Surgical repair of Salter-Harris type II fracture of the distal humerus: short and long-term outcomes in a case series of three dogs and one cat.

CASE HISTORIES: Three dogs and one cat sustained forelimb trauma and were presented to a university veterinary clinic (Liège, Belgium) and a private veterinary hospital (Beacouzé, France). All four animals were referred for surgery. CLINICAL FINDINGS: Two dogs and the cat were ambulatory on admission but unable to bear weight on the affected limb. One dog was non-ambulatory and lacked voluntary movement and sensation in one forelimb. Salter-Harris type II fractures of the distal humerus were diagnosed by radiography in all cases; avulsion of the brachial plexus and pelvic fractures were also

Post-traumatic Distal Femoral Salter-Harris Type II Fracture Unmasking an Incidental Osteochondroma as a Possible Stress Riser: A Case Report With Surgical Management.

Osteochondromas are the most common benign bone tumors and are frequently discovered incidentally in the metaphyseal regions of long bones during growth. While typically asymptomatic, they may occasionally lead to complications such as neurovascular impingement, mechanical irritation, or pathological fractures. Salter-Harris type II fractures represent the most frequent physeal injuries in pediatric populations, particularly in rapidly growing regions like the distal femur. The simultaneous occurrence of a Salter-Harris type II fracture and an underlying osteochondroma at the same anatomical l

How long does it to achieve sagittal realignment of the displaced epiphysis in Salter-Harris type II distal radial fracture when treated by manual reduction?

This study aimed to investigate how long it takes for the dorsally displaced distal radial epiphysis to achieve realignment. We retrospectively reviewed 56 patients with dorsally displaced Salter-Harris type II distal radial epiphyseal fractures who were aged ≤15 years at the time of injury. All fractures were treated with closed reduction and immobilised using a sugar tong splint for 6 weeks. We evaluated the change in the displaced epiphysis position (%) until 12 weeks and the long-term clinical and radiological outcomes. We analysed significant differences in demographic factors and epiphys

Fixation of proximal humeral Salter-Harris type 1 fractures in a 3-dimensionally printed skeletally immature canine bone model: a biomechanical assessment of fully threaded headless cannulated screws.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the biomechanical stability of 4 fixation techniques for proximal humeral physeal fractures in skeletally immature canines using 3-D-printed models. METHODS: This experimental in vitro study was conducted from September 25, 2025, through April 22, 2026. To strictly control biological variability, identical 3-D-printed models of juvenile canine proximal humeral Salter-Harris type 1 fractures (CT-derived from a 6-month-old 26-kg Labrador Retriever) were evaluated across 4 groups: pin and tension band wire (group A), partially threaded cannulated screw (group B), fully thre

Nonsurgical Rehabilitation Perspectives for a Type I Salter-Harris Fracture With Lipohemarthrosis and Concomitant Grade II Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) Tear in a Volleyball Athlete: A Case Report.

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears represent common occurrences in sports, particularly posing significant risks to young athletes. The diagnostic methods for ACL injury include magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), arthroscopy, and physical examination. Management of this injury can be done both operative and nonoperatively. Pediatric growth plate fractures are classified under the Salter-Harris classification. A 13-year-old male athlete sustained a knee injury during a volleyball match. While landing from a jump after a smash, the athlete directly landed on the ground on his right knee. Afte

The management of Salter-Harris type II fracture with associated posterior sternoclavicular joint displacement using a locking compression plate: A 14-year-old adolescent's case report.

RATIONALE: Posterior sternoclavicular joint dislocations (PSCJDs) are particularly rare injuries, accounting for 3% to 5% of sternoclavicular joint dislocations. With very few cases reported in the literature, these injuries are often misdiagnosed and imaging is not always clear, thus making physicians often unaware of them. The present case report aims to investigate a rare case involving a clavicular Salter-Harris II fracture with associated posterior displacement of the diaphysis, a term coined a "pseudodislocation." PATIENT CONCERNS: We present a case of a 14-year-old adolescent who susta

A More Conservative Approach in the Surgical Management of Pediatric Physeal Ankle Fractures Should be Preferred: Mid to Long-term Functional Outcomes of Three Different Surgical Techniques for Salter-Harris Type II and Triplane Distal Tibial Fractures.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric physeal ankle fractures carry a high risk of complications. This study aimed to (1) investigate the effect of anatomic reduction of the physis on mid to long-term functional outcomes in Salter-Harris type II and triplane distal tibial physeal fractures (DTPFs) and (2) compare the outcomes of 3 different surgical techniques applied in these fractures. METHODS: The database of a single level-I trauma center was retrospectively reviewed for DTPFs between 2012 and 2022. A total of 39 eligible patients with operative Salter-Harris type II and triplane fractures between 2012 a

Approach to Suspected Physeal Fractures in the Emergency Department.

Growth plate (physeal) fractures are defined as a disruption in the cartilaginous physis of bone with or without the involvement of epiphysis or metaphysis. These represent around 15-18% of all pediatric fractures. It is important to diagnose physeal injury as early as possible, as misdiagnosis or delay in diagnosis may result in long term complications. Physeal injuries may not be initially obvious in children who present with periarticular trauma, and a high index of suspicion is important for diagnosis. Differential diagnosis for a Salter-Harris fracture includes a ligamentous sprain, acute

The relative incidence of fractures at the base of the proximal phalanx of the fingers in children.

There is debate regarding the most common fracture type at the base of the proximal phalanx of the fingers in children prior to closure of the epiphysis. In total, 100 consecutive children presenting with 103 fractures were included in a prospective study and their X-rays were reviewed by a consultant musculoskeletal radiologist. The study included 61 boys and 39 girls with a mean age of 10 (range 4-14) years. The most common fracture observed was the juxta-epiphyseal type II fracture (53%), followed by the Salter-Harris type II fracture (26%). Other fractures observed included Salter-Harris t

Ultrasound Secondary Signs for the Diagnosis of Pediatric Distal Forearm Fractures: A Diagnostic Study.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of ultrasound secondary signs of fractures in pediatric patients aged 5-15 y presenting to the emergency department with a clinically non-deformed distal forearm injury. METHODS: This diagnostic study was conducted in South East Queensland, Australia. Emergency clinicians performed point-of-care ultrasound on eligible patients and recorded secondary signs of fractures (pronator quadratus hematoma [PQH] sign, periosteal hematoma, visible angulation) or physeal fractures (fracture-to-physis distance [FPD], physis alteration). The reference standard

Pronation injuries of the ankle in children. Retrospective study of radiographical classification and treatment.

In a retrospective study in children aged 0-18 years, 457 ankle fractures in children were classified traumatologically according to Gerner-Smidt or Lauge-Hansen. Anatomically, ankle fractures with open growth plates were classified according to the Salter-Harris classification. Pronation injuries constituted 18% of the ankle injuries and showed different fracture patterns. In total 83 pronation injuries were found. Of these, 52 showed open growth plates: 25 pronation-abduction, 23 pronation-eversion, and 4 pronation-dorsal flexion injuries. The pronation-abduction injuries were classified int

Distal tibial physeal fractures in children that may require open reduction.

Fractures of the distal end of the tibia in children often involve the physis. They are of particular importance because partial growth arrest can occur and result in angular deformity, limb-length discrepancy, or incongruity of the joint surface (or a combination of these). We evaluated the cases of thirty-two children who had a fracture leading to established partial growth arrest of the distal end of the tibia. Most of this group had had a Salter-Harris Type-III or Type-IV fracture. Twenty-eight of the fractures had been treated by gentle closed reduction and immobilization in a plaster cas
