BACKGROUND: While accumulating research has tested the hypothesis that screen time causes psychiatric symptoms in children, less attention has been paid to the hypothesis that children with psychiatric symptoms change their patterns of screen time and digital media use. We aimed to test whether children with psychiatric symptoms subsequently change their patterns of screen time and digital media use.
METHODS: N = 9,066 children primarily aged 9-10 in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study at baseline and 1-year later. Psychiatric symptoms included internalizing, attention, and exter

BACKGROUND: Myopia, the most common refractive error, is a global public health problem with substantial visual impairment if left untreated. Several studies have investigated the association between increased near-work and restricted outdoor activities in children with myopia; however, such studies in children without myopia are scarce. We aimed to monitor the effect of the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) home confinement and mandatory virtual learning on myopic progression among myopic and non-myopic school-aged children.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective chart review of children ag

Night-time screen-viewing (SV) contributes to inadequate sleep and poor diet, and subsequently excess weight. Adolescents may use many devices at night, which can provide additional night-time SV. Purpose: To identify night-time SV patterns, and describe differences in diet, sleep, weight status, and adiposity between patterns in a cross-sectional and longitudinal manner. Methods: Adolescents (10-16 y) reported devices they viewed at night and completed food recalls. Accelerometry, anthropometrics, and imaging were conducted to measure sleep, weight status, and adiposity, respectively. Latent

BACKGROUND: Cross-sectional studies have demonstrated associations between screen time and disruptive behavior disorders (conduct disorder and oppositional defiant disorder); however, prospective associations remain unknown. This study's objective was to determine the prospective associations of contemporary screen time modalities with conduct and oppositional defiant disorder in a national cohort of 9-11-year-old children.
METHODS: We analyzed data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study (N = 11,875). Modified Poisson regression analyses were conducted to estimate the as

In a technology-driven society, adolescents are particularly vulnerable to the effects of excessive screen time, and gender disparities are notable. However, evidence on the gender difference in excessive screen time among Chinese high school students is scarce. This study examined gender differences in excessive screen time and its impact on mental health and urinary incontinence among 15,055 high school-aged adolescents, including 7514 (49.9%) males and 7541 (50.1%) females with the mean age of 16.72 (SD 0.88) in Henan Province, China. A stratified two-stage cluster sampling design was appli

Very few early childhood interventions have observed sustained effects regarding television viewing and none have examined the mechanisms behind sustained intervention effects at long-term follow-ups. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate potential mechanisms relating to the maintained intervention effect on television viewing at two long-term follow-ups in the Melbourne Infant Feeding Activity and Nutrition Trial (INFANT). INFANT was a cluster-randomised controlled trial. At the 2- and 3.5-year follow-ups, a total of 262 infant/mother pairs had complete information. Television viewin

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Screen time among youth has been increasingly recognized as a public health problem because of its link with obesity. This has been demonstrated in many studies conducted in developed countries but few studies have addressed the problem in developing countries, despite an increase literature about the emergence of obesity and a greater access to screen devices in a country like Vietnam. Our study aimed at assessing screen time and its relationship with BMI in adolescents of Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC), Vietnam.
METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN: In a cross-sectional study of 202

OBJECTIVES: Although previous studies suggest that valproate (VPA) may induce reproductive endocrine disorders, the effects of newer antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) on reproductive endocrine health have not been widely investigated and compared with those of older AEDs. Therefore, this multicenter cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of reproductive endocrine dysfunctions in pubertal females with epilepsy receiving VPA, lamotrigine (LTG), or levetiracetam (LEV) monotherapy.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Pubertal girls on VPA (n = 11), LTG (n = 8), or LEV (n = 13) monotherapy for at least

OBJECTIVE: There is a lack of breast radiologists in Norway and in Europe. Artificial intelligence (AI) offers an alternative to solely human readers and has demonstrated promising results in cancer detection in mammographic screening. We aimed to estimate the potential reduction in radiologists' workload by replacing one of the two radiologists with AI in screen-reading mammograms in BreastScreen Norway.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: BreastScreen Norway targets about 680,000 women aged 50-69 who are invited biennially. The participation rates for each screening round are about 75%. All the screenin

BACKGROUND: Depression and anxiety symptoms among adolescents have increased in recent years, making the identification of modifiable risk factors important. Prolonged screen time (ST) and later chronotype may be independently and jointly associated with adolescent mental health. This study aimed to examine the independent and joint associations of ST and chronotype with depression and anxiety symptoms among adolescents.
METHODS: Data were drawn from the China Adolescent Health Screening Program (CAHSP), a large school-based health screening program conducted in Shenzhen, southern China, usin

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is a crucial life stage for the individual identity formation. The growing employment of social media and screen-exposure among teenagers and the concerning rise in suicide ideation rates in this susceptible group both suggested this study. Thus, we explored the association between adolescents' suicidal ideation and their daily social media screen-exposure.
METHODS: We surveyed 502 students, aged 13 to 19 years old, recruited in colleges and universities of Punjab, Pakistan. The survey was based on a 28-item self-reported questionnaire and demographic data collection.

This study identifies an association between increased recreational screen time and vitamin D deficiency among children and adolescents. Children and adolescents engaging in five or more hours of daily screen time exhibited more than double the risk of vitamin D deficiency compared to those with lower screen exposure. These findings underscore the importance of clinicians assessing screen habits in pediatric patients, as excessive screen time may reduce outdoor activity and sunlight exposure, leading to health risks. Monitoring and managing screen time, alongside considering vitamin D suppleme
