Does access to improved sanitation reduce childhood diarrhea in rural India?

Almost nine million children under 5 years of age die every year. Diarrhea is considered to be the second leading cause of under-five mortality in developing countries. About one out of five deaths is caused by diarrhea. In this paper, we use the newly available data set District Level Household Survey 3 to quantify the impact of access to improved sanitation on diarrheal morbidity for children less than 5 years of age in India. Using propensity score matching, we find that access to improved sanitation reduces the risk of contracting diarrhea by 2.2 percentage points. There is considerable he…

Anaerobic digestion potential for ecological and decentralised sanitation in urban areas.

The potential of anaerobic digestion in ecological and decentralised sanitation has been investigated in this research. Different anaerobic digestion systems were proposed for the treatment of sewage, grey water, black water and faeces. Moreover, mathematical models based on anaerobic digestion model no.1 (ADM1) were developed for determination of a suitable design for each system. For stable performance of an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor treating sewage, the model results indicated that optimisation of wastewater conversion to biogas (not COD removal) should be selected for …

Watershed urbanization and sanitation as predictors of microplastic contamination in stream sediments.

Urbanization represents a major land-use change with substantial impacts on stream ecosystems. Urban streams are exposed to a wide range of contaminants, including microplastics (MPs), which enter these systems primarily through wastewater and stormwater runoff. However, the effects of urbanization and sanitation coverage on MPs accumulation in subtropical streams remain poorly understood. This study examined the influence of urbanization intensity and sanitation coverage on MP accumulation in sediments from 16 urban streams across five cities in Uruguay, representing a gradient of urbanizatio…

Fate of Clostridium estertheticum in biofilms and in response to conventional and novel sanitizers.

Blown pack spoilage (BPS) is a major concern to the meat industry and is primarily caused by Clostridium estertheticum, a psychrophilic spore-forming, anaerobic bacterium. We investigated the survival mechanisms of C. estertheticum and the efficacy of various sanitizers against C. estertheticum spores. When cultured alone or with Pseudomonas poae at 10°C in a biofilm reactor, viable C. estertheticum vegetative cells were recovered only sporadically from stainless steel coupons. However, they were consistently and constantly recovered from planktonic cultures under various conditions for up to

Antimicrobial chitosan-based hydrogels: A novel approach to obtain sanitizers.

The study presents novel hydrogels obtained by crosslinking chitosan with both furfural and glutaraldehyde via dynamic imine bonds. Scanning electron microscopy confirmed the formation of porous networks with a mean diameter of the pores between 15 and 35 μm, while the supramolecular characterization by polarized optical microscopy and wide-angle X-ray diffraction proved the gelation mechanism. The hydrogels presented great rheological properties, along with an anti-creep behavior. The resulting materials were highly adhesive and had great antioxidant activity, leading to an inhibition of 78 %

Self-Sanitizing Polycaprolactone Electrospun Nanofiber Membrane with Ag Nanoparticles.

The objective of this research was to develop an environment-friendly and scalable method for the production of self-sanitizing electrospun nanofibers. This was achieved by immobilizing silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) onto plasma-treated surfaces of biodegradable polycaprolactone (PCL) nanofibers. The plasma deposited polymer layer containing carboxyl groups played a critical role in providing a uniform distribution of Ag NPs on the nanofiber surface. Ag ions were absorbed by electrostatic interaction and then reduced under the action of UV-light. The concentration and release of Ag ions were an

Sanitizing Hatching Eggs with Essential Oils: Avian and Microbiological Safety.

Increased meat and egg production leads to concomitant changes in poultry practices, including the indiscriminate use of formaldehyde to sanitize hatching eggs. Although this sanitizer aids in the increase in poultry production, its toxic potential for man and for avian embryos represents an obstacle to its long-term use. This review assesses whether essential oils fit into the context of hatching egg contamination, reviewing their antimicrobial efficiency, toxicity to poultry embryos and chicks, and their sanitizing effects on poultry production parameters. Studies have indicated that, becaus

Allergenic Ingredients in Health Care Hand Sanitizers in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Health care workers with occupational contact dermatitis often attribute their symptoms to frequent use of alcohol-based hand sanitizers. However, ingredient lists are difficult to obtain, and safe alternatives typically must accommodate brands utilized by a particular hospital system. OBJECTIVE: The aims of this study were to investigate allergenic ingredients present within health care hand sanitizers and to provide a comprehensive product list to assist with allergen avoidance. METHODS: Five major hospitals in Minnesota and 20 hospitals across the United States were called to

Hand Sanitizers: A Review on Formulation Aspects, Adverse Effects, and Regulations.

Hand hygiene is of utmost importance as it may be contaminated easily from direct contact with airborne microorganism droplets from coughs and sneezes. Particularly in situations like pandemic outbreak, it is crucial to interrupt the transmission chain of the virus by the practice of proper hand sanitization. It can be achieved with contact isolation and strict infection control tool like maintaining good hand hygiene in hospital settings and in public. The success of the hand sanitization solely depends on the use of effective hand disinfecting agents formulated in various types and forms suc

Bentonite Clay: A Potential Natural Sanitizer for Preventing Neurological Disorders.

SARS-CoV-2 is a positive stranded-RNA human viral pathogen that attacks the central nervous system (CNS), causing interminable diseases. Although alcohol-based hand sanitizers (ABHS) control the widespread transmission of such pathogens through dermal contact, excessive exposure to alcohol mists and vapors causes CNS disorders, apart from skin infections and negative impacts on the useful microbiome. Herein, we propose bentonite paste, which interacts strongly with different +RNA viruses such as SARS-CoV-2/poliovirus, for dermal sanitization. Repeated hand cleansing with bentonite paste not on

Considering water, sanitation, and hygiene as a valuable component of harm reduction.

Harm reduction strategies effectively minimize the immediate health consequences of drug use, such as syringe exchange and overdose prevention. However, the critical role of access to adequate Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) services in mitigating these consequences remains underemphasized. This paper argues for the consideration of WASH services as an essential framework within the ongoing evolution of harm reduction, particularly for marginalized people who use drugs (PWUD) facing housing insecurity and limited access to public infrastructure. Lack of access to WASH services forces PWU…
