Leptospirosis in pinnipeds is nearly exclusively reported in California sea lions (Zalophus californianus), in which the disease is believed to be endemic. Grey seal (Halichoerus grypus) entrapment in fishing gear is well documented, consisting of two forms: peracute underwater entrapment and chronic entanglement. BACKGROUND: The beta-lactamase enzyme OXA-48 has spread widely in recent years in Enterobacteriaceae associated with man, disseminated primarily on incompatibility group L/M plasmids. Northern elephant seals (Mirounga angustirostris) are massive, land-breeding marine mammals that produce loud, stereotyped calls during annual breeding seasons.
