Snapping scapula syndrome caused by subscapular osteochondroma.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to evaluate the results of surgical excisions of subscapular exostoses which caused snapping scapula syndrome. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between September 1980 and January 2010 30 patients with scapular osteochondromas which caused snapping, were treated surgically in our clinic. Fifteen patients (9 males, 6 females; mean age 15.6 years; range 6 to 29 years) in whom we were able to contact following treatment were clinically evaluated. The mean follow-up was 13.7 years (range 1 to 31 years). The initial examination included radiographs and computed tomography. The clin

Scapula free flap for complex maxillofacial reconstruction.

INTRODUCTION: Composite tissue defects of the mandible and maxilla, after resection of head and neck malignancies, osteoradionecrosis, malformations, or traumas, cause functional and aesthetic problems. Nowadays, microvascular free flaps represent the main choice for the reconstruction of these defects. Among the various flaps proposed, the scapula flap has favorable characteristics that make it suitable for bone, soft tissue, or combined defects. MATERIALS: We report 7 cases of reconstruction of complex maxillofacial defects with subscapular system flaps. The patients treated had Romberg syn

Multiple trauma and scapula fractures: so what?

UNLABELLED: BACKGROUND Scapula fractures are rare and are presumed to indicate severe underlying trauma. We studied injury patterns and overall outcome in patients with multiple injuries with scapula fractures. METHODS: We carried out a retrospective review of patients with multiple injuries (Injury Severity Score [ISS] > or = 16) with chest and musculoskeletal injuries admitted to our institution between 1993 and 1999 to investigate whether the presence of a scapula fracture is a marker of increased morbidity and mortality. RESULTS: There were 1,164 patients admitted with multiple trauma. S

Scapula position test reliability and comparisons of scapula position and shoulder function among individuals with and without adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.

BACKGROUND: An evaluation of scapula position is important to predict spine curvature and shoulder function in patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). Therefore, a reliable scapula position is required to assess posture in patients with AIS. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the reliabilities of scapula position tests and differences in scapula position and shoulder function between individuals with and without AIS. METHODS: The study compared 18 patients with AIS and 18 healthy controls to identify differences in scapula position and shoulder function. The acromion-table dista

The usefulness of a three-dimensional printed segmental scapula prosthesis for recovering shoulder function in a patient with scapula chondrosarcoma: A case report.

RATIONALE: Localized chondrosarcoma of the scapula has a favorable long-term survival outcome. Therefore, recovery of shoulder function after surgery is important in middle-aged patients. Currently, three-dimensional (3-D) printing implants can be applied for personalized limb salvage surgery. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 41-year-old woman with a palpable scapular area presented with shoulder pain for 3 months, which was aggravated during shoulder exercise. DIAGNOSES: Chondrosarcoma at left scapular (Malawer S1, Enniking II B, and grade II chondrosarcoma). INTERVENTIONS: Wide excision for a localize

Recurrent low-energy intrathoracic dislocation of the scapula.

Dislocation of the scapula is a rare disorder. The nomenclature in the literature can be confusing as a result of nonspecific terms such as locked scapula and dislocated scapula when referring to both intra- and extra-thoracic dislocations. After a thorough review of the literature we further define and classify scapular dislocations to better understand prognosis and patient education. We report a case of a low-energy intrathoracic dislocation of the scapula due to anomalous anatomy. Similar to another reported case in the literature, we have been able to document recurrence of intrathoracic

Chondrosarcoma of the scapula: long-term oncologic outcome.

BACKGROUND: Chondrosarcoma is the second most common primary sarcoma of bone. It often develops within flat bones, such as the pelvis, ribs, and scapula. In the current study, the authors reviewed the surgical experience and long-term oncologic outcomes of patients with chondrosarcoma arising in the scapula. METHODS: The medical records of 29 consecutive patients with chondrosarcoma of the scapula were reviewed. The patients were treated between 1954 and 1994. All patients had localized disease at the time of presentation. The tumors were classified histologically as Grade 1 (10 patients), Gr

The forgotten scapula fracture: Challenges in delayed presentation.

Scapula fracture is an uncommon high-velocity injury often missed in a polytrauma setting. Most are managed conservatively. Operative management is indicated in select situations, though there are no guidelines currently available to help make such a decision. Surgery is challenging due to the rarity of scapular fractures, their complex anatomy, the need for specialized implants and the technical skill required for such fixation. In the case of neglected scapular fractures, these issues are further exacerbated by the patient's delayed presentation. A thorough knowledge of anatomy is required t

Scapula fractures: functional anatomy, clinical assessment and management.

Fractures of the scapula are rare injuries, accounting for 3-5% of all shoulder girdle fractures. They are frequently the result of high energy trauma and often present with concurrent and life-threatening injuries to adjacent structures, leading to significant morbidity and mortality. Patients presenting with scapula fractures must receive a thorough and systematic clinical assessment as directed by national trauma guidelines. Appropriate imaging is essential in delineating fracture morphology and should at the very least include anteroposterior, anteroposterior oblique (Grashey) and axillary

Voluntary winging of the scapula: Proposed diagnostic criteria.

We report a series of 10 patients with unilateral, dynamic, winged scapula (WS), without cause, that was diagnosed as voluntary winging of the scapula (VWS). We compared clinical, electrodiagnostic, and other examination data for 10 patients with VWS and 146 with dynamic WS-related neuromuscular disorders, to establish a detailed pattern of the VWS subtype. In VWS, electrodiagnostic and other examinations did not reveal any neuromuscular or orthopedic cause. Winging was dynamic, obvious, neither medial nor lateral, and mainly involved the inferior angle of the scapula, in young patients. VWS n

Acute traumatic quadrilateral space syndrome following scapula fracture.

The acute tunnel syndrome of the quadrilateral space of Velpeau is a very rare entity in which the axillary nerve and the posterior humeral circumflex artery experience brutal compression in shoulder injuries. We report the case of a burst fracture of the right scapula with great displacement of the lateral border occasioning a total isolated paralysis of the right axillary nerve by axillary nerve compression. The lateral scapula border fracture was reduced and stabilized with neurolysis of the axillary nerve through a posterior approach. The recovery of the axillary nerve occurred in ten week

Winging of scapula due to serratus anterior tear.

Winging of scapula occurs most commonly due to injury to long thoracic nerve supplying serratus anterior muscle. Traumatic injury to serratus anterior muscle itself is very rare. We reported a case of traumatic winging of scapula due to tear of serratus anterior muscle in a 19-year-old male. Winging was present in neutral position and in extension of right shoulder joint but not on "push on wall" test. Patient was managed conservatively and achieved satisfactory result.

Maxillary reconstruction using a bipedicled osteocutaneous scapula flap.

When managing extensive maxillary defects it is difficult to provide a stable biomechanical frame for prostheses, and obturators are difficult to use. This study reviews cases involving angular branch artery pedicled scapular bone flaps (SBF) combined with or without latissimus dorsi musculocutaneous flap (LDMF). Between 2004 and 2007, four wide maxillary defects were repaired using the angular vascularized branch of the scapular bone. Tumor resection with immediate reconstruction using combined LDMF and angular artery pedicled SBF was used in 3 cases and angular artery pedicled SBF alone in 1
