Amoeba-like infections in cultured marine fishes: systemic infection in pompano Trachinotus falcatus L. from Singapore and gill disease associated with Paramoeba sp. in sea bream Sparus aurata L. from Greece.

Two cases of Amoeba-like infections in cultured warmwater marine fish are described, an unusual systemic infection in pompano Trachinotus falcatus L. from Singapore and a gill infection in Mediterranean sea bream Sparus aurata L. All pompano showed marked systemic infection of Amoeba-like parasites in gills, kidney, intestine, pancreas and spleen. The most severe lesions were in the gills and renal tissue with minimal tissue reaction in other organs.

Metabolomic and Lipidomic Tools for Tracing Fish Escapes from Aquaculture Facilities.

During adverse atmospheric events, enormous damage can occur at marine aquaculture facilities, as was the case during Storm Gloria in the southeastern Spanish Mediterranean in January 2020, with massive fish escapes. Fishes that escape were caught by professional fishermen. The objective of this study was to identify biomarkers in fish that enable differentiation among wild fish, escaped farm-raised fish, and farm-raised fish kept in aquaculture facilities until their slaughter. We focused on gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata). We used nuclear magnetic resonance to search for possible biomarke

Transthyretin in fish: state of the art.

Relatively little is known about thyroid hormone-binding proteins in fish and, until recently, the thyroid hormones (THs), thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), had only been found in fish plasma bound to albumin and lipoproteins. Recently, transthyretin (TTR) was cloned in a teleost fish, the sea bream (sb); it is composed of 130 amino acids and shares 47-54% sequence similarity with other vertebrate TTR and binds preferentially T3. Homology modelling of sbTTR based upon the crystallographic structure of TTR in human, rat and chicken reveals similar monomer-monomer and dimer-dimer interfa

Antibiotic resistance of Vibrio species isolated from Sparus aurata reared in Italian mariculture.

Extensive use of antimicrobial agents in finfish farming and the consequent selective pressure lead to the acquisition of antibiotic resistance in aquaculture environment bacteria. Vibrio genus represents one of the main pathogens affecting gilthead sea bream. The development of antibiotic resistance by Vibrio represents a potential threat to human health by exchange of resistant genes to human pathogens through food chain. The objective of the present study was to conduct a multisite survey on the antibiotic resistance of Vibrio spp. isolated from gilthead sea bream reared in Italian maricult

Experimental transmission of Enteromyxum leei to freshwater fish.

The myxosporean Enteromyxum leei is known to infect a wide range of marine fish hosts. The objective of the present study was to determine whether freshwater fish species are also receptive hosts to this parasite. Seventeen species of freshwater fish were experimentally fed E. leei-infected gut tissue from donor gilthead sea bream Sparus aurata obtained from a commercial sea bream cage farm. Four of the tested species, tiger barb Puntius tetrazona, zebra danio Danio rerio, oscar Astronotus ocellatus and Mozambique tilapia Oreochromis mossambicus, were found to be susceptible with prevalences r

Cryptosporidium molnari n. sp. (Apicomplexa: Cryptosporidiidae) infecting two marine fish species, Sparus aurata L. and Dicentrarchus labrax L.

Cryptosporidium molnari n. sp. is described from two teleost fish, the gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata L.) and the European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.). The parasite was found mainly in the stomach epithelium and seldom in the intestine. Oocysts were almost spherical, with four naked sporozoites and a prominent residuum, and measured 3.23-5.45 x 3.02-5.04 (mean 4.72 x 4.47) microm in the type host, gilthead sea bream (shape index 1-1.17, mean 1.05). Sporulation was endogenous, as fully sporulated oocysts were found within the fish, both in the stomach epithelium and lumen, and in faec

The first report of cathepsin A gene in a teleost (rock bream, Oplegnathus fasciatus): An investigation of immune functions upon infection with several pathogens.

We isolated and characterised a cDNA encoding the lysosomal protective protein (serine protease) cathepsin A (CTSA) from rock bream (Oplegnathus fasciatus). The full-length rock bream CTSA (RbCTSA) cDNA (1814 bp) contains an open reading frame of 1419 bp that encodes 472 amino acids. Alignment of multiple CTSA protein sequences revealed that the active site serine and histidine residues were well-conserved among the other CTSA sequences. RbCTSA is highly expressed in the peripheral blood leukocytes, kidney, spleen, liver, intestine, gill, heart, brain, stomach, and eye. RbCTSA expression was a

Morphological characterization of the oral cavity of the gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) with emphasis on the teeth-age adaptation.

Gilthead sea bream with different age groups that collected from Seawater fisheries, Ismailia Governorate, Egypt, were examined by gross anatomy and scanning electron microscopy to assess the morphological characteristics of the oral cavity. Teeth patterns showed that the gilthead sea bream is adapted to the feeding pattern according to age development, as it modified from spiny form teeth in young fishes to obelisk-like teeth and flat dome-like teeth in growing fishes, with differentiation of teeth into three pairs of canine and conical teeth, that later differentiated to small and large flat

Molecular identification and expression analysis of cathepsins O and S from rock bream, Oplegnathus fasciatus.

Cathepsins are lysosomal cysteine proteases belonging to the papain family, members of which play important roles in normal metabolism for maintenance of cellular homeostasis. Rock bream (Oplegnathus fasciatus) cathepsin O and S (RbCTSO and RbCTSS, respectively) cDNAs were identified by expressed sequence tag (EST) analysis of a lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated rock bream liver cDNA library. The full-length RbCTSO cDNA (1698 bp) contained an open reading frame (ORF) of 1017 bp encoding 338 amino acids. The full-length RbCTSS cDNA was 1401 bp in length and contained an ORF of 1014 bp encodin

The effect of low frequency noise on the behaviour of juvenile Sparus aurata.

Anthropogenic activities are causing increased noise levels in the marine environment. To date, few studies have been undertaken to investigate the effects of different noise frequencies on the behaviour of juvenile fish. In this study, the behavioural changes of juvenile gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) are evaluated when exposed to white noise filtered in third-octave bands centred at 63, 125, 500, and 1000 Hz (sound pressure level, 140-150 dB re 1 μΡa) for 7 h. The group dispersion, motility, and swimming height of the fish were analysed before and during the acoustic emission. Dispersion

Wild fish use visual cues to recognize individual divers.

Many animal species have been shown to discriminate between individual humans in captive settings and may use a variety of cues to do so. Empirical evidence remains scarce for animals in the wild, however, particularly in aquatic contexts. For the first time, we investigated discrimination of individual humans by fish in the wild. We first trained two species of fish, saddled sea bream Oblada melanura and black sea bream Spondyliosoma cantharus, to follow a human diver to obtain a food reward. We then investigated whether they could discriminate between two human divers and follow the correct

Prevalence and molecular identification of zoonotic Anisakis and Pseudoterranova species in fish destined to human consumption in Chile.

Zoonotic larvae of the family Anisakidae found in several fish species represent a serious risk in public health since they may cause food-borne anisakidosis in humans. Chile has culinary preferences including eating raw fish in many traditional preparations. In the present study, a total of 180 fish specimens representing three different fish species, i.e., Chilean hake (Merluccius gayi), snoek (Thyrsites atun), and sea bream (Brama australis), were caught at central coast of Chile. Parasitological examination was performed on musculature and abdominal cavity for subsequent extraction and qua

Gilthead seabream mucus glycosylation is complex, differs between epithelial sites and carries unusual poly N-acetylhexosamine motifs.

Gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) is a marine finfish of economic importance in aquaculture. Despite its adaptability to varying culture conditions, gilthead seabream culture can be affected by viral, bacterial or parasitic diseases. The main route of entry of pathogens is through mucosal surfaces. Teleost external and internal surfaces are covered by mucus, mainly comprised of highly glycosylated proteins called mucins. The mucin glycans regulate pathogen growth, adhesion, virulence and inter and intra species communication. Here, we characterized the gilthead seabream mucus glycosylation, co
