Carbonyl-Enriched Nonionic Covalent Organic Framework Nanochannels for High-Salinity Ionic Thermoelectrics.

High-salinity electrolytes coupled with low-grade heat offer an attractive opportunity for ionic thermoelectric conversion, yet conventional fixed-charge membranes rapidly lose ion permselectivity in concentrated media because Donnan exclusion is strongly screened. Here, we report an isoreticular series of nonionic covalent organic framework membranes with comparable one-dimensional nanochannels but systematically varied pore-wall oxygen chemistry. Hydroxyl-substitution-regulated hydrazone-to-β-ketoenamine tautomerism generates carbonyl-enriched BthTb-3OH nanochannels, which preferentially par

PpCML14 from Kentucky bluegrass confers drought and salinity tolerance in transgenic rice.

PpCML14 confers drought and salinity tolerance by interacting with PpGMP1 for improved AsA biosynthesis and upregulating antioxidant enzyme activities, proline accumulation, and stress-responsive genes. Calcium is a universal second messenger in plant cells, regulating plant growth, development, and responses to environmental stresses. Calmodulin-like proteins (CMLs) are one of the Ca2+ sensors or Ca2+-binding proteins. However, the functions of lots of members in CML family remain largely unknown. A PpCML14 from the native Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) was examined to regulate drought

The molecular network in bacteria responsible for the mitigation of salinity stress.

The World’s major abiotic stress is salinity stress, which affects over 833 million hectares of agricultural lands and risks food security by reducing crop yields and interfering with plant physiological systems. It has been predicted that salinity stress will affect about 50% of crops by 2050. Through a variety of molecular mechanisms, PGPR (plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria) have evolved as bioinoculants that enhance plant tolerance to salinity stress. Bacterial molecular mechanisms include the biosynthesis of suitable key osmolytes, ion transporters, modulation of hormones via ACC deamin

Multi-Omics Reveal Extracellular Electron Transfer Mechanism Under Deep-Sea High Salinity.

Microorganism-mineral interaction is crucial for understanding the degradation of organic matter involved in the electron exchange in marine sediments. Widespread metal-reducing bacteria Shewanella spp. have a unique ability of extracellular electron transfer (EET); however, their EET activity and underlying mechanisms under high-salinity stress in the deep sea remain poorly explored. Here, we studied the EET process and the underlying metabolic mechanism based on a deep-sea bacterium Shewanella piezotolerans WP3. S. piezotolerans WP3 has comparable electroactivity to the model strain S. oneid

GABA-mediated neuroendocrine-immune regulation in Penaeus vannamei under low-salinity stress.

GABA, an important inhibitory neurotransmitter that exhibits diverse biological functions, has been widely investigated for its immunomodulatory effects. However, its immunomodulatory mechanisms in Penaeus vannamei under low-salinity stress remain unclear. Penaeus vannamei was used as a model organism and subjected to dietary supplementation with 2.16 g/kg fucoidan for 60 days, combined with GAT1 gene knockdown via RNA interference and exposure to low-salinity stress. These findings indicate that GAT1 gene knockdown significantly reduces GABA concentration (from 3.48 ± 0.23 to 2.63 ± 0.21 mg/m

Hydrogen sulfide-induced barley resilience to drought and salinity through protein persulfidation.

Barley (Hordeum vulgare) is a widely cultivated cereal crops, and its production is increasingly threatened by environmental stresses such as drought and salinity. Hydrogen sulfide is established as a signaling molecule that promotes tolerance to plant stress throught persulfidation, a post-translational modification of cysteine residues in proteins. The purpose of this study is to explore the impact of NaHS (sulfide donor) pretreatment on barley plants in enhancing tolerance to drought and salinity stresses, and determine if persulfidation is involved. In pretreated-plants, phenotypical trait

Influence of Salinity on the Extracellular Enzymatic Activities of Marine Pelagic Fungi.

Even though fungi are ubiquitous in the biosphere, the ecological knowledge of marine fungi remains rather rudimentary. Also, little is known about their tolerance to salinity and how it influences their activities. Extracellular enzymatic activities (EEAs) are widely used to determine heterotrophic microbes' enzymatic capabilities and substrate preferences. Five marine fungal species belonging to the most abundant pelagic phyla (Ascomycota and Basidiomycota) were grown under non-saline and saline conditions (0 g/L and 35 g/L, respectively). Due to their sensitivity and specificity, fluorogeni

Soil acidification and salinity: the importance of biochar application to agricultural soils.

Soil acidity is a serious problem in agricultural lands as it directly affects the soil, crop production, and human health. Soil acidification in agricultural lands occurs due to the release of protons (H+) from the transforming reactions of various carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur-containing compounds. The use of biochar (BC) has emerged as an excellent tool to manage soil acidity owing to its alkaline nature and its appreciable ability to improve the soil's physical, chemical, and biological properties. The application of BC to acidic soils improves soil pH, soil organic matter (SOM), cation exc

Salinity reduces site quality and mangrove forest functions. From monitoring to understanding.

Mangroves continue to be threatened across their range by a mix of anthropogenic and climate change-related stress. Climate change-induced salinity is likely to alter the structure and functions of highly productive mangrove systems. However, we still lack a comprehensive understanding of how rising salinity affects forest structure and functions because of the limited availability of mangrove field data. Therefore, based on extensive spatiotemporal mangrove data covering a large-scale salinity gradient, collected from the world's largest single tract mangrove ecosystem - the Bangladesh Sundar

Hydrogen sulfide-mediated mitigation and its integrated signaling crosstalk during salinity stress.

Environmental stresses negatively affect plant development and significantly influence global agricultural productivity. The growth suppression due to soil salinity involves osmotic stress, which is accompanied by ion toxicity, nutritional imbalance, and oxidative stress. The amelioration of salinity stress is one of the fundamental goals to be achieved to ensure food security and better meet the issues related to global hunger. The application of exogenous chemicals is the imperative and efficient choice to alleviate stress in the agricultural field. Among them, hydrogen sulfide (H2 S, a gaso

The transcriptomic response of adult salmon lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) to reduced salinity.

Salmon lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) are marine parasitic copepods living on salmonids and are challenging for salmon aquaculture. One of several treatment methods is the application of freshwater to the fish which can lead to lice loss. However, lab experiments have shown that salmon lice, acclimated to seawater, are capable of surviving for several weeks in freshwater, when attached to a host. If not attached to a host, they die within a few hours in freshwater but can survive a longer time in brackish water. The molecular mechanisms involved in the adaptation to low salinity of the louse h

Zero Liquid Discharge of Ultrahigh-Salinity Brines with Temperature Swing Solvent Extraction.

Zero liquid discharge (ZLD) of hypersaline brines is technically and energetically challenging. This study demonstrates ZLD of ultrahigh-salinity brines using temperature swing solvent extraction (TSSE), a membrane-less and nonevaporative desalination technology. TSSE utilizes a low-polarity solvent to extract water from brine and then releases the water as a product with the application of low-temperature heat. Complete extraction of water from a hypersaline feed, simulated by 5.0 M NaCl solution (≈292 g/L TDS), was achieved using diisopropylamine solvent. Practically all of the salt is preci

Effect of ambient salinity on immobilization of Caenorhabditis elegans by nematocidal agents.

The ability of three antinematodal agents to induce paralysis of Caenorhabditis elegans was examined in an aqueous medium with and without the addition of salts. The basic medium was deionized water supplemented, for control purposes, with the phosphate mixture used as a buffering agent in M9 solution. This medium was further supplemented with magnesium sulfate or sodium chloride, or both salts, at the concentrations used in M9. We report that the paralyzing property of ivermectin was enhanced by the presence of salt, while the efficacy of levamisole and chlorpromazine was reduced.

Acetylcholinesterase activity of the polychaete Nereis diversicolor: effects of temperature and salinity.

In order to estimate the potential use of the mean wholebody acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity from the ragworm Nereis diversicolor for the biological assessment of pollution by anticholinesterase agents in estuarine areas, we measured the effects of the main abiotic factors (i.e. temperature and salinity) on AChE activity. We report here that AChE activity tends to decrease in individuals sampled in tanks at a salinity of 30 per thousand as temperature increases. No tendencies in the evolution of AChE activity were observed in individuals sampled in tanks at a salinity of 15 per thousand.

Salinity-tolerant larvae of mosquito vectors in the tropical coast of Jaffna, Sri Lanka and the effect of salinity on the toxicity of Bacillus thuringiensis to Aedes aegypti larvae.

BACKGROUND: Dengue, chikungunya, malaria, filariasis and Japanese encephalitis are common mosquito-borne diseases endemic to Sri Lanka. Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, the major vectors of dengue, were recently shown to undergo pre-imaginal development in brackish water bodies in the island. A limited survey of selected coastal localities of the Jaffna district in northern Sri Lanka was carried out to identify mosquito species undergoing pre-imaginal development in brackish and saline waters. The effect of salinity on the toxicity of Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis larvicide to Ae. aegy

Climate change meets emerging contaminants: salinity shapes PFAS toxicity in Mytilus galloprovincialis.

Climate change is leading to more frequent and extreme salinity fluctuations in marine environments, and the presence of emerging per- and polyfluoroalkyl contaminants (PFAS) is attracting increasing attention. These two stressors can interact and produce different toxic scenarios. The present study investigated the combined effects of salinity (22 and 32) and perfluorohexyl acetic acid (6:2 FTA) at 10 ng/L on the biochemical responses of the Mediterranean mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis. After 28 days of exposure, a set of biochemical parameters was assessed: total antioxidant capacity (TAC)

Comparative metabolomic profiling reveals salinity tolerance mechanisms in a rice introgression line.

INTRODUCTION: Rice (Oryza sativa) is extremely sensitive to salinity, yet the metabolic mechanisms underlying salt tolerance remains incompletely understood. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we performed leaf tissue-specific untargeted metabolomic profiling of the salt-tolerant introgression line JN100 (JN), its donor parent Nona Bokra (NB), and its recurrent parent Jupiter (JU) to characterize metabolic responses to salt stress. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Comparative analysis identified differentially accumulated metabolites (DAMs) spanning diverse chemical classes, including amino acids, sugars and

Transport of pathogens through saturated porous rocks with variable flow and salinity.

The transport of pathogens through porous rocks is often regarded as a negligible process unless fractures are present within the medium. However, sedimentary porous rocks may have porosity that is capable of allowing the migration of pathogens through them even if there are no fractures. In this work, we investigated the transport behavior of pathogens (namely Escherichia coli and Enterococcus faecalis) through a sedimentary porous rock containing calcite (CaCO3). Core-flooding experiments were performed under saturated conditions and variable head; the flow was continuously monitored, togeth

Salinity and ionic composition drive prokaryotic community assembly in Tuolekule Lake, China.

Saline lakes in arid and semi-arid regions are home to unique ecosystems characterized by high salinity and alkalinity, as well as extreme environmental stresses. Despite these harsh conditions, they support diverse extremophilic microbial communities with distinct structures, offering substantial biomedical and biotechnological potential. Tuolekule Lake is a hypersaline, alkaline lake situated in a closed basin in the northern foothills of the East Tianshan Mountains in Xinjiang, China. This high-altitude extreme environment constitutes a distinct ecosystem. However, the structure of its micr
