Ethnoveterinary medicines used for ruminants in British Columbia, Canada.

BACKGROUND: The use of medicinal plants is an option for livestock farmers who are not allowed to use allopathic drugs under certified organic programs or cannot afford to use allopathic drugs for minor health problems of livestock. METHODS: In 2003 we conducted semi-structured interviews with 60 participants obtained using a purposive sample. Medicinal plants are used to treat a range of conditions. A draft manual prepared from the data was then evaluated by participants at a participatory workshop. RESULTS: There are 128 plants used for ruminant health and diets, representing several plant

Evolution of a ZW sex chromosome system in willows.

Transitions in the heterogamety of sex chromosomes (e.g., XY to ZW or vice versa) fundamentally alter the genetic basis of sex determination, however the details of these changes have been studied in only a few cases. In an XY to ZW transition, the X is likely to give rise to the W because they both carry feminizing genes and the X is expected to harbour less genetic load than the Y. Here, using a new reference genome for Salix exigua, we trace the X, Y, Z, and W sex determination regions during the homologous transition from an XY system to a ZW system in willow (Salix). We show that both the

Endoscopic and imaging appearance after injection of an ano-rectal bulking agent.

The use of hyaluronic acid and dextranomer (Solesta, Salix) injection in the anal canal is an emerging modality in the treatment of fecal incontinence. However, little is known regarding the endoscopic and radiological appearance following injection of this ano-rectal bulking agent. We report computed tomography and endoscopic findings after hyaluronic acid/dextranomer injection in the ano-rectal area.

Detoxification of ferrocyanide in asoil-plant system.

The detoxification of iron cyanide in a soil-plant system was investigated to assess the total cyanide extracted from contaminated soil and allocated in the leaf tissue of willow trees (Salix caprea). They were grown in soil containing up to 1000 mg/kg dry weight (dw) of cyanide (CN), added as 15N-labeled potassium ferrocyanide and prepared with a new method for synthesis of labeled iron cyanides. CN content and 15N enrichment were monitored weekly over the exposure in leaf tissue of different age. The 15N enrichment in the young and old leaf tissue reached up to 15.197‰ and 9063‰, respectivel

A new two-gene system of sex determination in a Salicaceae.

In angiosperms, dioecy has evolved thousands of times, and the pathways underlying the required floral changes are therefore expected to exhibit diversity as well as parallelism. Here we investigate Itoa orientalis, a dioecious Salicaceae in which immature flowers are bisexual, but the stamens or pistils then abort. This contrasts with the floral development in dioecious species of Populus and Salix, which lack any morphologically bisexual stage. A haplotype-resolved Itoa genome assembly revealed an XY system of sex determination with a sex-determining region (SDR) spanning ∼6 Mb and encompass

Feeding Preference Differentiation in Sympatric Willow Leaf Beetles Driven by Host Leaf Trait Divergence.

Insect herbivores often exhibit host preference and feeding differentiation underpinning fine-scale niche partitioning, yet their linkage to larval performance remains poorly understood. On the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, two sympatric leaf beetles, Chrysomela vigintipunctata alticola (CV) and Phratora vitellinae (PV) (both Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), co-occur on two willow species occupying distinct microhabitats: CV predominantly uses abundant Salix atopantha (SW), while PV specializes on rare Salix wangiana var. tibetica (LW) (both Malpighiales: Salicaceae). To disentangle intrinsic feeding resp

Repeated turnovers keep sex chromosomes young in willows.

BACKGROUND: Salicaceae species have diverse sex determination systems and frequent sex chromosome turnovers. However, compared with poplars, the diversity of sex determination in willows is poorly understood, and little is known about the evolutionary forces driving their turnover. Here, we characterized the sex determination in two Salix species, S. chaenomeloides and S. arbutifolia, which have an XY system on chromosome 7 and 15, respectively. RESULTS: Based on the assemblies of their sex determination regions, we found that the sex determination mechanism of willows may have underlying sim

Early selection of novel triploid hybrids of shrub willow with improved biomass yield relative to diploids.

BACKGROUND: Genetic improvement of shrub willow (Salix), a perennial energy crop common to temperate climates, has led to the development of new cultivars with improved biomass yield, pest and disease resistance, and biomass composition suitable for bioenergy applications. These improvements have largely been associated with species hybridization, yet little is known about the genetic mechanisms responsible for improved yield and performance of certain willow species hybrids. RESULTS: The top performing genotypes in this study, representing advanced pedigrees compared with those in previous s

In vitro degradation of willow salicylates.

Salicylates are defensive compounds against a great variety of generalist herbivores. Salicortin and its derivatives are labile compounds that degrade immediately when cell compartmentalization is ruptured, producing a 6-hydroxy-2-cyclohexenone (6-HCH) moiety that is a strong antifeeding cue. We studied the in vitro degradation of willow salicylates in the presence and absence of foliar enzymes at acidic, neutral, and alkaline pHs. Higher substituted salicylates were degraded in the absence of foliar enzymes at alkaline pH and in the presence of foliar enzymes at all three pHs. Salicin and its

Chronic tubulointerstitial nephropathy in six okapis (Okapia johnstoni).

Renal tubular atrophy with conical and medullary interstitial fibrosis with severe thickening of the basement membranes of atrophic tubules was found in six okapis (Okapia johnstoni). Focal glomerular atrophy, probably secondary to ischemic collapse of the glomerular capillary tuft, was also observed. Although the etiologies and pathogeneses of these nephropathies are unclear, primary damage of the tubular epithelium appears to be the most likely cause, and toxicity from ingested plant material, possibly willow (Salix sp.), is a possibility.

Honeydew production by the giant willow aphid (Tuberolachnus salignus, Hemiptera: Aphididae) and its effect on foraging yellowjackets (Hymenoptera: Vespidae).

BACKGROUND: Understanding the factors that promote the success of invasive species is important for managing biological invasions. Interactions between invasives and other species (e.g. competitors, pathogens, or predators), could favor or limit their success. In recent decades, yellowjacket wasps, including Vespula germanica and Vespula vulgaris, have successfully established in Patagonia. Additionally, the invasive willow Salix fragilis has invaded areas next to watercourses, which in turn are typically colonized by the giant willow aphid (GWA, Tuberolagnus salignus), an additional species c

A prescription for drug-free rivers: uptake of pharmaceuticals by a widespread streamside willow.

Following human excretion and limited removal with wastewater treatment, pharmaceuticals are accumulating in rivers worldwide. These chemicals can challenge the health of fish and aquatic organisms and since rivers provide drinking water sources, there is concern for cumulative exposure to humans. In this study, we discovered that sandbar willow (Salix exigua), a predominant riparian shrub along streams throughout North America, has the capacity to quickly remove pharmaceuticals from aqueous solutions. Our study tracked [3H]- or [14C]-labeled substances including 17α-ethynylestradiol (EE2), a

Toxicity of 56 substances to trees.

Toxicity data of substances to higher plants is needed for the purpose of risk assessment, site evaluation, phytoremediation, and plant protection. However, the results from the most common phytotoxicity tests, like the OECD algae and Lemna test, are not necessarily valid for higher terrestrial plants. The willow tree toxicity test uses inhibition of transpiration (aside of growth and water use efficiency) of willow cuttings grown in spiked solutions or soils as end point to quantify toxicity. This overview presents results from 60 studies including 24 new unpublished experiments for 56 differ

Transpiration and metabolisation of TCE by willow plants - a pot experiment.

Willows were grown in glass cylinders filled with compost above water-saturated quartz sand, to trace the fate of TCE in water and plant biomass. The experiment was repeated once with the same plants in two consecutive years. TCE was added in nominal concentrations of 0, 144, 288, and 721 mg l(-1). Unplanted cylinders were set-up and spiked with nominal concentrations of 721 mg l(-1) TCE in the second year. Additionally, (13)C-enriched TCE solution (δ(13)C = 110.3 ‰) was used. Periodically, TCE content and metabolites were analyzed in water and plant biomass. The presence of TCE-degrading micr

Monitoring network design for phytoremediation systems using primary and secondary data sources.

Phytoremediation, or contaminant removal using plants, has been deployed at many sites to remediate contaminated soil and groundwater. Research has shown that trees are low-cost, rapid, and relatively simple-to-use monitoring systems as well as inexpensive alternatives to traditional pump-and-treat systems. However, tree monitoring is also an indirect measure of subsurface contamination and inherently more uncertain than conventional techniques such as wells or soil borings that measure contaminant concentrations directly. This study explores the implications for monitoring network design at r

USE OF NATIVE PLANTS FOR REMEDIATION OF TRICHLOROETHYLENE: I. DECIDUOUS TREES.

Phytoremediation of trichloroethylene (TCE) can be accomplished using fast-growing, deep-rooting trees. The most commonly used tree for phytoremediation of TCE has been the hybrid poplar. This study looks at native southeastern trees of the United States as alternatives to the use of hybrid poplar. The use of native trees for phytoremediation allows for simultaneous restoration of contaminated sites. A 2-mo, greenhouse-based study was conducted to determine if sycamore (Plantanus L.), eastern cottonwood (Populus deltoides), sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua L.), and willow (Salix sachalinensis

Detection of Anoplophora glabripennis (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) larvae in different host trees and tissues by automated analyses of sound-impulse frequency and temporal patterns.

Anoplophora glabripennis (Motschulsky) (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae), an invasive pest quarantined in the United States, is difficult to detect because the larvae feed unseen inside trees. Acoustic technology has potential for reducing costs and hazards of tree inspection, but development of practical methods for acoustic detection requires the solution of technical problems involving transmission of resonant frequencies in wood and high background noise levels in the urban environments where most infestations have occurred. A study was conducted to characterize sounds from larvae of different ag

Treatment of Atopic Dermatitis, Dermatophytes, and Syphilis by Indigenous Peoples Prior to 1850.

The Iroquoian and Algonquian-speaking Peoples of North America discovered numerous natural treatments to dermatological conditions long prior to European settlement. Anthropological evidence suggests that treatments for atopic dermatitis, dermatophyte infections, and syphilitic lesions were derived from Sassafras albidum, genus Salix trees, and Sassafras officinale. Literature suggests these medicinal properties are attributed to the naturally abundant safrole, salicylic acid, and ascorbic acid in these flora. Numerous instances of these natural medicinal discoveries later being implemented in

Bracon planitibiae sp. nov. (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), a new parasitoid of Asian longhorned beetle (Anoplophora glabripennis).

Bracon planitibiae sp. nov. (Hymenoptera, Braconidae), a new species parasitizing first instar larvae of Asian longhorned beetle, Anoplophora glabripennis (Motschulsky), (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae), is described. Its host is a serious wood boring pest in China, North America and Europe, where it causes severe damages to plantations of Acer spp., Populus spp., Salix spp., Ulmus spp., and many other ornamental and forest tree species. We obtained a variety of parasitoid species by using Asian longhorned beetle-infested sentinel logs to attract natural parasitoids, of which B. planitibiae sp. nov.

United States Pharmacopeia Safety Review of Willow Bark.

Willow bark (Salix spp.) is an ingredient in some dietary supplements. No serious adverse effects were reported from trials of willow bark extracts delivering 120 - 240 mg salicin (the purported active constituent) daily for up to 8 weeks. All studies involved adults only; none involved special subpopulations such as pregnant or breastfeeding women, or children. The most common adverse effects associated with willow bark are gastrointestinal; a few allergic reactions were also reported. Some publications advise caution when taking willow bark. There is a risk of increased bleeding in vulnerabl
