Serological Survey of West Nile Virus in Pet Dogs from Saskatchewan, Canada.

Serum samples collected from 143 dogs from Saskatchewan, Canada, between 2008 and 2010 were evaluated for seroprevalence of West Nile virus (WNV). WNV antibodies were identified in 40/143 dogs (28%). Dogs that were primarily housed in the yard were 6.2 times (95% confidence interval [CI] 2.6-14.5) more likely to have antibodies than dogs housed in the house or garage. Dogs were more likely to be positive with increasing time spent outside. The results of this study document WNV seroprevalence in dogs from Saskatchewan and suggest that pet dogs might be useful as a sentinel species for WNV surv

Predictive risk mapping of West Nile virus (WNV) infection in Saskatchewan horses.

The objective of this study was to develop a model using equine data from geographically limited surveillance locations to predict risk categories for West Nile virus (WNV) infection in horses in all geographic locations across the province of Saskatchewan. The province was divided geographically into low-, medium-, or high-risk categories for WNV, based on available serology information from 923 horses obtained through 4 studies of WNV infection in horse populations in Saskatchewan. Discriminant analysis was used to build models using the observed risk of WNV in horses and geographic division

Case-control study investigating an anthrax outbreak in Saskatchewan, Canada--Summer 2006.

In 2006, an outbreak of anthrax in Saskatchewan affected several species but most of the losses occurred in cattle. Potential risk factors contributing to this outbreak were investigated through questionnaires involving 117 case farms and 259 control farms geographically representative of the Saskatchewan beef herd. The occurrence of flooding [odds ratio (OR) = 3.4; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.8 to 6.4], wetter pastures (Good: OR = 3.5; 95% CI: 1.4 to 8.5; Wet: OR = 7.2; 95% CI: 2.9 to 18.1), shorter pasture grass length (OR = 3.0; 95% CI: 1.4 to 6.4), and higher density of the animals on

Predicting geographical human risk of West Nile virus--Saskatchewan, 2003 and 2007.

OBJECTIVES: To detail the use of a model to predict areas of low, medium, and high risk of West Nile virus (WNV) in humans in both 2003 and 2007 in the province of Saskatchewan. To identify consistent high-risk areas from year to year as well as important environmental variables within those high-risk areas. METHODS: The number of laboratory-confirmed WNV individuals was obtained from Saskatchewan Health by rural municipality. The population at risk was obtained from Statistics Canada by rural municipality. Climate and habitat variables were incorporated into a discriminant analysis model wit

Long-term survival rates among patients with cancer in Saskatchewan, 1967-1986.

We calculated relative survival rates from 5 to 15 years after diagnosis for cancer cases diagnosed in Saskatchewan, Canada, between 1967 and 1986. Cancers with high 15-year relative survival (greater than 60%) included lip, melanoma among women, other male genital sites, and corpus uteri. As anticipated, relative survival rates declined with increasing length of follow-up, with the largest relative declines noted among those in the oldest age group (65+ years). Only small declines in relative survival were noted for cancers of the colon and cervix with increasing length of follow-up. Improved

Surveillance of Babesia odocoilei in wild and farmed cervid populations of Saskatchewan, Canada.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether Babesia odocoilei could be detected from farmed and wild cervid diagnostic submissions prior to its first reported occurrence in Saskatchewan. PROCEDURE: Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for B. odocoilei was used to survey 85 fresh-frozen samples and 112 formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded samples from Saskatchewan cervids submitted for necropsy between 2000 and 2014. RESULTS: The PCR was positive for B. odocoilei in 1/84 white-tailed deer, 1/41 moose, 0/37 mule deer, and 1/35 elk. The positive elk was from a farmed herd, but the remaining 2 positive samples we

A case of disseminated blastomycosis with pulmonary, genitourinary, and osteoarticular involvement in southern Saskatchewan.

Although southern Saskatchewan is not known to be a region endemic to blastomycosis, we present a case of disseminated blastomycosis in a 39-year-old man with pulmonary, genitourinary, and osteoarticular involvement. The patient presented with persistent fevers despite recent antibiotic therapy, arthritis in his left foot, and urinary obstruction. A computed tomography (CT) scan of the chest revealed a diffuse miliary pattern. A transbronchial biopsy only showed granulomatous changes, and washings were negative for fungal culture. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the left foot revealed sign

A case of necrotizing fasciitis due to Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype 5 in Saskatchewan.

Necrotizing fasciitis due to Streptococcus pneumoniae is a rare and grave condition, and only a few cases have been reported. Suggested risk factors include minor trauma, systemic lupus erythematosus, immunosuppression secondary to medication, use of intramuscular anti-inflammatories and alcoholism. A fatal case of pneumococcal necrotizing fasciitis that occurred in a 51-year-old woman with a history of alcohol abuse and oral anti-inflammatory use is presented. Her condition was caused by a multi-etiology outbreak of community-acquired pneumonia, from which S pneumoniae serotype 5 was also iso

Geotoxicology of multiple sclerosis: the Henribourg, Saskatchewan, Cluster Focus. I. The water.

Some childhood-related, geographically-linked factor predisposes towards (or protects against) multiple sclerosis (MS). It is quite plausible that this factor could be one or more chemicals in the environment, and that chemical study of the environment or "focus" of an MS cluster might maximize the chances of detecting such an etiological link. The water chemistry of such a focus (Henribourg, Saskatchewan) was compared with North American norms, and with the chemistry of water from a nearby control area with a near-zero incidence of MS and of childhood homes of MS cases. Overall, the results s

De novo adolescent gastric carcinoma: a first case report in Saskatchewan, Canada.

Adolescent gastric cancers are extremely rare with a reported incidence of 0.05-0.10% in North America. We present a de novo case of gastric carcinoma in a 17-year-old teenager with no concomitant family history or risk factors. His main clinical presentation included anaemia and melaena stools. Despite an extensive clinical workup that included a diagnostic laparoscopy, the tumour was deemed surgically irresectable, and he was started on a palliative chemotherapy protocol at the local paediatric oncology centre. He demised 7 months later. This is the first recorded case of an adolescent gastr

Pathology of ocular lesions in free-living moose (Alces alces) from Saskatchewan.

Clinical signs of impaired vision or neurological disease occurred in seven of 74 free-living moose (Alces alces) from Saskatchewan, Canada, submitted for necropsy between 1969 and 1994. Several lesions were found in each eye, including retinal degeneration (seven cases), cataract (six cases), lymphocytic-plasmacytic anterior uveitis (six cases), corneal scars (six cases), keratitis (four cases), and microphthalmia (one case), but their cause was not determined. Moraxella bovis was isolated from the cornea of one moose. Lesions in the brain and spinal cord were mild or absent.

Prospective determination of heat shock protein serum levels in Saskatchewan women during pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: The stress proteins, heat shock protein 27, heat shock protein 70, and αB-crystallin, have all been detected in human serum under normal and disease conditions. Heat shock protein 70 serum levels are known to increase in women with advancing pregnancy, but heat shock protein 27, heat shock protein 70, and αB-crystallin have never been assessed prospectively in pregnancy and labor. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the serum levels of heat shock protein 27, heat shock protein 70, and αB-crystallin in women during pregnancy to assess whether the levels increase significantly

Associations between Housing Factors and Respiratory Symptoms in Two Saskatchewan First Nations Communities.

Inadequate housing is commonplace in First Nations in Canada, often leading to environmental impacts on housing such as dampness and mold. First Nations communities suffer from a higher prevalence of respiratory-related health conditions than the general Canadian population. There is limited Canadian literature evaluating the relationship between housing factors and the respiratory health of adults within First Nations communities. This study was undertaken with two Saskatchewan First Nations communities. The study population consisted of 293 individuals within 131 households. The individuals

Diagnosis and high incidence of hyperornithinemia-hyperammonemia-homocitrullinemia (HHH) syndrome in northern Saskatchewan.

Mutations in the SLC25A15 gene, encoding the human inner mitochondrial membrane ornithine transporter, are thought to be responsible for hyperornithinemia-hyperammonemia-homocitrullinemia (HHH) syndrome, a rare autosomal recessive condition. HHH syndrome has been detected in several small, isolated communities in northern Saskatchewan (SK). To determine the incidence of HHH syndrome in these communities, a PCR method was set up to detect F188Δ, the common French-Canadian mutation. Neonatal blood spots collected from all newborns from the high risk area were genotyped for the F188Δ mutation for
