A patient initially presented in 1988 with a solitary axillary mass, diagnosed as a high-grade neuroendocrine spindle-cell neoplasm; there was no history of a primary cutaneous malignancy. After subsequent development of a pulmonary nodule in 2001 (14-years post initial diagnosis), the case was reviewed and the possibility of metastatic melanoma was raised. The histopathologic and immunohistochemical profile of this melanocytic neoplasm was diagnostic of clear cell sarcoma (CCS) of tendons and aponeuroses, although the differential diagnosis included malignant melanoma, follicular dendritic an

Clear cell sarcoma-like tumor of the gastrointestinal tract (CCSGT) is a rare, aggressive tumor with many histological mimickers. Herein, we have documented our experience of three cases of CCSGT and reviewed the literature. The index cases were identified in male patients in their twenties, one in jejunum and two in the distal colon. Histomorphological examination revealed the characteristic heterogeneous histomorphology with patchy immunohistochemical positivity with S100 protein and negative melanocytic markers. The fluorescence in-situ hybridization test showed translocation of the EWSR1 (

Clear cell sarcoma (CCS) is a rare tumor classically associated with the tendons and aponeuroses of distal extremities of young adults. CCS and malignant melanoma (MM) share immunohistochemical profiles and ultrastructural features, but classic CCS has characteristic morphology with low mitotic activity and minimal pleomorphism. Occasional cases show pleomorphism, high mitotic index, and/or melanin pigmentation, making CCS indistinguishable from MM based on morphology. However, CCS is genetically distinct owing to its consistent association with a t(12;22)(q13;q12) chromosomal translocation, l

PURPOSE: Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) is a receptor tyrosine kinase overexpressed in a variety of human malignancies, against which targeted therapies have shown efficacy in lung and brain tumors. Clinical responses to EGFR inhibitors have been found to be highly dependent on the presence of activating mutations, whereas gene amplification, downstream activation of Akt, and abnormalities in PTEN are also reported predictive factors. We sought to evaluate these variables in pediatric renal tumors.
EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: We screened a series of 307 pediatric renal tumors for EGFR expre

Clear cell sarcoma (CCS) is a rare sarcoma that typically arises in the deep soft tissue of the extremities. We describe two patients with molecularly confirmed CCS in genital skin. Patient 1 was a 22-year-old woman with a vulvar mass, and Patient 2 was a 25-year-old man with a scrotal plaque. Histopathological examination in each case revealed a cellular tumor distributed in nests and sheets, composed of epithelioid and spindled cells. The tumor cells exhibited clear and eosinophilic cytoplasm, vesicular nuclei, and prominent nucleoli. Immunohistochemical analysis demonstrated that both tumor

Clear-cell sarcoma is a rare, malignant soft tissue tumor that displays melanocytic differentiation with a distinct molecular profile. It is rarely localized in the gastrointestinal tract. Herein we reported a case of multiple synchronous clear-cell sarcomas of the gastrointestinal tract with parotid gland metastasis. A 51-year-old male patient presented with a growing painless mass under the right ear. A preoperative positron emission tomography/computed tomography showed multiple intestinal masses and a mass in the right parotid with increased glucose uptake, and he underwent operative treat

Clear cell sarcoma of the kidney is an uncommon pediatric renal malignancy with metastatic potential and marked morphologic heterogeneity. The anaplastic variant is rare and may mimic other high-grade pediatric renal tumors, resulting in diagnostic challenges in limited pretreatment biopsy specimens. A 3-year-old girl presented with progressive abdominal distension. Imaging showed a 15-cm right retroperitoneal mass with tumor thrombus in the inferior vena cava and no distant metastasis. Pretreatment core needle biopsy showed a highly pleomorphic malignant neoplasm with necrosis and fibrous-to-

Clear cell sarcoma (CCS) is a rare and aggressive soft-tissue sarcoma that arises most commonly in adolescents and young adults of both sexes. CCS presents a diagnostic challenge due to its morphological and immunohistochemical similarity to malignant melanoma. We present a rare and severe case of CCS simultaneously with multiple bone and lymph node metastases at the time of initial diagnosis in a previously healthy 15-year-old Chinese man. Detailed information on clinical manifestations, laboratory profiles, histopathological findings and poor outcome were described. The cytomorphology of bon

BACKGROUND: Clear cell sarcoma is a very rare malignant tumor originating from neural crest cells, the tumor most commonly affects the lower limbs but there have been few cases reported to affect the trunk and para spinal area. Patients with Para spinal sarcoma have a variety of clinical presentations and a variable prognosis depending on several prognostic factors including tumor size.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 14-year-old male patient presented with paraplegia for one month duration and he was diagnosed later on to have a paraspinal clear cell sarcoma at D12-L1 level. A wide local excision was m

Clear cell sarcoma (CCS) is a rare malignant soft tissue tumor originating from neural crest cells. Histologically resembling malignant melanoma but lacking cutaneous precursor lesions, CCS is characterized by a specific chromosomal translocation (t[12;22][q13;q12]). Primarily affecting young adults, this tumor typically arises in the extremities, especially the knee, foot, and ankle. To our knowledge, distal toe involvement is uncommon. Herein, we present a case initially diagnosed on magnetic resonance imaging as a superficial soft tissue tumor resembling malignant melanoma but subsequently

Clear cell sarcoma (CCS) is a type of malignant tumor that can arise from tendons and aponeuroses. This malignant proliferation of cells with melanocytic lineage normally occurs in young patients, and it is normally identified in extremities. However, different sites including gastrointestinal organs are also described. Due difficulties in the molecular and histopathology evaluation, the diagnosis is often confused with malignant melanoma. Most cases are treated with surgical resection, but overall, the prognosis is poor. In this editorial, we will discuss a very interesting case of CCS identi

BACKGROUND: Although clear cell sarcoma of kidney (CCSK) is rare, it is the second most common renal tumor in children after Wilms' tumor. NWTS and SIOP are two major groups which had made tremendous efforts on renal tumors, but the strategies are different, for NWTS follows the upfront surgery principle providing definite pathology and the SIOP follows the upfront chemotherapy principle, each has its own advantages. Here we aimed to evaluate the outcomes of CCSK in China following NWTS strategies to analyze the prognostic factors.
METHODS: For this multicenter retrospective study, a total of

Clear cell sarcoma (CCS) of tendons and aponeuroses, also known as melanoma of soft parts, represents an aggressive rare malignancy that is characterized by a nested or fascicular pattern of spindled cells and a pathognomonic reciprocal translocation, t(12;22)(q13;q12), that results in the fusion of EWSR1 and ATF1 genes. Numerous recent studies have recognized the importance of a cutaneous CCS variant that can mimic a broad spectrum of entities, including spindle cell melanoma, spindle cell squamous carcinoma, cutaneous leiomyosarcoma and atypical fibroxanthoma. We report a case of a 13-year-o

Cytogenetic analysis performed on a specimen from an inguinal lymph node metastasis of a tumor diagnosed initially as a cutaneous malignant melanoma revealed the following karyotype: 50,XX, +2, +7, +8, +8, t(12;22) (q13;q12). The finding of t(12;22) (q13;q12), an abnormality specific of clear cell sarcoma of tendons and aponeuroses (CCS), prompted reanalysis of histologic slides, and a final diagnosis of CCS was made. Our case illustrates the usefulness of cytogenetic analysis in the differential diagnosis of CCS and malignant melanoma. In addition, extra copies of chromosomes 8, 7, and 2, pre

Malignant gastrointestinal neuroectodermal tumor (M-GNET) and clear cell sarcoma (CCS) of soft tissue represent closely related, extremely rare, malignant mesenchymal neoplasm of uncertain differentiation. Both entities are characterized genetically by the same molecular alterations represented by the presence of EWSR1-ATF1 and, more rarely, EWSR1-CREB1 fusion genes. The latter translocation seems to be more represented in M-GNET that, despite significant morphologic overlap with CCS, tends to lack overt features of melanocytic differentiation. Most M-GNET occur in the lower gastrointestinal t

Clear cell sarcoma-like tumor of the gastrointestinal tract (CCSLGT) is a rare malignant neoplasm arising within the wall of the small bowel, stomach, or large bowel, predominantly in children and young adults. It is an aggressive tumor with a high rate of local recurrence, metastases, and early death from disease. Histologically, it is composed of relatively monomorphic ovoid or round cells with clear to eosinophilic cytoplasm, arranged in sheets and sometimes papillary or alveolar architectures, often with CD68-positive osteoclast-like giant cells in variable numbers, and is associated with
