Accuracy of artificial intelligence software for the detection of confirmed pleural effusion in thoracic radiographs in dogs.

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms in diagnostic radiology is a developing area in veterinary medicine and may provide substantial benefit in many clinical settings. These range from timely image interpretation in the emergency setting when no boarded radiologist is available to allowing boarded radiologists to focus on more challenging cases that require complex medical decision making. Testing the performance of artificial intelligence (AI) software in veterinary medicine is at its early stages, and only a scant number of reports of validation of AI software have been publish

Ethno-veterinary control of bovine dermatophilosis and ticks in Zhombe, Njelele and Shamrock resettlement in Zimbabwe.

A structured questionnaire survey was conducted to determine the ethno-veterinary practices and other control methods used by smallholder farmers for the management of bovine dermatophilosis and ticks. A total of 153 farmers were interviewed from Njelele, Zhombe communal and Shamrock resettlement areas. Crop production contributed most to livelihoods (83.2 %) while livestock contributed 9.0 %. Over 90 % of the respondents had attended school up to primary level, with 11.4 % undergoing animal health and husbandry training. Treatment of livestock diseases was practised by 96 % of the farmers, an

"It Does Tend to Be a Sort of One-Size-Fits-All Approach": Perceptions and Experiences of Staff Teaching Neurodivergent Students in Veterinary Clinical Learning Environments.

Clinical learning environments (CLEs) are integral in veterinary education, providing short placements of hands-on learning in clinical practices at veterinary schools or external practices. Staff must facilitate neurodivergent (ND) students' reasonable adjustments, while balancing teaching and other competing interests, while university-designed support plans are based on the traditional academic environment. CLEs are usually commercial businesses where students are taught by academic and non-academic clinical staff, the latter often having limited educational training. Understanding CLE staf

One Health-One Education: Medical and Veterinary Inter-Professional Training.

Physicians and veterinarians are increasingly expected to collaborate across disciplines; however, in most cases their education and training remain isolated within their respective professions. Medical and veterinary students are rarely provided with opportunities for inter-professional learning during their coursework and clinical training. One Health serves as an ideal framework for developing problem-focused curricula that promote inter-professional teamwork. One Health issues (e.g., zoonotic diseases, water pollution, toxic waste, impact of climate change, and food safety and security) no

Public Health Knowledge, Preparedness, and Professional Identity Among Veterinary Students: A Multi-Institutional Survey of AVMA-Accredited Programs.

Veterinarians work at the intersection of animal, human, and environmental health, yet integration of public health and One Health competencies across veterinary curricula remains poorly characterized. An anonymous, cross-sectional online survey of DVM/VMD students enrolled in AVMA COE-accredited or provisionally accredited veterinary schools worldwide evaluated knowledge, perceived training adequacy, confidence, professional identity, and career intentions related to public health and One Health. The 32-item instrument was analyzed using descriptive statistics and inductive thematic analysis.

Determinants of Work-Related Risks among Veterinary Clinical Students in South West Nigeria.

Veterinary practices or activities expose professionals, including students, to hazards associated with animal contact. To describe workplace health and safety status and risk factors associated with hazards among veterinary clinical students in South West Nigeria, a cross-sectional survey was conducted using a semistructured questionnaire. Data on demographics, health and safety (HS) status, work-related hazards, healthcare facilities, and immunisation history were obtained. Of 167 students recruited, 100 (60.2%) were males, and >77.1% fell within the age group of 21-25 years. Many participan

One Health in Medical Education: A Proposed Framework.

The One Health concept focuses on the interconnections between human health, animal health, and the environment, stressing the need for interdisciplinary collaborations to address complex issues such as the health challenges posed by climate change and global pandemics. One Health is a central part of the curriculum of veterinary schools, however, it is rarely incorporated into medical school education. Nationally, there are limited examples of formal One Health education and training for medical students. To incorporate One Health into its curriculum, John A. Burns School of Medicine develope

Public health campaign to promote hand hygiene before meals in a college of veterinary medicine.

Veterinary students can be exposed to environmental infectious agents in school that may include zoonotic pathogens. Encouraging effective hand hygiene can minimize the spread of zoonoses and promote public health and the One Health concept among veterinary students. The purpose of this study was to determine if a campaign could improve hand hygiene among veterinary students at extracurricular meetings serving meals. Nine Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine (KSU-CVM) extracurricular organizations participated in the study, sanitizer was provided at each meeting, and baseline

Hepatozoon canis and Babesia vogeli infections of dogs in Tunisia.

A paucity of studies is available on haemoparasites in dogs in Tunisia. In this study, we used molecular techniques (PCR/sequencing) to detect and characterize haemoprotozoa in sick dogs from Tunisia. A total of 99 dogs displaying such clinical symptoms as fever, anorexia, and depression were presented for treatment to the hospital of the Veterinary School of Sidi Thabet (Tunisia). Among dogs screened by PCR, five (5%) proved to be infected with a hemoprotozoa species. An analysis of all the sequences that were obtained enabled us to identify two species of Protozoa: Babesia vogeli (in three d

Colopexy as a treatment for rectal prolapse in dogs and cats: a retrospective study of 14 cases.

Colopexy was evaluated as a treatment for recurrent rectal prolapse in eight dogs and six cats. Cases included in the study were from two institutions; the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine and the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine. Two different colopexy techniques were used: A simple suture technique was used in two cats and four dogs (University of Pennsylvania), and an incisional technique was used in four cats and four dogs (University of Tennessee). Rectal prolapse had not recurred in any of the 14 animals at the time of follow-up. Incisional d

An outbreak of cryptosporidiosis among veterinary science students who work with calves.

The authors describe an outbreak of cryptosporidiosis among students working with calves as part of their veterinary science technology program. After an off-campus provider identified an index case, school authorities requested cryptosporidium (crypto) as part of the stool ova and parasite examination of all students presenting to the college health center with significant gastroenteritis. Thirteen students submitted stool specimens that were examined for crypto; 7 were positive, and all were from veterinary science students. One of the calves used in the program also tested positive for cryp

Outcomes Assessment in Professional Programs: Audit of Competency Assessment and the Impact of Reasonable Adjustments on Veterinary Medicine Students' Attainment at the University of Glasgow.

Recent analysis of UK higher education found a 90% increase in students with disabilities. These students are eligible to receive reasonable adjustments (RAs) during examinations. However, research on the impact of RAs on veterinary Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs) remains limited. This highlights the necessity to assess current practices of RAs in veterinary education to ensure examinations are equitable and accessible. This audit evaluated RAs in OSCEs at the University of Glasgow Veterinary School from 2018 to 2024. It analyzed the performance of students with RAs compared

Personality and Success in a First-Year Veterinary Gross Anatomy Course.

Researchers are increasingly paying attention to non-cognitive ways to determine a student's ability to succeed in graduate studies. This study investigated associations between the Big Five personality domain scores and academic performance in Gross Anatomy I (GA1) at Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine. Within the first 2 weeks of the semester, a researcher-developed survey instrument was used for psychological assessment of the Big Five personality domains. Survey domain scores were compared with students' final GA1 course grades. Conscientiousness was positively associated with f

Surgical Management of a Salter-Harris Type I Distal Physeal Fracture of the Tibia in a Calf: A Case Report.

Fractures are common conditions in cattle, including tibial fractures. Physeal tibial fractures are more specific and less frequently met in field conditions. A calf with a Salter-Harris type I distal physeal fracture of the tibia was referred to the National Veterinary School of Toulouse (ENVT), France. Although the use of external fixators in the treatment of tibial fractures is common, distal physeal tibial fractures require a different and specific technique involving them. They were first used as a lever arm to reduce the fracture due to the severe displacement. A hock joint bypass was th
