Water circulation and impact on water quality in the southwest of Efate Island, Vanuatu.

In Small Island Developing States (SIDS), water pollution is not monitored or assessed frequently enough to fully understand the processes, impacts of water quality issues and what solutions are available This study investigated flushing time in Erakor lagoon and Port Vila Bay, Vanuatu using a numerical model developed in Delft3D. Microbial contamination by Escherichia coli was detected in multiple locations in the lagoon system with counts exceeding thresholds related to human health concerns. Modelling demonstrated a poor flushing time overall with a further decrease as the influence of wave

Understanding the health impacts of the climate crisis.

The climate crisis is the greatest threat to global health. Anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions have increased the temperature of the Earth by over 1.5 °C and caused sea levels to rise by over 24 cm since the beginning of the 20th century. 2024 was the warmest year on record and the last 10 hottest years have all occurred in the last 10 years. Climate models suggest that global surface temperature could rise between 1.5 °C and 5.5 °C compared with the pre-industrial period by 2100, and sea-level rise could be between 0.5 m and 1.3 m. Climate change is already causing significant shifts in w

Muscle energetics and ultrastructure in chronic hypoxia.

High-altitude exposure impairs both maximal aerobic and anaerobic (lactic and alactic) performances. The maximal aerobic power (VO2max) decreases exponentially with increasing altitude. At 5,350 m, a sudden rise in inspired O2 pressure (PIO2) was found to raise the VO2max of acclimatized lowlanders from 70 to only 92% of the control sea-level value. Since the hemoglobin concentration was about 35% higher than that of the controls, hemoglobin O2 saturation was restored to about 100%, and maximal cardiac output was only 10-20% lower than at sea level, the above result can only be the consequence

Application of deep learning models to detect coastlines and shorelines.

Identifying and monitoring coastlines and shorelines play an important role in coastal erosion assessment around the world. The application of deep learning models was used in this study to detect coastlines and shorelines in Vietnam using high-resolution satellite images and different object segmentation methods. The aims are to (1) propose indicators to identify coastlines and shorelines; (2) build deep learning (DL) models to automatically interpret coastlines and shorelines from high-resolution remote sensing images; and (3) apply DL-trained models to monitor coastal erosion in Vietnam. Aging in Flood-Prone Coastal Areas: Discerning the Health and Well-Being Risk for Older Residents.

Coastal communities are increasingly exposed to more intense and frequent hurricanes, accelerated sea-level rise, and prolonged tidal inundation, yet they are often a preferred retirement destination for older adults vulnerable to flooding and extreme weather events. The unique physical and psychosocial challenges of older population age 65 and over may affect their level of preparedness, capacity to cope with, and ability to respond and recover from a hazard event. Despite the clear vulnerabilities of older residents living in high-risk areas when compared to younger coastal populations, ther

Mere Nuisance or Growing Threat? The Physical and Economic Impact of High Tide Flooding on US Road Networks.

High tide flooding (HTF) already affects traffic in many US coastal areas, but the issue will worsen significantly in the future. While studies show that large storm surge events threaten to be ever more costly, less damaging, but more frequent HTF events remain understudied and potentially carry a comparable economic impact. This study advances our understanding of the risks and impacts of HTF on vulnerable traffic corridors using hourly tide gauge water levels, sea-level rise projections, and link-level spatial analysis. It is the first study to estimate HTF economic impacts for varying leve

Classification of monthly tidal envelopes in mixed tide regimes.

Coastal inundation is increasing globally. Changes in tidal water levels contribute to flood risk alongside rain and sea storm events. Unlike the latter, temporal variations in tides may be predicted and their patterns analyzed many years in advance. This paper explains two novel methods for characterizing monthly scale patterns in tidal water level variation: one simple qualitative method with restricted applicability; and another more complex quantitative method with global applicability to areas characterized by mixed, mainly semidiurnal and mixed, mainly diurnal tide regimes (~ 65% of glob

"The Baltic Sea Germ": A Case Report of Necrotizing Fasciitis following Vibrio vulnificus Infection.

Reported is an 80-year-old patient with septic shock from necrotizing fasciitis secondary to a Vibrio vulnificus (Vv) infection. The patient reports having been swimming in the Baltic Sea after a minor trauma to the left leg. Emergency superficial necrosectomy followed by intensive medical therapy was performed. Antibiotic therapy was initiated with a third-generation cephalosporin and a tetracycline. Vv was detected in the intraoperative microbiological smears. Instead of a leg amputation and a flap, due to the patient's age, a split skin covering to consolidate the wound was performed. Vv is

Plutonium mobilization from contaminated estuarine sediments, Esk Estuary (UK).

Since 1952, liquid radioactive effluent containing238-242Pu, 241Am, 237Np, 137Cs, and 99Tc has been released with authorization from the Sellafield nuclear complex (UK) into the Irish Sea. This represents the largest source of plutonium (Pu) discharged in all western Europe, with 276 kg having been released. In the Eastern Irish Sea, the majority of the transuranic activity has settled into an area of sediments (Mudpatch) located off the Cumbrian coast. Radionuclides from the Mudpatch have been re-dispersed via particulate transport in fine-grained estuarine and intertidal sediments to the Nor

The Refugial Squeeze: A Globally Relevant Mechanism of Species Decline Revealed by a Threatened Amphibian.

A key outcome of the Global Biodiversity Crisis is the contraction and range shift of species distribution into refugial habitats that afford protection against threatening processes. Range contractions driven by spatially overlapping threats may fragment populations to the point where functional habitat is lost. This study identifies a range contraction of the Vulnerable green and golden bell frog (Ranoidea aurea) in south-east Australia using a multi-method approach. We fitted alpha hulls, species distribution models (MaxEnt, Random Forest, Boosted Regression Trees and an AUC-weighted ensemb

The influence of climate change on waterborne disease and Legionella: a review.

Climate change is predicted to have a major impact on people's lives with the recent extreme weather events and varying abnormal temperature profiles across the world raising concerns. The impacts of global warming are already being observed, from rising sea levels and melting snow and ice to changing weather patterns. Scientists state unequivocally that these trends cannot be explained by natural variability in climate alone. Human activities, especially the burning of fossil fuels, have warmed the earth by dramatically increasing concentrations of heat-trapping gases in the atmosphere; as th

Atmospheric blocking slows ocean-driven melting of Greenland's largest glacier tongue.

Mass loss from the Greenland ice sheet has contributed to global sea-level rise over the past 20 years. Yet direct observations from the 79 North Glacier (79NG) calving front reveal decreasing Atlantic Intermediate Water (AIW) temperatures below the ice tongue from 2018 to 2021, leading to reduced ocean heat transport. This is linked to a concurrent decrease in basal melt and thinning rates at the grounding line. The origin of this AIW cooling is traced to a slowdown of the large-scale ocean circulation in the Nordic Seas, driven by European atmospheric blocking that strengthens cold air advec

Early post-treatment immunoglobulin profile in human schistosomiasis.

In a trial at determining the most relevant immunoglobulin isotype that could reflect success of praziquantel treatment, an ELISA using soluble egg antigen (SEA) was applied on sera of Egyptian patients suffering from active intestinal schistosemiasis without hepatic complications, determining the levels of IgE, IgA, IgM, IgG1, IgG2, IgG3 and IgG4 raised against the SEA, both, pre- and early post-treatment. The positive results obtained to all anti-SEA immunoglobulin isotypes before treatment support the usefulness of this technique in the diagnosis of schistosomiasis. Except for IgG3 subclass

Epidemiology of Salmonid Rickettsial Septicemia (SRS) in Farmed Salmon: The Role of Sea Lice Infestations in Mortality Risk.

Piscirickettsia salmonis, the causal agent of salmonid rickettsial septicemia (SRS), is the main pathogen affecting farmed salmonids in Chile. Outbreaks of SRS lead to substantial economic losses for producers. Many determinants related to SRS outcomes are still poorly understood. Here, we conducted a retrospective cohort study from 2014 to 2021 to investigate the epidemiology of SRS at the farm level in southern Chile, employing historical monitoring data. Using time series analysis of weekly SRS mortality risk and sea lice (Caligus rogercresseyi ) infestation levels, we found that SRS mortal

Assessment of coastal exposure of climate-driven oceanic hazards along the East Coast of India using geospatial techniques.

Coastal regions face increasing threats from a range of natural and anthropogenic hazards, such as sea level rise, storm surges, coastal erosion and flooding. These hazards are intensified by climate change and rapid coastal development, placing both human populations and ecosystems at significant risk. Vulnerability to coastal hazards is influenced by geographic, socio-economic and infrastructural factors, with densely inhabited areas in low elevation being particularly susceptible. In this regard, the coastal zones are exposed to composite ocean hazards, including extreme water levels, sea l

Morphodynamics of a composite sand-cobble beach in response to extratropical cyclone Fiona and seasonal wave variability.

Climate change is driving higher coastal water levels, and models project accelerated future sea-level rise and coastal storm intensification. These dynamics paired with anthropogenic coastal alterations will drive drastic coastal change worldwide. Composite beaches with mixed sediment sizes warrant detailed study as these exhibit complex morphodynamics in response to changing hydrodynamics due to the distinct transport thresholds of different sediment types. This study uses a novel multi-method approach to investigate a composite sand-cobble beach in Atlantic Canada experiencing a shortening

Wind and rain compound with tides to cause frequent and unexpected coastal floods.

With sea-level rise, flooding in coastal communities is now common during the highest high tides. Floods also occur at normal tidal levels when rainfall overcomes stormwater infrastructure that is partially submerged by tides. Data describing this type of compound flooding is scarce and, therefore, it is unclear how often these floods occur and the extent to which non-tidal factors contribute to flooding. We combine measurements of flooding on roads and within storm drains with a numerical model to examine processes that contribute to flooding in Carolina Beach, NC, USA - a community that chro

Impacts of repeated coastal flooding on soil and groundwater following managed dike realignment.

Coastal defense structures (e.g., dikes, seawalls) protect vulnerable communities along marine coastlines and estuaries from the physical and chemical influences of adjacent water bodies. These structures are susceptible to overtopping or breaching by tides and waves, with risks amplified by climate change-induced sea-level rise. Repeated inundation by saline water can contaminate freshwater resources and salinize soil, impacting land-use activities, including agricultural productivity. Managed ecosystem-based dike realignment and salt marsh restoration can provide alternatives to traditional

Upward Shift and Steepening of the Blood Pressure Response to Exercise in Hypertensive Subjects at High Altitude.

BACKGROUND: Acute exposure to high-altitude hypobaric hypoxia induces a blood pressure rise in hypertensive humans, both at rest and during exercise. It is unclear whether this phenomenon reflects specific blood pressure hyperreactivity or rather an upward shift of blood pressure levels. We aimed at evaluating the extent and rate of blood pressure rise during exercise in hypertensive subjects acutely exposed to high altitude, and how these alterations can be counterbalanced by antihypertensive treatment. METHODS AND RESULTS: Fifty-five subjects with mild hypertension, double-blindly randomize

Climate-driven flooding widens economic inequalities across EU regions.

With growing consensus on the scale of climate change and its direct impacts on societies and economies, the debate on how direct climate damages cascade through interconnected economic systems eventually leading to profound indirect effects remains open amid limited quantitative evidence. The localised nature of climate risk means that regional economies may face stark differences in how they are impacted by the direct and indirect physical risks. In Europe, the world's fastest warming continent, concentrated local damages spill over asymmetrically into tightly-interconnected regional markets
