Saline solution amnioinfusion for oligohydramnios after premature rupture of the membranes. A preliminary report.

In the conservative management of premature rupture of the membranes, most patients have oligohydramnios caused by continuous leakage of amniotic fluid. To avoid unfavorable effects of oligohydramnios on fetal development and well-being, we infused physiologic saline solution continuously into the amniotic cavity at a flow rate of 10 to 20 ml/hr with a new cervical indwelling catheter (PROM-fence). As a result the average pocket size of amniotic cavity was 2.7 cm before amnioinfusion, 5.9 cm 1 day after, 5.8 cm 5 days after, and 5.0 cm 10 days after amnioinfusion. The saline solution amnioinfu

SAFETY AND EFFECTIVENESS OF BLUE EYE HYPERTONIC SOLUTION VERSUS SALINE SOLUTION IN THE TREATMENT OF FLAT COLONIC LESIONS: A RANDOMIZED CLINICAL TRIAL.

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer (CRC) represents a significant global health challenge, with early detection and minimally invasive treatments playing key roles in reducing morbidity and mortality. Endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) is widely employed for flat colonic lesions, and the quality of submucosal elevation is a decisive factor for achieving complete resections, minimizing complications, and ensuring accurate histopathological assessment. Conventional 0.9% saline with dye is the standard solution but dissipates rapidly, while viscoelastic agents such as Blue Eye may offer more durable a

Efficacy of normal saline versus heparinized saline solution for locking catheters of totally implantable long-term central vascular access devices in adult cancer patients.

BACKGROUND: Heparin solution is routinely used to maintain the patency of infusion devices. Literature supports the alternative use of normal saline solution for flushing and locking intravenous infusion devices especially for pediatric patients. There is uncertainty regarding safety and efficacy of this policy for intermittent locking of implanted ports. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluates efficacy and safety of normal saline solution for intermittent locking procedures of implanted ports. METHODS: This is a retrospective observational cohort study of 610 implanted ports receiving 2 different l

Buffered solutions versus 0.9% saline for resuscitation in critically ill adults and children.

RATIONALE: Fluid therapy is one of the main interventions provided for critically ill patients, although there is no consensus regarding the type of solution that should be used. There are two main types: colloid and crystalloid. The most commonly administered crystalloid solution is 0.9% saline. Buffered solutions may offer some theoretical advantages (e.g. less metabolic acidosis, less electrolyte disturbance), but the clinical relevance of these remains unknown. This is an update of a review published in 2019. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of buffered solutions versus 0.9% saline for r

Resuscitation of intraoperative hypovolemia: a comparison of normal saline and hyperosmotic/hyperoncotic solutions in swine.

BACKGROUND AND METHODS: We compared a hypertonic saline-dextran solution (7.5% NaCl/6% dextran-70) with 0.9% NaCl (normal saline) for treatment of intraoperative hypovolemia. Fourteen anesthetized pigs (mean weight 36.3 +/- 2.1 kg) underwent thoracotomy, followed by hemorrhage for 1 hr to reduce mean arterial pressure to 45 mm Hg. A continuous infusion of either solution was then initiated and the flow rate was adjusted to restore and maintain aortic blood flow at baseline levels for 2 hrs. RESULTS: Full resuscitation to initial values of aortic blood flow was achieved with both regimens, but

Perspectives on clinical trials for hypertonic saline/dextran solutions for the treatment of traumatic shock.

Animal studies with hypertonic solutions suggest that they can achieve resuscitation of hypovolemic shock with extremely small volumes. Such small volume resuscitation might be ideal in the field treatment of injured patients. Our studies to date, with 60 patients entered into a prospective, randomized, placebo-controlled, and double-blind clinical trial, suggest that the use of a 7.5% NaCl/Dextran 70 solution increases blood pressures during transport. The solutions have been safe, and we have encountered no adverse side effects from their use. Survival rates to date favor use of the solution

Isotonic saline solution as maintenance intravenous fluid therapy to prevent acquired hyponatremia in hospitalized children.

OBJECTIVES: This review aims to evaluate if the use of hypotonic saline solutions as maintenance intravenous fluid therapy in hospitalized children increases the risk of hyponatremia, if the administration of isotonic fluids is able to protect against acquired hyponatremia and if the isotonic solutions increase the risks of deleterious effects such as hypernatremia or fluid overload. SOURCES: We researched the relevant literature on the PubMed (Jan 01 1969 to Jul 13 2011), EMBASE (1989 to 2011) and Cochrane Library (1989 to 2011) databases. Physiologic saline solution, Normosol R pH 7.4, and Plasmanate as reconstituents of packed human erythrocytes.

The authors compared the effects of three reconstituent solutions (Normosol R pH 7.4, physiologic saline solution, and Plasmanate) on hemolysis and cellular morphology of young (8-10 days' storage) and old (22-26 days' storage) packed human erythrocytes (PE). These variables were tested at 22 and 37 C and at two dilutions )1 part PE:1 part reconstituent and 2 parts PE:1 part reconstituent). Plasmanate produced unacceptably high levels of hemolysis, particularly of older PE, and should not be used as a reconstituent. Normosol R pH 7.4 and physiologic saline solution were compatible with both yo

The dynamics of vascular volume and fluid shifts of lactated Ringer's solution and hypertonic-saline-dextran solutions infused in normovolemic sheep.

UNLABELLED: Infusions of hyperosmotic-hyperoncotic solutions such as hypertonic saline dextran (HSD) are used in Europe for resuscitation of traumatic shock and perioperative volume support as an adjunct to conventional isotonic crystalloids. Whereas plasma volume expansion of HSD has been measured at single time points after the intravascular volume expansion, the detailed time course of fluid shifts during and after infusions have not been reported. We compared the time course of volume expansion during and after 30-min infusions of 4 mL/kg HSD and 25 mL/kg lactated Ringer's solution (LR) in

Comparing the efficacy of dextrose, mannitol, and saline solutions in male rabbits' chemical castration.

Chemical castration offers a noninvasive way to sterilize male animals without surgical complications. An ideal chemical castration agent should be affordable, effective with a single injection, free of side effects, and without negative impacts on animal welfare. Because there is limited research on chemical castration in rabbits, we aimed to investigate the histopathological and hormonal effects of intra-testicular injections of dextrose, mannitol, and saline solutions in male rabbits. Nine adult rabbits were divided into three equal groups. Under anesthesia, 50% dextrose, 20% mannitol, or 0
