INTRODUCTION: Sex reassignment surgery is an important step for transsexuals, since it is known to help the patients to live more easily in their gender role and to significantly increase quality of life.
AIMS: To critically evaluate our experience with the combined procedure of hysterectomy, bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, and bilateral mastectomy for female-to-male (FtM) transsexual patients.
METHODS: Thirty-two FtM transsexuals who underwent hysterectomy, bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, and bilateral mastectomy in one single operative setting.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Operating time and

Women with a deleterious germline mutation in BRCA1 or BRCA2 are candidates for bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy (BSO). To address the need for adjustment of the current BSO procedure, we investigated the length and the nature of the fallopian tube epithelium that is not removed by BSO. Fourteen consecutive hysterectomy specimens were collected. Complete cross-sections with a 3-mm interval were made of the tubal lumen from the outside of the uterus at the cutoff point of the current BSO procedure to the uterine cavity and examined for the presence or absence of tubal type (ciliated) epithelium

OBJECTIVE: Women at high risk of ovarian cancer are currently offered two options: either surveillance or prophylactic bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy. The efficacy and outcome of surveillance remain unclear.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective study. Between 1994 and 2000, we screened 383 high-risk women, of which 152 were BRCA1/2 mutation carriers. Surveillance consisted of annual gynecological examination, transvaginal ultrasound, and serum CA125 measurement. Exploratory or prophylactic surgery was performed in selected cases.
RESULTS: There were no screen-detected primary ovarian cance

BACKGROUND: Women with a germline BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation have a significantly increased risk of developing ovarian cancer compared with women in the general population and may consider bilateral prophylactic oophorectomy as a risk-reducing option.
CASE: We report a case of occult fallopian tube cancer diagnosed at prophylactic surgery in a patient with a BRCA2 mutation.
CONCLUSIONS: This report acts as a reminder of the importance of removing as much of the fallopian tube as possible during prophylactic surgery in BRCA1 and BRCA2 carriers and of the need for careful pathological examination

IMPORTANCE: Most women with a BRCA1/2 pathogenic variant undergo premature menopause with potential short- and long-term morbidity due to the current method of ovarian carcinoma prevention: risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy (RRSO). Because the fallopian tubes play a key role in ovarian cancer pathogenesis, salpingectomy with delayed oophorectomy may be a novel risk-reducing strategy with benefits of delaying menopause.
OBJECTIVE: To compare menopause-related quality of life after risk-reducing salpingectomy (RRS) with delayed oophorectomy with RRSO in carriers of the BRCA1/2 pathogenic vari

INTRODUCTION: Cancer during pregnancy is uncommon. Symptoms caused by ovarian dysgerminoma in pregnancy can be difficult to recognize, leading to a delay in diagnosis and treatment. In addition, treatment of twisted ovarian dysgerminoma in pregnancy to improve the maternal and perinatal outcomes is the main challenges that confront obstetricians and gynecologic oncologists because surgery often results in preterm labor and delivery.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 29-year-old woman primigravida came with severe lower abdominal pain. An intrauterine foetus at 19 weeks of gestation and an enlarged left ov

OBJECTIVE: The study compared the in-hospital complications and related outcomes between women who underwent bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy at hysterectomy for benign diseases and those who had hysterectomy only.
METHODS: We conducted a population-based, retrospective cohort study using data from Taiwan's National Health Insurance program. Women who underwent concurrent bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy at hysterectomy for benign indications (n = 34,509) were compared with those who had hysterectomy only (n = 176,305). Separate models were estimated to account for the effect of baseline comorb

Background. Serous tubal intraepithelial carcinoma (STIC) is a precursor lesion for high-grade pelvic serous carcinoma. The incidence of STIC is estimated to occur in 0.6% to 6% of women who are BRCA positive or have a strong family history of breast or ovarian cancer. Case. A 56-year-old woman underwent robotic-assisted sacrocolpopexy, rectocele repair, and concurrent bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy for recurrent stage 3 pelvic organ prolapse and reported family history of ovarian cancer. Histopathologic examination of her left fallopian tube revealed STIC. Conclusion. We report this rare occ

Peritoneal inclusion cysts (PICs) are benign cystic lesions typically observed in women of reproductive age with prior pelvic surgery, endometriosis, or pelvic inflammatory disease. To date, no cases of PICs have been reported in transgender men in South Korea. We present the case of a 28-year-old transgender man who developed a large PIC 1.5 years after undergoing total laparoscopic hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy as part of gender-affirming surgery. Ultrasound images revealed a progressively enlarging pelvic cyst, and magnetic resonance imaging findings suggested possible co

Pyosalpinx is a rare infection of the fallopian tube characterized by pus accumulation and inflammation, which can progress to severe sepsis if not promptly treated. We describe a 54-year-old premenopausal woman who presented with fever, localized abdominal pain, and laboratory findings consistent with sepsis. Diagnostic imaging revealed a complex adnexal mass concerning for a tubo-ovarian abscess. Despite empiric broad-spectrum antibiotic therapy, the infection persisted, prompting a robotic-assisted total laparoscopic hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy for definitive source co

INTRODUCTION: Risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy (RRSO) is recommended by international guidelines in women with BRCA1/2 germline pathogenic variants (PV) to prevent ovarian cancer. Despite the solid recommendation, women frequently refuse surgery and uptake rates reported in the literature are diverse. This study analyses the uptake rate of RRSO in BRCA 1/2 PV-carriers referred to a specialised referral centre for first counselling and investigate personal factors linked to the decision.
METHODS: This is a single-centre prospective study of BRCA1/2 PV-carriers referred for the first counsel

BACKGROUND: Risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy (RRSO) is recommended for women at increased risk of breast and ovarian cancer. We launched a prospective study of women receiving RRSO, including those with mutations in genes beyond BRCA1/2.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: 80 women were enrolled for RRSO with sectioning and extensively examining the fimbriae (SEE-FIM) protocol between October 2016 and June 2022. The majority of participants had inherited susceptibility gene mutations or a family history suggesting ovarian cancer risk, while patients with isolated metastatic high-grade serous cancer of u

Prophylactic salpingo-oophorectomy (PSO) can be offered to all patients suffering from colorectal cancer to prevent ovarian metastasis (OM). Arguments to offer PSO are given for discussion: 1. PSO for colorectal cancer is mentioned in various guidelines, 2. Other disciplines such as gynecology and urology, offer or routinely perform PSO during abdominal surgery, 3. A better prognosis could be achieved, 4. It has been shown that systemic therapy has limited effects on OM, since ovaria are considered to be 'sanctuary sites', 5. In postmenopausal women negative side effects of PSO are expected to

OBJECTIVE: Characterize current management of osteoporosis risk in BRCA carriers following risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy (RRSO).
METHODS: Women with a BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation who underwent RRSO were identified from a community-based health system in Northern California from 1995 to 2012. Retrospective chart review using the electronic medical record was performed. The primary outcome was the number of women who had a dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry scan post-RRSO. Secondary outcomes included new diagnoses of osteopenia, osteoporosis, and fracture. Information on the following risk fact

Women with risk-reducing bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy (RRBSO) report poorer sexual health than women of a similar age with intact ovaries. Since women with RRBSO lose the ability to make endogenous 17-β-estradiol (E2), open questions include whether: (1) poorer sexual function is associated with E2 loss and (2) exogenous estradiol therapy (ETBSO) is related to amelioration of objective decrements and subjective experiences. We combined online questionnaires with qualitative interviews to explore the sexual function of women with pathogenic variants in the BRCA1/2 genes and RRBSO not taking
