Laboratory-scale analysis of natural rocks provides petrophysical properties such as density, porosity, pore diameter/pore-throat diameter distribution, and fluid accessibility, in addition to the size and shape of framework grains and their contact relationship with the rock matrix. Different types of laboratory approaches for petrophysical characterization involve the use of a range of sample sizes. While the sample sizes selected should aim to be representative of the rock body, there are inherent limitations imposed by the analytical principles and holding capacities of the different exper

BACKGROUND: Our work was motivated by the need to, given serum availability and/or financial resources, decide on which samples to test in a serum bank for different pathogens. Simulation-based sample size calculations were performed to determine the age-based sampling structures and optimal allocation of a given number of samples for testing across various age groups best suited to estimate key epidemiological parameters (e.g., seroprevalence or force of infection) with acceptable precision levels in a cross-sectional seroprevalence survey.

BACKGROUND: Replication study is a commonly used verification method to filter out false positives in genome-wide association studies (GWAS). If an association can be confirmed in a replication study, it will have a high confidence to be true positive. To design a replication study, traditional approaches calculate power by treating replication study as another independent primary study. These approaches do not use the information given by primary study. Besides, they need to specify a minimum detectable effect size, which may be subjective. One may think to replace the minimum effect size wit

The Quality-Adjusted Time Without Symptoms or Toxicity (Q-TWiST) statistic previously introduced by Glasziou, Simes and Gelber (1990, Statistics in Medicine 9, 1259-1276) combines toxicity, disease-free survival, and overall survival information in assessing the impact of treatments on the lives of patients. This methodology has received positive reviews from clinicians as intuitive and useful, but to date, the variance of this statistic has remained unspecified. We review aspects of the Q-TWiST method for analyzing clinical trial data, extend the method to accommodate multiple treatment arms,

PURPOSE: Accurate perception of food portion sizes is implicated in healthy eating, yet little is known about psychological correlates of portion estimation in non-clinical, normal-weight adults. This exploratory study examined whether consumption intent (self vs other) and markers of psychological processes associated with eating (dietary restraint, shape/weight overvaluation, body dissatisfaction) are associated with portion size estimation errors, and whether these errors relate to body mass index (BMI).
METHODS: Seventy-one adults (BMI 18.5-24.9 kg/m2) without current or past psychiatric

BACKGROUND: Many randomized trials measure a continuous outcome simultaneously at baseline and after taking the drug. For a single continuous post-treatment outcome, the sample size calculation is simple, but if there are assessments at multiple time point post-treatment then this longitudinal data may give more insights by analyzing the data using the repeated measures method. Also, if the sample size is calculated using the single time-point method for longitudinal data, it may lead to a larger than required sample size, increasing the cost and time.
METHODS: In this research, an effort is

OBJECTIVES: Indirect clinical outcome-based analytical performance specifications (APS) may offer a feasible alternative to direct studies but raise questions regarding data requirements and transferability. This study aimed to determine the minimum sample size for simulation-driven APS and to investigate the impact of data origin.
METHODS: We analysed data for six laboratory measurands from four distinct datasets: three Turkish hospitals (Istanbul, Ankara, Van) and the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2017-2020 dataset. Using the 'APS Calculator', we determined AP

The planning of sample size for research studies often focuses on obtaining a significant result given a specified level of power, significance, and an anticipated effect size. This planning requires prior knowledge of the study design and a statistical analysis to calculate the proposed sample size. However, there may not be one specific testable analysis from which to derive power (Silberzahn et al., Advances in Methods and Practices in Psychological Science, 1(3), 337356, 2018) or a hypothesis to test for the project (e.g., creation of a stimuli database). Modern power and sample size plann

Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are widely used for biomedical image classification, yet it remains unclear under which conditions training on reduced subsets of available data can provide reliable guidance during model development, how much training data is required to achieve stable and comparable performance across CNN architectures, and whether increasing the training set size always leads to improved generalization or can sometimes result in degraded performance. We study this question across four biomedical datasets (breast mammography, pediatric chest X-ray, brain tumor MRI, and sk

Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) for movement disorders can greatly benefit from the insights provided by probabilistic mapping. This consists in the application of statistical approaches to stimulation data of multiple patients. Such analysis is influenced by the input data and chosen statistical method, hindering the generalizability of the obtained results. This study aims at determining the minimum sample size yielding stable results, and the statistical approach providing higher results consistency. Intra-operative stimulation test data of 36 patients who underwent DBS surgery for Parkinson's

Intestinal villi are subject to natural variation within the same sample, and there is no established standard for the number of unique measurements needed for reliable histomorphometry in broiler chickens and pigs. Furthermore, intestinal morphology assessment in monogastric animals typically focuses on villus height, crypt depth, and the villus height to crypt depth ratio. However, limited attention has been given to additional morphology indices, such as villus perimeter and area, largely due to the time and resources required for consistent estimates. Therefore, the objectives of this expe

Digital twins in healthcare offer an innovative approach to precision diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment. SynTwin, a novel computational methodology to generate digital twins using synthetic data and network science, has previously shown promise for improving prediction of breast cancer mortality. In this study, we validate SynTwin using population-level data for different cancer types from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) program from the National Cancer Institute (USA). We assess its predictive accuracy across cancer types of varying sample sizes (n = 1,000 to 30,000 r

INTRODUCTION: The planning of effective orthodontic therapy greatly benefits from an understanding of the skeletal maturation and stage of growth of the patients seeking orthodontic treatment. However, the patient's various craniofacial structures have varying levels of growth potential. The patient is exposed to additional radiation when hand-wrist radiographs are regularly used to forecast growth. As an alternative, cervical vertebrae in the lateral cephalograph have been suggested. When arranging orthodontic treatment for growing children, it is important to take into account the pubertal g

Sample size calculations for trials with time-to-event outcomes are usually based on the assumption that an event - prototypically death in survival analysis - occurs only once per sample unit. However, events like changes in disease status or switches between treatment modalities may repeat over time. In trials with such outcomes, standard sample size formulae derived from the classical survival time models are not applicable. Instead, modeling the repeating transition events must precede the actual sample size calculation. Markov chains are an obvious choice to model transitions. Accordingly

Detecting treatment efficacy using cognitive change in trials of cerebral small vessel disease (SVD) has been challenging, making the use of surrogate markers such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) attractive. We determined the sensitivity of MRI to change in SVD and used this information to calculate sample size estimates for a clinical trial. Data from the prospective SCANS (St George’s Cognition and Neuroimaging in Stroke) study of patients with symptomatic lacunar stroke and confluent leukoaraiosis was used (n = 121). Ninety-nine subjects returned at one or more time points. Multimodal M

The objective of this study was to evaluate if the pharmacokinetic (PK) parameters (clearance, volumes of distribution, and half-life) from 1 blood sample per subject using naive pooled data (NPD) analysis can be obtained with reasonable accuracy with a very small sample size (n = 5). For this study, 7 drugs were selected from the literature. The PKs of these 7 drugs were studied in pediatrics, and plasma concentrations versus time data for individual subjects from extensive blood sampling were available. For this analysis, only 5 subjects were chosen, and each subject gave 1 blood sample. The
