Olive oil, other dietary fats, and the risk of breast cancer (Italy).

Data from a multicenter case-control study on breast cancer conducted in Italy have been used to analyze the relationship of olive oil and other dietary fats to breast cancer risk. Cases were 2,564 women hospitalized with histologically confirmed, incident breast cancer. Controls were 2,588 women admitted to the same network of hospitals for acute, non-neoplastic, non-hormone related, non-digestive tract disorders. Cases and controls were interviewed between 1991 and 1994 using a validated food-frequency questionnaire. The data were modelled through multiple logistic regression controlling for

Stimulation of anaphylaxis in the mouse footpad by dietary fish oil fatty acids.

The effect of fish oil-derived omega-3 (omega-3) fatty acids on anaphylaxis, Arthus and delayed type hypersensitivity reactions in mice has been investigated. Mice on a normal chow diet were fed eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid at a dose of 500 and 333 mg/kg/day, respectively, by a gastric tube over a period of 61 days. Control groups were given water, safflower oil or oleic acid. Anaphylactic and Arthus type reactions were induced in the mouse footpad using bovine serum albumin as an antigen. Carrageenin was utilized to produce a delayed type hypersensitivity reaction. The anima

Light damage in the rat retina: the effect of dietary deprivation of N-3 fatty acids on acute structural alterations.

We investigated the effect of depleting membrane docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n-3) content through dietary deprivation of n-3 fatty acids on the susceptibility of the photoreceptors and pigment epithelium cells to acute light-induced changes. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were raised throughout gestation, lactation and up to the age of 8 weeks on semi-purified diets containing either safflower oil (SFO, n-3 deficient diet) or soybean oil (SO) as the sole source of lipids. A third group was switched at weaning from safflower oil to soybean oil (SFO/SO). Rats were maintained on a 12 hr/12 hr light/

Metal oxides-based catalytic pyrolysis of lignocellulosic biomasses for bio-oil development: a comparative assessment on process optimization and characterization.

This study investigated the conventional fixed-bed catalytic pyrolysis using metal oxides (CaO, Fe₂O₃, and TiO₂) to enhance bio-oil yield from three lignocellulosic biomasses: safflower press cake (SPC), coconut press cake (CPC), and coconut shell (CS). The primary characterization, using ultimate, proximate, and compositional analyses, as well as TGA-DTG-DSC, was carried out in the experiment. SPC biomass had a high hemicellulose content (50.8 ± 0.11%), which is suited for bio-oil applications. An initial non-catalytic pyrolysis experiment was conducted at 550 °C with a heating rate of 25 °C/

Metabolic transformation of fat in obesity determines the inflammation resolving capacity of splenocardiac and cardiorenal networks in heart failure.

All fats are not created equal, and despite the extensive literature, the effect of fat intake is the most debated question in obesity, cardiovascular, and cardiorenal research. Cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying cardiac dysfunction and consequent heart failure in the setting of obesity are not well understood. Our understanding of how fats are metabolically transformed after nonreperfused myocardial infarction (MI), in particular, is incomplete. Here, using male C57BL/6J mice (2 mo old), we determined the role of omega-6 fatty acids, provided as safflower oil (SO) for 12 wk, followe

Developmental toxicity in white leghorn chickens following in ovo exposure to perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS).

Studies show that perfluorinated compounds cause various toxicological effects; nevertheless, effects on immune function and developmental endpoints have not been addressed at length. This study examined the effects of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) in white leghorn hatchlings on various developmental, immunological, and clinical health parameters. In addition, serum PFOS concentrations were determined by LC/MS/MS. Embryonic day (ED) 0 eggs were injected with either safflower oil/10% DMSO (control, 0mg/kg egg wt) or PFOS in safflower oil/10% DMSO at 1, 2.5, or 5mg/kg egg wt, and the chicks w

Anti-inflammatory effects of eicosapentaenoic acid on experimental skin inflammation models.

Anti-inflammatory effects of eicosapentaenoic (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acids (DHA) were examined on three models of skin inflammation induced in mice by topical application of an arachidonic acid (AA) solution, ultraviolet-B (UVB) irradiation, and contact sensitization with dinitrofluorobenzene. Ear oedema reactions induced by AA and UVB irradiation were significantly suppressed in mice fed a daily dose of 300 mg/kg EPA for 2 weeks. The contact hypersensitivity reaction was not impaired by EPA. None of the skin reactions was significantly inhibited in mice fed DHA or safflower oil. The result

Human essential fatty acid deficiency: treatment by topical application of linoleic acid.

An essential fatty acid (EFA) deficiency developed in a 19-year-old man who was being maintained on a long-term regimen of fat-free, intravenous hyperalimentation fluids. The EFA deficiency was reversed after 21 days by daily, topical application of linoleic acid to the patient's skin. The ratio of eicosatrienoic acid (20:3, n-9) to eicosatetraenoic acid (20:4, n-6) decreased to normal levels in the skin and serum with clinical improvement of the EFA deficiency syndrome. The cutaneous manifestations (scalp dermatitis, alopecia, and depigmentation of hair) were reversed with continued, topical

Maternal exposure to fish oil primes offspring to harbor intestinal pathobionts associated with altered immune cell balance.

Our previous studies revealed that offspring from rat dams fed fish oil (at 8% and 18% energy), developed impaired intestinal barriers sensitizing the colon to exacerbated injury later in life. To discern the mechanism, we hypothesized that in utero exposure to fish oil, rich in n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA), caused abnormal intestinal reparative responses to mucosal injury through differences in intestinal microbiota and the presence of naïve immune cells. To identify such mechanisms, gut microbes and naïve immune cells were compared between rat pups born to dams fed either n-6 PUFA,

Lung surfactant and fatty acid composition of lung tissue and lavage of rats fed diets containing different lipids.

Two nutritional models, essential fatty acid (EFA) deficiency and the feeding of saturated vs unsaturated fats, were used to determine the effects of dietary lipids on the fatty acid composition of rat lung and lavage. Semipurified diets containing 7% corn oil, 7% hydrogenated coconut oil (EFA-deficient), 10% butter or 10% safflower oil were fed to dams during lactation and thereafter to their offspring for a total of 24 weeks. Lipids were extracted from the lung lavage and lung tissue and their fatty acid composition was determined. The content of dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC), the ma

Xanthan gum/oil body-microgel emulsions with enhanced transdermal absorption for accelerating wound healing.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

The oil body comprises lipid droplets surrounded by a surface embedded with oil body-related proteins. To form a drug delivery system, an oleosin can be fused with foreign proteins and bound to the oil body surface. Here, safflower oil bodies carrying oleosin-human epidermal growth factor (hEGF) were mixed with xanthan gum to form self-assembled polymers, referred as an oil body microgel emulsion (OBEME) without any chemical crosslinking agent. The physicochemical properties of OBEME were evaluated and compared with those of natural lipid droplets. The electrostatic interaction between xanthan

Kinetic Study of the Quenching Reaction of Singlet Oxygen by Eight Vegetable Oils in Solution.

A kinetic study of the reaction of singlet oxygen (1O2) with eight vegetable oils 1-8 containing different concentrations of tocopherols (Tocs) and tocotrienols (Toc-3s) was performed. The second-order rate constants (kQ) for the reaction of 1O2 with vegetable oils 1-8 (rice bran, perilla, rape seed, safflower, grape seed, sesame, extra virgin olive, and olive oils) were measured in ethanol/chloroform/D2O (50:50:1, v/v/v) solution at 35°C using UV-vis spectrophotometry. Furthermore, comparisons of kQ values determined for the above oils 1-8 with the sum of the product {∑kQAO-i [AO-i]/105} of t

[Protective effect of alpha-linolenic acid in encephalomalacia in chickens].

Encephalomacia is a vitamin E deficiency syndrome which affects the cerebellum of young chicks. The lesion includes degenerative alterations of cellular and fibrillar elements, apparently as the result of the ischaemia caused by thrombotic events in the microvascular system. A supply of linoleic acid, as fatty acid methyl esters prepared from safflower oil (Carthamus tinctorius), caused a high incidence of encephalomalacia. On the other hand, linseed oil esters, rich in alpha-linolenic acid, did not induce any symptoms and protected the chicks to a large extend against the development of signs

N-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids Decrease Long-Term Diabetic Risk of Offspring of Gestational Diabetes Rats by Postponing Shortening of Hepatic Telomeres and Modulating Liver Metabolism.

The long-term influence of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) on offspring and the effect of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFA) on GDM offspring are poorly understood. We studied the long-term diabetic risk in GDM offspring and evaluated the effect of n-3 PUFA intervention. Healthy offspring rats were fed standard diet (soybean oil) after weaning. GDM offspring were divided into three groups: GDM offspring (soybean oil), n-3 PUFA adequate offspring (fish oil), and n-3 PUFA deficient offspring (safflower oil), fed up to 11 months old. The diabetic risk of GDM offspring gradually in

Reversal of epidermal hyperproliferation in essential fatty acid deficient guinea pigs is accompanied by rapid generation of inositol triphosphate.

This study probes the extent of coupling between the reversal of epidermal hyperproliferation induced by essential fatty acid (EFA) deficiency in guinea pigs, the hydrolysis of epidermal phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate (PtdIns4,5P2), and the rapid formation of inositol triphosphate (InsP3). Our data revealed that the incorporation of free [3H]-inositol into phosphatidylinositol 4P and PtdIns4,5P2 of microsomal preparations from hyperproliferative epidermis was markedly elevated when compared with epidermis from normal-fed animals. The reversal of the hyperproliferating epidermis by dieta

Gamma-linolenic acid in borage oil reverses epidermal hyperproliferation in guinea pigs.

As dietary sources of gamma-linolenic acid [GLA; 18:3(n-6)], borage oil (BO; 24-25 g/100 g GLA) and evening primrose oil (PO; 8-10 g/100 g GLA) are efficacious in treating skin disorders. The triglycerol stereospecificity of these oils is distinct, with GLA being concentrated in the sn-2 position of BO and in the sn-3 position of PO. To determine whether the absolute level and/or the triglycerol stereospecificity of GLA in oils affect biological efficacy, epidermal hyperproliferation was induced in guinea pigs by a hydrogenated coconut oil (HCO) diet for 8 wk.
