Pathogenetic aspects of hepatitis A virus infection in enterally inoculated marmosets.

Experimental hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection was studied in marmosets after enteral (intragastric) inoculation with special reference to the primary sites of HAV replication and immunopathology of the disease. The experiment was carried out using 28 Saguinus mystax negative for antibody to HAV (anti-HAV) and with statistically uniform baseline values of serum isocitrate dehydrogenase (SICD) activity. Each animal was infected with 1 ml of a 15% w/v stool suspension that was derived from marmosets infected with the third or fourth passage of the MS-1 strain of HAV. The incubation period measur

GBV-B as a pleiotropic virus: distribution of GBV-B in extrahepatic tissues in vivo.

GB virus B (GBV-B) infection of New World monkeys is considered to be a useful surrogate model for hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. GBV-B replicates in the liver and induces acute resolving hepatitis but little is known whether the other organs could be permissive for the virus. We investigated the viral tropism of GBV-B in tamarins in the acute stage of viral infection and found that the viral genomic RNA could be detected in a variety of tissues. Notably, a GBV-B-infected tamarin with marked acute viremia scarcely showed a sign of hepatitis, due to preferential infection in lymphoid tissue

Recombinant vaccinia virus expressing Epstein-Barr virus glycoprotein gp340 protects cottontop tamarins against EB virus-induced malignant lymphomas.

A strong association exists between Epstein-Barr (EB) virus and two human cancers, endemic Burkitt's lymphoma and nasopharyngeal carcinoma. In addition, the virus causes infectious mononucleosis [reviewed in Epstein and Achong, 1979, 1986] and more recently has been implicated in lymphomas arising in immunosuppressed individuals [Cleary et al., 1986]. The possibility of preventing or influencing the course of these diseases by vaccination has been advocated for a number of years [Epstein, 1976], especially in the case of undifferentiated nasopharyngeal carcinoma, which is the most common tumou

Individual tumors of multifocal EB virus-induced malignant lymphomas in tamarins arise from different B-cell clones.

Cotton-top tamarins were inoculated with sufficient Epstein-Barr virus to induce multiple tumors in each animal within 14 to 21 days. The tumors consisted of large-cell lymphomas that contained multiple copies of the Epstein-Barr virus genome and generated Epstein-Barr virus-carrying cell lines showing no detectable consistent chromosomal abnormality. Hybridization of tumor DNA with immunoglobulin gene probes revealed that each lymphoma was oligo- or monoclonal in origin and that individual tumors from the same animal arose from different B-cell clones. Thus the virus induced multiple transfor

A Middle Eocene Haplorhine Frontal Bone From the Tornillo Basin of Texas, and Its Implications for the Phylogenetic Relationships of Rooneyia and Other Paleogene Primates.

OBJECTIVES: Here we describe a well-preserved primate frontal bone (TMM 46513-1) recovered from Middle Eocene exposures of the Devil's Graveyard Formation in the Tornillo Basin of Texas. We also discuss the significance of frontal bone morphology for understanding early haplorhine phylogeny. MATERIALS AND METHODS: TMM 46513-1 was mechanically prepared, μCT scanned, and compared with a broad array of extant and fossil crown primates. Revised dates for the specimen were provided using 40Ar/39Ar geochronology. Dice-CT scans of Saguinus were used to investigate the contents of bony canals found w

PULMONARY ARTERIAL DISEASE ASSOCIATED WITH RIGHT-SIDED CARDIAC HYPERTROPHY AND CONGESTIVE HEART FAILURE IN ZOO MAMMALS HOUSED AT 2,100 M ABOVE SEA LEVEL.

Subacute and chronic mountain sickness of humans and the related brisket disease of cattle are characterized by right-sided congestive heart failure in individuals living at high altitudes as a result of sustained hypoxic pulmonary hypertension. Adaptations to high altitude and disease resistance vary among species, breeds, and individuals. The authors conducted a retrospective survey of right-sided cardiac hypertrophy associated with pulmonary arterial hypertrophy or arteriosclerosis in zoo mammals housed at Africam Safari (Puebla, México), which is located at 2,100 m above sea level. Herpesvirus ateles gene product Tio interacts with nonreceptor protein tyrosine kinases.

Herpesvirus ateles is a gamma-2-herpesvirus which naturally infects spider monkeys (Ateles spp.) and causes malignant lymphoproliferative disorders in various other New World primates. The genomic sequence of herpesvirus ateles strain 73 revealed a close relationship to herpesvirus saimiri, with a high degree of variability within the left terminus of the coding region. A spliced mRNA transcribed from this region was detected in New World monkey T-cell lines transformed by herpesvirus ateles in vitro or derived from T cells of infected Saguinus oedipus. The encoded viral protein, termed Tio, s

Multinucleate parietal cells and cytoplasmic inclusion bodies in the gastric epithelium of callitrichids.

Inclusion bodies (IBs) and multinucleate cells can be associated with viral infections; however, IBs and multinucleate cells have been described in normal tissue and with non-viral disease processes in multiple species. We examined fundic stomach from 50 callitrichids histologically for bi- and multinucleate parietal cells and cytoplasmic IBs in gastric epithelial cells. Callitrichids represented included 6 genera: Saguinus (4 spp.), Leontopithecus (1 sp.), Mico (3 spp.), Cebuella (1 sp.), Callithrix (1 sp.), Callimico (1 sp.), and 13 unspecified marmosets. Gastric epithelial IBs were present

Biomechanical and morphological determinants of maximal jumping performance in callitrichine monkeys.

Jumping is a crucial behavior in fitness-critical activities including locomotion, resource acquisition, courtship displays and predator avoidance. In primates, paleontological evidence suggests selection for enhanced jumping ability during their early evolution. However, our interpretation of the fossil record remains limited, as no studies have explicitly linked levels of jumping performance with interspecific skeletal variation. We used force platform analyses to generate biomechanical data on maximal jumping performance in three genera of callitrichine monkeys falling along a continuum of

Protective immunization against Epstein-Barr virus-induced disease in cottontop tamarins using the virus envelope glycoprotein gp340 produced from a bovine papillomavirus expression vector.

Inoculation with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) induces malignant lymphomas in the cottontop tamarin (Saguinus oedipus oedipus). This provides an experimental animal model for assessing the efficacy of candidate EBV vaccines which are intended to reduce the incidence of human tumours associated with EBV infection. Previous work has shown that experimental vaccines based on the major virus envelope glycoprotein gp340 prepared from the membranes of EBV-infected cells are effective in protecting cottontop tamarins against EBV-induced disease. However, not all purified gp340 preparations induce protecti

Entamoebiasis in zoological non-human primates in the United Kingdom.

Entamoebiasis is a significant disease in non-human primates (NHPs), causing a spectrum of clinical presentations ranging from asymptomatic carriage to severe, necrotizing colitis and life-threatening extraintestinal dissemination. This study examined entamoebiasis in captive NHPs across nine zoological collections from 2004 to 2020. A total of 28 cases, spanning nine Old World (OW) and four New World (NW) primate species, were confirmed via histopathology and Entamoeba histolytica immunohistochemistry. Entamoebiasis caused intra- and extraintestinal disease, including necrotizing colitis and

Identification of IgH gene rearrangement and immunophenotype in an animal model of Epstein-Barr virus-associated lymphomas.

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a human oncogenic herpesvirus associated with lymphoma and nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Because the susceptible hosts of EB virus are limited to human and cotton-top tamarins (Saguinus oedipus), there have been no appropriate animal models until the lymphoma model induced by EBV in human peripheral blood lymphocyte (hu-PBL)/SCID chimeric mice was reported. However, it is still controversial whether the EBV-associated lymphoma induced in hu-PBL/SCID mice is a monoclonal tumor. In this study, we transplanted normal human peripheral blood lymphocytes (hu-PBL) from six don

Influence of ultraviolet B radiation on vitamin D3 metabolism in vitamin D3-resistant New World primates.

We investigated the occurrence of rickets in adolescent tamarins (Saguinus imperator) residing at the Los Angeles Zoo. Compared to tamarins in the same colony without clinical evidence of bone disease (N = 6), rachitic platyrrhines (N = 3) had a decrease in their serum calcium concentration (P < .05). The affected tamarins also had lower serum 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (1,25-(OH)2D3) levels than did nonaffected colony mates, but 2-10-fold higher concentrations than in Old World primates of a comparable developmental stage. New World primates in many different genera are known to exhibit target

"Ontogenetic Scaling of the Primate Middle Ear".

The study of primate auditory morphology is a significant area of interest for comparative anatomists, given the phylogenetic relationships that link primate hearing and the morphology of these auditory structures. Extensive literature addresses the form-to-function relationship of the auditory system (outer, middle, and inner ear) in primates and, by extension, provides insight into the auditory system of extinct primates and even modern humans. We add to this literature by describing the ontogenetic trajectory of the middle ear cavity and ossicular chain (malleus, incus, and stapes) due to t

Comparative study on the distribution of Pacinian corpuscles in the pancreas.

BACKGROUND: Pacinian corpuscles (PCs) are pressure- and vibration-sensitive mechanoreceptors found in hairless skin, external genitalia, joints, ligaments, lymph nodes, prostate, bladder, etc. While they are documented in the pancreas of cats, their presence in the normal pancreas remains speculative. PURPOSE: The present study therefore investigated the distribution of PCs in the normal human pancreas and compared the findings with those in several other animal species. METHODS: The study subjects included 74 human cadaver specimens, 3 Cynictis penicillata, 2 Saguinus mystaxs, 1 Felis domes

Detection of Leishmania infantum DNA in captive wild mammals from an urban zoo in a visceral leishmaniasis-endemic area of Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a complex zoonotic disease transmitted to humans through the bites of Leishmania-infected phlebotomine sand flies (Diptera:Psychodidae:Phlebotominae). Its transmission dynamics are shaped by environmental, ecological, and anthropogenic factors. Rapid urbanization, landscape modification, and the rising incidence of human and canine VL in endemic cities raise concerns about parasite circulation at the human-wildlife interface, including within captive animal populations housed in urban zoological institutions. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: This stud

Evaluation of control and treatment of Gongylonema spp. infections in callitrichids.

Numerous cases of Gongylonema spp. infection with associated pathological lesions and clinical signs were identified in a collection of Goeldi's monkeys (Callimico goeldii) (GMs) at a zoological park during a 3-yr period. An increase in the incidence of clinical signs in the GMs and other callitrichid species prompted an investigation to determine the prevalence of infection within the collection and evaluate treatment protocols.
