During their different life stages, parasites undergo remarkable morphological, physiological, and behavioral "metamorphoses" to meet the needs of their changing habitats. This is even true for ectoparasites, such as the monogeneans, which typically have a free-swimming larval stage (oncomiracidium) that seeks out and attaches to the external surfaces of fish where they mature. Intracellular recordings were obtained from pineal photoreceptors of the trout Salmo irideus. Illumination produced graded hyperpolarizing responses whose time course resembled that of retinal cones in lower vertebrates. The pineal organ (or pineal) of a teleost fish, the pike, contains typical (cone-like) and modified photoreceptor cells. Both are involved in indole metabolism, including melatonin production. How photoperiod controls melatonin biosynthesis in organs containing mainly photoreceptor cells, remains unclarified. Rostral lobes of the pars distalis from rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri, were incubated in vitro in a medium containing 14C-labelled lysine. Continuous recordings were made of pH, Po2, and Pco2 of arterial blood in an extracorporeal circulation during a 20-min period of deep hypoxia (inspired Po2 = 40 Torr) and subsequent normoxia in rainbow trout. The electrical stimulation of the olfactory nerve allows to record steady field potentials in the olfactory bulb of the trout Salmo gairdneri. 200 microns separate recording points which are localised on a tridimensional network. At 18, 24, 30 and 38 ms the amplitudes are measured and plotted in a calculator which determines the isopotentials in any vertical, horizontal and sagittal planes. With this method, we have an instantaneous and global vision of bulbar activity and we observe striking anatomo-functional correlations in the olfactory bulb of Salmo gairdneri.

The occurrence of C. botulinum on two Finnish rainbow trout farms were studied. C. botulinum type E toxin was detected from samples of fish intestines in 10% and 4% of the samples and in 0% and 100% of dam bottom sediments, respectively. The acute toxicity to rainbow trout of untreated ammonia-base neutral sulfite pulp mill waste liquor was demonstrated in these experimants. A mean LC50 of 0.82% and 95% confidence interval of 0.08 - 1.56% was obtained in four static bioassays. Lignin, sulfur dioxide, and ammonia were implicated as toxic components. The latter two were probably the most toxic.

Microoxygen polarographic electrodes were constructed and used to measure oxygen tension (P(OO2)) in the eyes of rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri). The values obtained are compared with arterial blood and environmental water P(OO2) and indicate that there is an oxygen-concentrating mechanism in the eye supplying oxygen to the avascular retina. Parasitic salmon lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) are a constraint to the sustainable growth of salmonids in open net pens, and this issue has caused production to level off in recent years in the most aquaculture-intensive areas of Norway. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and mercury (Hg) are harmful compounds that are widely present in the environment, partly due to spills and atmospheric pollution.
