Extraskeletal Ewing's sarcoma presenting with pulmonary embolism.

Small round cell tumours with the morphologic characteristics of Ewing's sarcoma arise rarely in soft tissues of the extremities, retroperitoneum, chest and orbit. Patients usually present with symptoms arising from the swelling at the primary site. We report on a patient with a retroperitoneal extraskeletal Ewing's sarcoma who presented with massive tumour embolism to the pulmonary vasculature. To our knowledge, this is the first report of extraskeletal Ewing's sarcoma presenting with pulmonary tumour embolism.

Malignant bone tumors of the chest wall.

Malignant bone tumors constitute only 0.2% of all tumors. Bone sarcomas occur at a rate approximately one tenth that of sarcomas of the soft tissue. Malignant bone tumors of the chest wall and sternum are even more rare because most bone tumors occur in the long bones or joints. Because of the relative paucity of experience treating these malignancies, progress in successful therapies has been limited. Chondrosarcomas remain the most common bony malignant chest wall lesions and are discussed elsewhere in this issue. Other lesions in descending order of incidence include Ewing's sarcoma, osteos

Myeloid sarcoma of the small bowel associated with a CBFbeta/MYH11 fusion and inv(16)(p13q22): a case report.

This report describes a case of aleukaemic myeloid sarcoma of the small intestine in a 50-year-old woman presenting with small bowel obstruction. Fluorescence in situ hybridisation analysis of interphase nuclei revealed a split CBFbeta signal, consistent with an underlying inversion of chromosome 16, inv(16)(p13q22). The resultant type A CBFbeta/MYH11 transcript was detected by reverse transcriptase PCR. Immunohistochemistry with the AH107 antibody to the CBFbeta-SMMHC chimeric protein showed strong nuclear staining of the tumour cell nuclei. This represents the first use of this antibody in t

Extra Skeletal Ewing's Sarcoma Involving Perineum of a Young Male Patient.

Ewing's Sarcoma is the second most common primary malignant bone tumor in children and young adults after osteosarcoma but exceptionally it can arise from extra skeletal sites also. Extra skeletal Ewing's sarcoma is of neuroectodermal origin and usually involves extremities, retroperitoneum and paravertebral regions. No case of extra skeletal Ewing's sarcoma involving perineum is yet reported. A 16 years old male patient admitted to colorectal surgery department of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), Dhaka, Bangladesh in July 2015 having swellings in perineum as well as both i

Ewing sarcoma with extensive neural differentiation: a clinicopathologic, immunohistochemical, and molecular analysis of three cases.

OBJECTIVES: Three patients with Ewing sarcomas showing extensive neural differentiation are presented. METHODS: The patients were two women and one man between the ages of 15 and 35 years. Anatomically, one tumor was in the lung, one in the testis, and one in the cervix uteri. The symptoms were determined by the location of the neoplasm and included respiratory symptoms, testicular pain, and pelvic manifestations, respectively. Complete surgical resection of the tumors was performed. RESULTS: Histologically, all neoplasms showed similar characteristics-namely, a neoplastic cellular prolifera

Factor-XIIIa-expressing dermal dendrocytes in Kaposi's sarcoma. A comparison between classical and immunosuppression-associated types.

The histogenetic origin of Kaposi's sarcoma is a matter of controversy, with recent reports claiming it to derive from the factor-XIIIa-positive dermal dendrocyte rather than endothelial cells. We investigated the potential role of factor-XIIIa-positive dermal dendrocytes in the genesis of both classical (endemic) and immunosuppression-associated Kaposi's sarcoma. Thirteen cases of classical and 16 cases of immunosuppression (mostly AIDS)-associated Kaposi's sarcoma were immunostained with antibodies to factor XIIIa and to the blood-group antigen H, recognizing endothelial cells. Factor-XIIIa-

Primary intracranial Ewing-like sarcoma presenting with rapid bilateral blindness: A case report.

Primary intracranial Ewing sarcoma / Ewing-like sarcoma is an exceptionally rare malignant small round cell tumor. Its radiological appearance is often non-specific and may mimic other aggressive intracranial neoplasms, leading to diagnostic delay. We report the case of a young adult presenting with progressive headaches and recurrent generalized tonic-clonic seizures for six months, followed by rapid bilateral visual loss. Neurological examination revealed papilledema and decreased visual acuity, prompting brain imaging. MRI demonstrated a large aggressive frontal mass with heterogeneous enha

[Immunoblastic sarcoma (reticulum-cell sarcoma) of the gastro-intestinal tract in a case of dermatitis herpetiformis Duhring (author's transl)].

In a 43-year-old man who for 20 years was known to have dermatitis herpetiformis there co-existed, since 1974, a "dermatogenic enteropathy" with gastro-intestional symptoms. Several small-intestine biopsies demonstrated severe partial to subtotal villous atrophy with crypt hyperplasia, as seen in gluten-sensitive enteropathy. At post-mortem there was an immunoblastic sarcoma - so-called reticulum-cell sarcoma - in the upper jejunum and abdominal lymph-nodes, which was presumably the immediate complication of the sprue-like lesions of the small intestines.

Histiocytic sarcoma with interdigitating dendritic cell differentiation: a case report with fine needle aspiration cytology and review of literature.

A hybrid histiocytic sarcoma-interdigitating dendritic cell sarcoma was found in a small perinephric lymph node of an asymptomatic 80-year-old man, who presented a year ago with two small foci of lung metastasis found during routine chest X-ray. Fine needle aspiration cytology demonstrated interconnecting long and thin cell processes radiating from dendrite-like neoplastic cells with oval, enlongated, reniform, and irregular nuclei with vesicular chromatin and distinct nucleoli. Histology showed spindled epitheliod and histiocytic cells with abundant, slightly eosinophilic cytoplasm with indis

CIC fusion-positive sarcoma of the spermatic cord.

In addition to germ cell tumors and tumors of the sex cord stroma, the WHO classification of testis and paratesticular tumors also contains malignant soft tissue tumors. Among them, liposarcomas of the spermatic cord are the most common entities. Other mesenchymal tumors with smooth muscle, skeletal muscle, fibroblastic/myofibroblastic, or nerve sheath differentiation are rare. Ewing sarcoma is composed of uniform small round cells and typically characterized by translocations of the EWSR1 gene. In rare cases, Ewing sarcoma-like tumors lack an EWSR1 gene fusion. Some of these tumors harbor a s

Esophageal extraskeletal neoplasm Ewing's sarcoma: Case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Ewing sarcomas are a group of small round cell tumors that occur predominantly in the long bones as well as in extraosseous locations such as the extremities, trunk, and retroperitoneum (Gier, 1997) [2]. Extraosseous Ewing sarcoma (EES) is a type of small round cell tumor that occurs in soft tissues. I rare cases, EES occurs in the esophagus (Maesawa et al., 2002; Johnson et al., 2010) [1,3]. Ewing's sarcoma is a rare and highly aggressive cancer most frequently arising in people under 20 years of age. We report an uncommon case of primary paraesophageal Ewing's sa

Osteosarcoma pleural effusion: A diagnostic challenge with some cytologic hints.

Pleural effusions can be the first manifestation, recurrence, or metastasis of small round cell sarcomas in children. The most common are Ewing sarcoma, neuroblastoma, and rhabdomyosarcoma. The cytomorphology is variable, the cells can be cohesive, single cells, small or large, morphologically mimicking lymphomas, carcinomas, melanomas, and mesothelioma depending on the sarcoma involved. Osteosarcomas are rare. Their rarity, variable histomorphologic features, immunophenotypic heterogeneity, being of osseous or extraosseous origin and focality of malignant osteoid matrix make their cytologic r

Fine needle aspiration cytology of undifferentiated small cell ("anaplastic") hepatoblastoma. A case report.

Cytologic features of a rare case of small cell undifferentiated ("anaplastic") hepatoblastoma are presented. The tumor cells were primitive and closely resembled the group of "small blue cell" pediatric neoplasms--neuroblastoma, lymphoma, Ewing's sarcoma and rhabdomyosarcoma. This particular subtype of hepatoblastoma is the least common and is associated with the worst prognosis.

Cutaneous granulocytic sarcoma in myelodysplastic syndrome.

Granulocytic sarcoma is an extramedullary tumor of immature cells of granulocytic series, generally associated to acute myelogenous leukemia. The skin is one of the most commonly affected sites. Granulocytic sarcoma can complicate myelodysplastic syndromes and is considered a sign of poor prognosis. They are often misdiagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma of the lymphoblastic type, Burkitt lymphoma and large cell lymphoma. In children, the differential diagnoses also include small, round cell tumors. It is important to diagnose these lesions early because they can precede peripheral blood and bon

Angiography in reticulum cell sarcoma.

Angiography was performed in 14 patients with reticulum cell sarcoma. When located in the retroperitoneal tissues, the spleen or the pancreas, the tumor is hypervascular with encasement of arteries and compression or invasion of veins. Tumors of the kidneys may have a similar appearance. A gastric tumor displays slight abnormalities, mainly hypervascularity, the lesion being better demonstrated by barium examination. A case of reticulum cell sarcoma in the small bowel demonstrated arterial encasement and arteriovenous shunting.

A Periadrenal Gland Ewing Sarcoma With Extensive Posttreatment Ganglioneuroblastoma-Like Morphology in an Adult Patient.

Neuroblastoma and Ewing sarcoma are two round cell malignancies that can exhibit light microscopic overlap and potentially arise in the same anatomic location, leading to diagnostic uncertainty. Neoadjuvant chemotherapy-induced cytodifferentiation/maturation is a common feature in pediatric malignancies, whereas Ewing sarcomas often exhibit variable degrees of necrosis, inflammatory infiltrates, and stromal fibrosis after neoadjuvant treatment. Posttreatment neuroblastoma-like morphologic changes have been rarely reported in pediatric Ewing sarcoma. Herein, we report a 33-year-old man with a r
