst--report of a case].

The presence of cysts within the sacral spinal canal, so-called sacral cysts, is described in literature. These include 'sacral perineural cyst', 'sacral extradural cyst', 'occult intrasacral meningocele' and 'anterior sacral meningocele'. Sacral perineural cyst in these cystic disorders was first described as an incidental autopsy finding by Tarlov in 1938. Since then, several reports have been made describing the sign and symptom, neurological findings, roentgenographic diagnosis and cause and origin of the sacral perineural cysts, although many problems are not yet solved satisfactorily.
